I heard that Deidara's gender was never really revealed in canon, therefore fanfic writers can make Dei whichever gender is convenient for them?

That said, Yashamaru's gender was never explicitly stated either (at least in the anime), we never saw anyone refer to Yashamaru as either a he or she, and I assumed Yashamaru was a she because it looked like a she, but most people in fanon seem to think it's a he on the grounds that the name ends in "-maru", therefore it's a boy's name. And so, Yashamaru, and possibly Deidara, apparently fall into the third gender category, the Like Haku category.

Uh. Nope. XD Yashamaru was Gaara's mother's brother. It's a bad fan translation to make him a woman. (wtf kishimoto, fraternal twins don't look that identical) and yeah, that's official.

Also, Deidara is a male name. So it talks like a man, and acts like a man and has a man's name, it has no boobs (very clear shot of that in chapter 280), and it's not even that girl-pretty -- i'm gonna keep on assuming that it's indeed male, I think. Especially since most people's major argument seems to be "well, she's got a PONYTAIL." uh. yeah. so do shika and iruka. Not convinced.

Besides, as several of my friends said, if it looks like a girl and you can't tell for sure, assume it's a guy. Because Kishimoto is previsible like that. XD

The fan subtitling didn't say Yashamaru was a woman. It didn't state his gender at all, because we never saw anyone talking about Yashamaru in the third person, only saw Gaara remembering Yashamaru, no conversations about Yashamaru, therefore no he or she was ever used.

And Itachi. He also has a ponytail :) When I first saw Itachi in the anime I thought his resemblance to Sasuke was too close- I didn't think brothers should look that similar- but over time I sort of changed my mind. Now, they don't look the same at all to me. Similar, yes, but not excessively so, because my brain put emphasis on the differences so I notice those over the similarities now. Isn't the brain a wonderful thing?

Allow me to remind you, though, you said yourself in the thread about Quatre's nationality that if it is not explicitly stated in canon, the fanfic author is free to decide for herself. Everyone has her own interpretation of canon, and none is inherently better or worse than any other.

The databooks, I think, say that Yashamaru is a man. It's second level canon, true, but still official.

I don't mind if people go "alright, I know there's a probability that A is actually male, but for the purposes of my story, I have decided to make them female." After all, it's only likely in canon, not blatantly explicit, and people might not have access to the databooks, or didn't/couldn't find anything online.

When they go all "OMG I TELL YOU SHES GOT TO BE A WOMAN DAMN IT, COZ I KNOW ITS TRUE" then I reserve the right to laugh. There's a difference between liking a more or less likely explanation better, and refusing to admit that the doubt even EXISTS.

I don't think Itachi and Sasuke look too much like each other now, even without the lines. Itachi's face is longer, less triangular, and his eyes are a lot narrower. His expressions are very different. Also in the manga at least he has more bangs XD Of course, post-timeskip Sasuke might have grown into the same kind of jaws/chin, and only looked cuter/girlier because he was a kid. XD (damn it i want to see him noooow)

Yeah, people who insist that their interpretation of canon is correct like that are stupid and/or immature.

However, it should be noted that as the dub version gets farther along, we should expect to see more people insisting things that seem dumb to us because they might have been changed in the dub. Like, I heard the dubbers made Haku a girl. Meaning, they'll probably make Yashamaru and Deidara girls too. Not that I really blame them, seeing as most American teenagers wouldn't understand (It looks like a girl, it acts like a girl, it sounds like a girl and they're saying it's a boy? WTF!? Is what they'd think- When I was watching my fansubs and Kakashi said Haku was a boy it sure gave me quite a turn)
It's going to cause some misunderstanding, with the English language fandom going from four different versions of canon (the scanlated manga, the fansubbed anime, the Viz translated comic, and the dubbed anime).

It's the ones that cling to their delusions even after they've been told again and again that no, actually it wasn't like that in the original version that I don't feel bad about mocking. XD I could accept the "well this is what I saw, so this is what i'll use" excuse, too, but the "omg no you're WRONG" attitude... Same thing as the first.

The dub respected the Haku = boy thing. Everyone was afraid they'd make Haku a girl, which is the origin of that rumor, but they *gasp* respected the original and didn't. I've seen these eps. He's called a boy several times, and even gets to tell naruto about it.

... yeah, what the hell, an american dubbing company respecting the right of a character to be sexually ambiguous, where is the world going? XD

All of those wacky theories about Itachi not being evil? It's just people who haven't yet reached the maturity level necessary to see beyond physical appearance. Itachi is beautiful! He can't be evil! Therefore, he must have had a good reason! Fugaku must have been evil, because Fugaku is kinda fugly! *shakes head* yeah, of course we can see that Itachi is a sociopath, but don't blame the blind. They'll grow out of it eventually.
