FF7/His Dark Materials -- bloated drabble (167 words)
Same 'verse as Meet Again (Tifa) and Church Encounter (Aeris). Short, Cloud POV on Vincent. It hit me over the head and as a result it's likely confusing as fuck. Some of it is deliberate, because I'm an evil tease, but some of it might just be writy fail. I can't tell. x__x;
Skally: Cloud's daemon, a cuahl (big hunting cat); Breon: Tifa's daemon, a king stag.
When Vincent changes shapes his daemon tears into pieces beside him and for a moment she's like mist on the verge of death.
Which would be upsetting enough on its own. The worst comes next, when Janet is forced back together again, because her pieces are not in the right places and her rust-stained primaries end in huge jagged claws. It would be easier to witness if her eyes were like Vincent's, empty of thought and soul, nothing but animal, but they stay aware from beginning to end, and they're screaming. It is, Tifa tells him in confidence that night, the most horrifying thing she has ever witnessed.
Cloud pats her back consolingly and Skally rubs her shoulder on Breon's knee and they don't look at each other, because as long as they don't they can keep pretending they were surprised.
Aha, the prototype.
If they looked at each other, they would have to ask themselves this, "prototype of what?"
And then they would have to answer.

also, how the heck did Vincent Valentine end up with a furry-soul-whatsit with a name as ordinary and sane and non-emo-sounding as Janet? :D

The parents' daemon name the child's daemon, just like the parents name the child, so with a name like Vincent I figured they weren't much into weirdass names in that family. I dunno, in my head they seem the kind to have looked for something aggressively normal and serious. XD (though the Rocky Horror flashbacks I kept getting might have been for something in my choice. XD;;;)
