gw fandom -- oh hell guys I'm starting to ship 1xR. D:
... Um, yeah. Wait, no, not really. Do I? I'm confused.
It's all this picture's fault.

And yes, it's official art, I think for a recentish DVD cover. I'd never seen it before, discovered it yesterday, and man, it's gorgeous and pings me in my special places.
The "sexy uniforms" button isn't one of my most efficient buttons, usually, but I really like Sank Kingdom uniforms. It's the collars and lapels and that fancy embroidery on them, they're gorgeous. Also, those shoulderpad things. Ngh. (in the same vein I really like the OZ uniforms, to the point that I even find Trowa sexy when he's in one. Usually -- I'm sorry, man -- he doesn't do it for me.)
The thing that pings me hardest here is that Relena is delightfully gender-ambiguous. I have to admit, I know that Relena in general has a marked preference for feminine clothing such as skirts, especially short ones (though her dress style really is a product of the show's era... ew, out-of-date fashion.) and that her little braids are pretty iconic, but when she's all dressed up like this she reminds me not so much of a queen (with all the sitting her butt on a throne and pontificating at people from up there it seems to imply) as a knight about to do battle.
I feel that Relena approaches her pacifism in a very combative fashion at times, and enjoy seeing it reflected. Mmh.
I feel like a bad person to realize that if Relena had been a boy in the series I would have shipped it all over the place. Or if she'd dressed in miniskirts less often, and put on pants and pulled her hair back in a serviceable ponytail. (honestly the braids were okay but the bangs made them look ugly -- part them in the middle!) Or if she'd worn her uniform more often. She wouldn't even have needed to change much -- my view of her would have changed on its own. Tomboy girls being one of my favorite types and all. I wouldn't have read her actions as "silly girl getting lost in places she shouldn't be and getting in trouble" and/or "following men/older, professional, take-charge women around" at such a instinctive level. (oh, internalized sexism.)
The thing that pings me second-hardest is the symbolism of her standing all proud and determined in a white coat in the light, looking at the viewer in an almost challenging way, and him being in the shadow in a darker coat and looking somber/pensive(/worried/discouraged?) at the ground. (Though when you look at the bigger version he's looking up through his bangs and there seems to be a very subtle smile on his lips that makes me prrt in another direction. Oh, Heero.) Also how she's all buttoned up in her cravat and stockings and shoes (the one issue I have with this outfit is, seriously, it would look a hundred times better if she wore knee-high black boots à la Zechs with it, instead of silly stockings and weird shoes), and he just has his own coat thrown over his shoulders, the sleeves hanging empty, and his usual outfit underneath. It's gorgeous and I like the symbolic contrast.
The third-hardest thing that pings me is the fact that he's pretty much half-naked under that coat. ... Not in the sense that he's wearing anything less than usual, and actually a little more, even, but that's it, his usual clothes (tanktop and skintight spandex shorts) only work as the kind of thing someone might wear when they go jogging. When you throw on the nobleman's coat it looks ridiculously underwearish by contrast. Seriously, the way Relena wears hers, I bet she has at least three layers on -- button-up shirt, waistcoat, vest -- and apart from her face there is not one inch of skin exposed. Not at her throat, not at her legs, she's even wearing gloves.
Heero and his bare legs, and that almost invisible bit of shorts. My god. He looks like a poor slum refugee who some nobleman draped a coat on because "what the hell kid, what are you wearing in this weather, you'll die of pneumonia." (or perhaps "my god, why are you in your underclothes." Yyyyeah. *cackles*)
Anyway long story short usually I pretty much see Heero and Relena as soulmates but I do not enjoy thinking of them in a romantic relationship, but I want fic for this picture. I want fic for this picture so bad. The dynamics of brooding!wondering-what-next (-or-perhaps-regretting-the-past)!Heero and determined!steel-will!Relena are ngh. Nobleman's heir/knight-to-be and outcast/low-caste/who-the-fuck-cares-about-caste are even more ngh.
Jo suggested an AU where Heero's the stable boy and/or Relena hires him because he's some kind of horse whisperer. I kind of want that. (it'd explain why a peasant guy knows how to handle fancy horses!) But I think I want something closer to the series' settings itself even more. Perhaps even something that happens in-series. (would have to re-watch the Sank Kingdom eps if I wanted to write it myself.) Dilemma, dilemma. Does it even exist in the fandom? I have no idea.
I'll try not to feel guilty that when Relena dresses as she likes to dress when on her own time (IE skirts and rather relaxed pullovers/loose tops) I don't ship them together. It's, uh, not rewriting her, just a costume/roleplaying kink. Yeah. *cough*

Personally, I generally don't like 1xR... but can kind of get behind it when Relena is *well written* ... the old fanon of her being nothing but a sniffly, whiney, obsessive brat, even years after the series... drives me nuts. But when she *grows up* and becomes more mature... I love it. I think... I think it was sunhawk who's written some of my favorite Relena.... ... I think Mel and christy write another awesome relena (but I might be getting my memories mixed up, honestly.)...
Though as I think about it... I like 1xr more when 2x5;s involved ;) Or 2x3 or 2x4. as long as Duo's in good hands, y'know? *shameless favorite character*
no subject
Depends on which fic, for Mel&Christy. I think in the 2x5 one where Duo kinda disappeared and no one noticed for a while she was pretty cool? It's been so long since I read that one, I'm not sure anymore. But I didn't like her at all in the first chunk of Wufei in Fantasyland; she was pretty much written as Blinded And Made Ugly Inside By Her Obsession, and even if she was redeemed by the power of Duo's awesome that didn't really fix how I felt about the characterization, since she should have been cool from the start dammit. :'(
... I have to admit it's an issue I've only developed recently; the first time I read that fic I was pretty okay with it, what with not liking her anyway and not being so completely obsessed with ICness and bashing issues yet. XD
I understand liking a pairing more if your pet character is taken care of elsewhere, though since Heero is mah baby it's less of a problem for me. XD Also, I'm not big on 2x5 but I don't mind Duo/Hilde (they're cute!) and I have reached a stage where I think Duo would actually be pretty fine with no romantic partner, since he'd still maintain tight friendship bonds with the pilots and other associated people anyway. I mean, in my head if he gets to be good friends with Heero I can manage to read their bond in a way where he only ever saw Heero as a friend/brother anyway, and so it doesn't hurt him or make him feel rejected that Heero chose someone else -- it was always platonic between them! Which considering how much of a 1x2 OTP!!! fanatic I used to be is kind of a feat. XD

I think that as well, I read once somewhere that both of them are a bit too similar(as in devotion, will, responsibility, duty etc.) to really balance each other out
XDXDXD trufax, at first I actually thought he was naked till I zoomed in and saw his hint of spandex
you are right, he is! actually a little question, I have been having cravings these past few weeks for some good, involved, IC Heero-centric fic, but always kind of got discouraged sorting through the mountains of fic out there...do you have a delicious? or off the top of your head recs?(except your stuff, which is EXCELLENT, but sadly not too plentiful XD) *puppy eyes*
I think its not only your fault, from what I remember (and I really need to rewatch...) the writers sometimes didn't seem to know where to go with her character and she was definitively on screen more than any other female on the show, so her developement is a bit all over the place, even though they pulled themselves together for the Sanq-arc
I quite liked this one bonus manga story, where she basically helps Heero stop brooding that reminded me of this picture quite a bit
Anyway, (god I turned rambly again...sorry) this really is an awesome picture thanks for sharing ;)

Personally I just think they're both way too serious, but then again I enjoy Heero/Wufei and Wufei is hardly less serious than Relena! (though he does have all those anger issues to bring into the dynamic that make me prrt in a different way. XD) Also yeah, I can see the connection on how they're each other's inspiration re: their ideals, but that's more mental/philosophical a connection than one that says "unf unf i want in your pants." It's very cerebral as bonds go.
In Newtype I'm writing it as they tried to date before, but Heero came and went pretty often and Relena was super busy with being a politician, and they realized... it made no difference to their bond whether or not they didn't see each other for ages (the second they were in the same place again it all fell together like it used to, and when the other one was gone they didn't miss each other very much due to being so busy with their own life, apart from "it'd be nice if I could talk about this ethical issue I'm having with him/her") and they thought sex was a nice pastime but not one they especially craved either, so really their bond worked also just fine as a friendship.
I could see it as a part-time long-distance relationship that works for them if I added some sexual attraction to them, but in my headcanon I don't really see either of them with a big libido and/or being the instigator. So if they only have sex when the other person asks for it first, um... never then? XD;;
Uh, recs, recs... The issue there is that back when I was in fandom I didn't really keep track of stuff, and I was a silly yaoi twit so uke/seme stupidness and really weird AUs abounded. I'd advise you to read all of
Bonus manga story? *perks up* o.o

HOWEVER. My older brothers loved it, and what I still remember was awesome, and I really, really, REALLY want to give the series another go, but I dunno where to find it. If monies weren't an issue, I'd just go out and buy the whole series, but I couldn't afford that even if I had a job and weren't in college. Any suggestions?

Also when I saw that picture my first thought was, "Aw, did Relena give up her coat b/c Heero is cold?" :D :D :D
no subject
Pff, mine was "did she get it off Noin?" because Heero's coat is dark blue and Noin's too and Relena's is white and I pay way too much attention to that shit. But Noin's and Heero's aren't the same shade or have the same accents! Which I know because... I pay way too much attention to that stuff.
I admit it's pretty neat Heero has his own personnalized Sank coat. It's even pretty consistent across all official art thingies. The other pilots also have their own colors but they only exist in this one single pic, and also they're kinda clashy, so i'm not sure I should take them as official. XD

Here's two 1xR oneshots, one more porny and one more gen.

A longer 1xR, eventual 1xRx2 sadly unfinished, but enough plot and world building to get on with, by Sol who was recced earlier

Here's a "Heero is lost after the war" fic, though no Relena
http://archiveofourown.org/works/179157
Here's a nice Relena one-shot (Sol again) - I always think of that scene where she shot the rose off Une's uniform when I read it:
http://gwaddiction.com/p.php?title=Before+The+Beginning&author=Sol+1056&to=&series=./sol/before&part=6&last=6&authorpage=Sol.shtml&fic=./sol/before6
I would love to read your take on a 1xR relationship. Gundam Wing is one of those enduring fandoms where suddenly I randomly have to read and re-read fanfic in a frenzy, and rewatch the whole thing. I don't know what it is. Also, the older I get, the more I like Relena as a character. I agree that she's very aggressive with her pacifism, and I could totally see her becoming a liberal's liberal in the future, going all power to the people with her politics, just shy of socialism. (or maybe not even just shy)
Depending on how much influence she had over the younger set of the elite, how much grassroots work she inspired, and how many of the older set of the elite died during the war or backed her, she could overturn the world in a wash of pacifist socio-economic class revolution. That sort of potential in her is implied in the GW universe.

That pic is saved so hard, and thank you very much for linking to a highrez version! It gets right at the canon parts of Relena's character that always appealed to me--there's a long section where she and Noin are running around causing stuff to happen and she's wearing this uniform. It's a shame she ever wears anything else.
I like Heero in this pic because how he is shown here hints at the unofficial aspects of him. There's not much in canon where he shows anything but What is On the Box. The neat twist is that then fic writers really do have a choice in how they write him: Actually that limited? Or, if he successfully has hidden parts, what are they and how do you come at them?
...The 'limited' interpretation seems like a cop-out but I think Maldoror wrote him that way. It doesn't limit the possible stories...
