This is an illustration for a potential story with the cast of Gundam Wing in the world of Avatar (I'd be using the world of AtlA, but not the characters, so no Wufei meets Zuko.)

Basically Aang came back to help at the temple, so some Airbenders managed to escape, but he died in the attempt.

Relena is one of the surviving airbenders. (So is Milliardo, but he's not a bender.)

Heero is a Southern waterbender who's living pretty much half-feral after his village was destroyed. (his bending style is therefore cobbled together from what Odin (defecting Fire Nation soldier) taught him (infantrymen are taught non-bending martial arts, but they're still rooted in the same discipline so a lot of it goes against the grain for waterbending) and what he observed could work, hence ugly and full of holes, but what does work is brutally efficient. He mostly uses ice; he's not good at being flowy so water is harder.)

Quatre is a Northern waterbender (his father is the chieftain and was cursed to have only daughters until he begged the spirits for help, hence Quatre's hair color... Quatre then proceeded to demand to be taught healing, goddamnit, whaddya mean a woman's art, it's stupid for a warrior not to know how to do first aid!)

Wufei is a firebender, in the army. I need moar plot for him. I think he's bethroted to Meiran and she's still alive, but i dunno. Might change that if I get an idea.

Trowa and Duo are non-benders. Trowa is from Earth and in the Resistance, Duo's an air/fire war-child living in the Earth Kingdom. (they both manage to be badass just fine without bending, thanks.)


... The current Avatar is Princess Mariemeya, from the Fire Nation. =D


Dilemmas/decisions I made: I liked Relena with blue eyes, but airbenders have gray eyes, so. Same for Wufei, though really that's mostly me going yay! another 'verse where I can give Wufei golden eyes! (the other ones being Garou where he gets tiger-colored eyes when transforming and the FF7 crossover where he gets the yellow materia overlay for his SOLDIER eyeshine.) What can I say, he's hot like that. XD

Waterbenders are dark-skinned, so Heero and Quatre get to be dark-skinned. (all the characters get a bit darker, actually, apart from Relena because airbenders are pale and Wufei because he's already Fire-Nation-looking enough. I'm not sure it shows much on Duo and Trowa in this picture. ~__~)

I don't think I managed to Avatarize Duo's clothes enough. The top's okay but the pants are sooo generic. Hnnn. :/ Oh, whatever.

The sides of Relena's head are shaved, but not the top, because they're trying to balance between holding onto some traditions and hiding themselves so that they can survive. She does have arrows under there, it's just hidden apart from the point on her forehead, which when she goes into town is even hidden under a hat or a headband. And of course the ones on her body. >__> I should have darkened her hair more, but then she didn't look like herself at all anymore. Hrrn.

Yay, new 'verse. If it means we get shiny new fic, I'm down. Also, I love this so, so much. The pic is pretty awesome. I love how Heero's ice doubles as an annoyance mark. His past sounds very grr! I want to see/read more of him...

Trowa looks so aggressive! I'm not used to seeing so much emotion from him. Thanks for making him a non-bender, Earth style on him totally rubs me wrong.

Random bits: I like how sinuous Duo looks, Air/Fire? That's going to be interesting. And Relena! With the hand on Heero's spear and the bland expression (and totally make her eyes blue, I don't care. The thing that drives me nuts about character's eye/hair color is that it is a specific color all the time. Hair/eye color (or its perception) changes with the light, amount of sun exposure, clothes they're wearing, etc.)

tl;dr, I love it lots, DO IT.

♥ It would, but I DON'T HAVE A REAL PLOT YET ;__; I only have the heero and relena meeting so far, and then bits and pieces of things. Mrgh.

Trowa startled me by saying pretty much he wanted to be a Jet analogue, only perhaps less of a total asshole, but it does mean he is singularly badass in my head, though. Also that he's very yay acrobatics.

Duo is v. explosive, oh hey I just figured out something about how he and the other guys meet! :D

re: eyes, though, relena's eyes are usually cornflower blue, light but intensely blue. Unless you're in the dark that's very much not gray. I guess she can have grayish blue but that's not the same. I am sadness. I'm so glad Heero and Quatre's and Trowa's fit already. As for Duo I'm really wondering if he gets to keep the weirdass purple and whether I'll chalk it up to his mixed ancestry... but gray+gold=purple is a bit weird. XD Maybe I can bullshit some spirit-touched shenanigans ohoho :D

I like this idea.

I have a couple points on canon that you probably thought of but didn't mention, so I'll toss them out here.

1. According to Word of God(s), all Air Nomads are benders. So Milliardo will need some explanation. Perhaps he's half-blood, or one of this parents is. Mixed blood could also give you an excuse for Relena to have blue eyes. If one of their parents had some water ancestry it could pop up as a lack of bending in one child and blue eyes in another.

Mixing some water into Duo's background could also give him purple eyes if you wanted.

2. The Avatar cycle starts with air, then progresses through water, earth, and fire. If your current Avatar is fire then you need to do something about the water and earth ones after Aang to get there. I don't know how you could get through two grown, and trained, Avatars and still have a war so presumably you need to kill them both off young.

1. Milliardo is not a bender because all nomads being benders was when they had their temples and their well-settled centuries of civilization and they could devote hours every day to meditation and nurturing their spiritual connection to their element. Now they're on the run, undercover, and they can't afford to keep bisons anymore. So it makes perfect sense to me that they wouldn't all turn out to be benders anymore, since the ability to bend isn't all genetic (there's a pair of identical twins in canon, one of them is an earthebder and the other one isn't. Obv. some of that ability is spiritual.)

Duo's already a fire/air child living in the earth kingdom, I'm not going to randomly give him a water ancestor. XD I'll either bullshit another reason or turn his eyes golden.

Well grey eyes can look violet and Duo is half air.... Though gold eyed Duo is pretty interesting too.

They're background characters in a filler episode, it's easy to miss them. They're pretty much defined by that quote at the top of the page.

Grey eyed Duo might work, but meh. Maybe if I bullshit something about how the only airbender we really see up close is Aang, so purple is also an airbender color so there! ... that'd be way too easy, though. XD *likes being difficult* Duo otherwise looks like he could pass for Earth in coloring, so I want his eyes to be visibly not. And grey isn't that distinctive, it might look brownish with his bangs hanging in his face.

I'd completely buy that purple is an Air eye color, since it's often associated with the spiritual and detached-from-the-world, which pretty much defines the pre-war air culture.

Maybe Duo tangled with a spirit that decided he needed to be marked so other spirits would know what trouble was coming. XD

On the other hand, non-bending Fire people tend to not have the gold eye color: Tai Lee's got brown eyes, and Mai has... well, you could say her eyes are gold, but you could also say they're gray. ...alright, I think those are the only examples from the show, but can't Duo just have purple eyes because he's got purple eyes?

I have no useful commentary, sorry, but this is an awesome picture and an even more awesome concept, and I am glad to have seen it even if you never do anything further with it. (Though if you do write bits of the story, I am so there. *grin*)

<3 Duo's shirt. And if Trowa's skin is a bit darker, it just makes him look like he's slinking along in shadows, which he kinda does in his undercover-sorta way.

Were you picturing this story taking place amid the "Firebenders take over le WORLD" Avatar plotline? I can only begin to imagine how having the Avatar currently be a firebender would work out, especially as so much of AtlA is spent trying to get rid of the Avatar forever. :D

Looking at Heero's spiky ice shoulder, the fact that souped up Fire benders can fly, and well WING.

I suspect Heero's got some gliding potential in there, yes?

My Favorite is Tro, he looks so completely and utterly badass. From the spike on his heel, it makes me think birds' talons. And his spying background in canon. He's probably rather 'fluent' with other martial art styles and likes some death from aboving, or fire/air type kicks?

No, no, I'm glad you kept Relena's hair that color. It just wouldn't be her otherwise. Duo and Trowa don't look especially dark unless you compare them to Relena, but they're definitely darker than her. Trowa looks dangerous, and makes me want to purr X3 I really love his boots, and Wufei's too!! Heero's coat makes me think of a wolf for some reason XD And Duo's pants. Well, actually, they kind of remind me of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so yes, maybe they need something else, lol. That's just the wrong impression. Love his stance though, the attitude it shows. Actually, I like everyone's attitudes here. I do find it interesting that everyone else has a symbol behind them except for Duo :P

Meiran cousin/daughter of Byakko nobles? Excellent firebnder, is forced to hide it cause her family doesn't want her to go to war?

Wufei also excellent firebender, student of Iroh? So he gets to be a scholar too. knows about the White Lotus, maybe.

And Duo looks just fine. generic pants fit almost any story. although it's maybe a bit too fire-nationy. maybe change the color of the dragon and trim?
