askerian: Wing Zero gundam rising into space with wings spread (1_Wing Zero is shiny)
askerian ([personal profile] askerian) wrote2011-09-12 11:42 am

gw fandom -- oh hell guys I'm starting to ship 1xR. D:

... Um, yeah. Wait, no, not really. Do I? I'm confused.

It's all this picture's fault.

And yes, it's official art, I think for a recentish DVD cover. I'd never seen it before, discovered it yesterday, and man, it's gorgeous and pings me in my special places.

The "sexy uniforms" button isn't one of my most efficient buttons, usually, but I really like Sank Kingdom uniforms. It's the collars and lapels and that fancy embroidery on them, they're gorgeous. Also, those shoulderpad things. Ngh. (in the same vein I really like the OZ uniforms, to the point that I even find Trowa sexy when he's in one. Usually -- I'm sorry, man -- he doesn't do it for me.)

The thing that pings me hardest here is that Relena is delightfully gender-ambiguous. I have to admit, I know that Relena in general has a marked preference for feminine clothing such as skirts, especially short ones (though her dress style really is a product of the show's era... ew, out-of-date fashion.) and that her little braids are pretty iconic, but when she's all dressed up like this she reminds me not so much of a queen (with all the sitting her butt on a throne and pontificating at people from up there it seems to imply) as a knight about to do battle.

I feel that Relena approaches her pacifism in a very combative fashion at times, and enjoy seeing it reflected. Mmh.

I feel like a bad person to realize that if Relena had been a boy in the series I would have shipped it all over the place. Or if she'd dressed in miniskirts less often, and put on pants and pulled her hair back in a serviceable ponytail. (honestly the braids were okay but the bangs made them look ugly -- part them in the middle!) Or if she'd worn her uniform more often. She wouldn't even have needed to change much -- my view of her would have changed on its own. Tomboy girls being one of my favorite types and all. I wouldn't have read her actions as "silly girl getting lost in places she shouldn't be and getting in trouble" and/or "following men/older, professional, take-charge women around" at such a instinctive level. (oh, internalized sexism.)

The thing that pings me second-hardest is the symbolism of her standing all proud and determined in a white coat in the light, looking at the viewer in an almost challenging way, and him being in the shadow in a darker coat and looking somber/pensive(/worried/discouraged?) at the ground. (Though when you look at the bigger version he's looking up through his bangs and there seems to be a very subtle smile on his lips that makes me prrt in another direction. Oh, Heero.) Also how she's all buttoned up in her cravat and stockings and shoes (the one issue I have with this outfit is, seriously, it would look a hundred times better if she wore knee-high black boots à la Zechs with it, instead of silly stockings and weird shoes), and he just has his own coat thrown over his shoulders, the sleeves hanging empty, and his usual outfit underneath. It's gorgeous and I like the symbolic contrast.

The third-hardest thing that pings me is the fact that he's pretty much half-naked under that coat. ... Not in the sense that he's wearing anything less than usual, and actually a little more, even, but that's it, his usual clothes (tanktop and skintight spandex shorts) only work as the kind of thing someone might wear when they go jogging. When you throw on the nobleman's coat it looks ridiculously underwearish by contrast. Seriously, the way Relena wears hers, I bet she has at least three layers on -- button-up shirt, waistcoat, vest -- and apart from her face there is not one inch of skin exposed. Not at her throat, not at her legs, she's even wearing gloves.

Heero and his bare legs, and that almost invisible bit of shorts. My god. He looks like a poor slum refugee who some nobleman draped a coat on because "what the hell kid, what are you wearing in this weather, you'll die of pneumonia." (or perhaps "my god, why are you in your underclothes." Yyyyeah. *cackles*)

Anyway long story short usually I pretty much see Heero and Relena as soulmates but I do not enjoy thinking of them in a romantic relationship, but I want fic for this picture. I want fic for this picture so bad. The dynamics of brooding!wondering-what-next (-or-perhaps-regretting-the-past)!Heero and determined!steel-will!Relena are ngh. Nobleman's heir/knight-to-be and outcast/low-caste/who-the-fuck-cares-about-caste are even more ngh.

Jo suggested an AU where Heero's the stable boy and/or Relena hires him because he's some kind of horse whisperer. I kind of want that. (it'd explain why a peasant guy knows how to handle fancy horses!) But I think I want something closer to the series' settings itself even more. Perhaps even something that happens in-series. (would have to re-watch the Sank Kingdom eps if I wanted to write it myself.) Dilemma, dilemma. Does it even exist in the fandom? I have no idea.

I'll try not to feel guilty that when Relena dresses as she likes to dress when on her own time (IE skirts and rather relaxed pullovers/loose tops) I don't ship them together. It's, uh, not rewriting her, just a costume/roleplaying kink. Yeah. *cough*

Some day, I will get back to the fic where Relena escapes along with Zechs and becomes and OZ pilot herself. Someday. She's really kickass when you give her weapons and tell her it's ok.

It's only a core belief once she knows her birth identity, though. Before that, she's not terribly pacifist; she's not terribly anything, really, besides swept up in global events and having to find her way. Knowing who she was born gives her a way to follow, and she follows it with a convert's zeal, but I never really saw her as a "natural" pacifist, as it were; not given the way she still whips guns out and holds them on people.

If, instead, she was raised, essentially, by Zechs and imbibed his own rationalizations, and most especially if she entered Treize's orbit, I suspect the drive and dynamism of her character would have expressed itself in a very different way. That's what I see as core to her, not the particular expressions (which canon makes rather a hash of, really).

what an awesome write up of WHY you like this. EPIC :D

Personally, I generally don't like 1xR... but can kind of get behind it when Relena is *well written* ... the old fanon of her being nothing but a sniffly, whiney, obsessive brat, even years after the series... drives me nuts. But when she *grows up* and becomes more mature... I love it. I think... I think it was sunhawk who's written some of my favorite Relena.... ... I think Mel and christy write another awesome relena (but I might be getting my memories mixed up, honestly.)...

Though as I think about it... I like 1xr more when 2x5;s involved ;) Or 2x3 or 2x4. as long as Duo's in good hands, y'know? *shameless favorite character*

I pretty much see Heero and Relena as soulmates but I do not enjoy thinking of them in a romantic relationship

I think that as well, I read once somewhere that both of them are a bit too similar(as in devotion, will, responsibility, duty etc.) to really balance each other out

he third-hardest thing that pings me is the fact that he's pretty much half-naked under that coat. .

XDXDXD trufax, at first I actually thought he was naked till I zoomed in and saw his hint of spandex

(Though when you look at the bigger version he's looking up through his bangs and there seems to be a very subtle smile on his lips that makes me prrt in another direction. Oh, Heero.)

you are right, he is! actually a little question, I have been having cravings these past few weeks for some good, involved, IC Heero-centric fic, but always kind of got discouraged sorting through the mountains of fic out there...do you have a delicious? or off the top of your head recs?(except your stuff, which is EXCELLENT, but sadly not too plentiful XD) *puppy eyes*

I wouldn't have read her actions as "silly girl getting lost in places she shouldn't be and getting in trouble" and/or "following men/older, professional, take-charge women around" at such a instinctive level. (oh, internalized sexism.)

I think its not only your fault, from what I remember (and I really need to rewatch...) the writers sometimes didn't seem to know where to go with her character and she was definitively on screen more than any other female on the show, so her developement is a bit all over the place, even though they pulled themselves together for the Sanq-arc

The thing that pings me second-hardest is the symbolism of her standing all proud and determined in a white coat in the light, looking at the viewer in an almost challenging way, and him being in the shadow in a darker coat and looking somber/pensive(/worried/discouraged?) at the ground.

I quite liked this one bonus manga story, where she basically helps Heero stop brooding that reminded me of this picture quite a bit

Anyway, (god I turned rambly again...sorry) this really is an awesome picture thanks for sharing ;)

... Oh, damn you. Stop making me like (and want to cosplay from) things I don't know anything about. D: What the hell, self. I'd even volunteer to write that thing if I didn't think I sucked.

I could always sketch something... um. Better stop before I end up watching the whole thing. ;;

Nnnnrgh. Not fair. ;__; I'm supposed to be the one that lures people into random obscurities. I know I'll just end up pulling a marathon.

... Well, I do have two more days of sick leave...

their ideals, but that's more mental/philosophical a connection than one that says "unf unf i want in your pants." It's very cerebral as bonds go.

this^^, yeah I see them as being not very active in a personal/sexual relationships, because so much to do^^. That's why Duo works so well with Heero, someone to understand his struggles in a way (like Relena could as well, in some ways I think Relena could understand him in an even deeper level, because they are both very thought-driven people), but also someone to tell him to enjoy life and slow down a bit.

but I can never think of anyone to pair Relena with then...(except with one were Quatra/Relena is sort of hinted at and I could actually get behind that^^)

Bonus manga story? *perks up* o.o

Well there are quite a few released(even though I obviously remembered wrong, Heero cheers Relena up in the story I was thinking of *sigh* still its very sweet and Relena is really likable in this)Because I remembered this I actually hunted them down right now, so you'll get a list with download links (because most of the online reading scans are really crappy)
maybe you missed some^^

Episode Zero: a prequel short story compilation with one chapter devoted to each pilot and Relena, which the makers said is totally canon and they just didn't have the time and funds to animated it (Heero (http://www.mediafire.com/?y2zzw3ny4dz), Duo (http://www.mediafire.com/?zzotynmymqn), Quatre (http://www.mediafire.com/?mzy1hn43yjn/), Wufei (http://www.mediafire.com/?lygznnjjtmi), Relena (http://www.mediafire.com/?ndlywdgafjy), Operation Meteor (http://www.mediafire.com/?41coame2zl2), Preventer 5 (set in AC 197) (http://www.mediafire.com/?w2llyg2gyn1) or complete as torrent (http://www.bakabt.com/download/146613/1315842959/b24658ff18353f16639b22c780161f30/697440/mobile-suit-gundam-wing-episode-zero.torrent))

Blind Target (http://www.filestube.com/search.html?q=gundam+wing+blind+target&select=All): Basically a one volume manga about some mercenary group targeting the pilots(and Relena) to get the Gundams

Ground Zero (http://www.filestube.com/80ddTCw2ya5uLlAVDFUbLA/Gundam-Wing-Ground-Zero-Chapter-03.html): Heero tries to live a normal life but suddenly someone tries to get at his gundam + bonus story with the mentioned lovely wonderful Relena Heero interaction

thanks for the recs^^ *checks them out*

Yessss that's the M&C one I think I' m thinking of. It's the one I remember most anyway. R..reunion? I don't think I read Wufei in Fantaasyland, or if I did, it was SO LONG ago that we were still expecting regular updates ;)

we've all grown up a lot, though. I can remember loving totally silly fics where NO ONE was characterized correctly (ie -- NINMUNINMUNINMU!Heero or psychopath!heero or fics where 90% of heero's lines were "hn" or "...", stupid!duo, girl-with-a-penis!quatre, ...!trowa and ONNAJUSTICEONNA!Wufei.) and more of the point was YAY THEY'RE GAY I LOVE IT. ... Bleh. :)

XD Duo is definetly my favorite XD Don't really have a 2xH opinion honestly, out side of the fact that Hilde is very much a 'eh, she's a character' character to me. ... I actually admit I have some love for him getting together with 'odd' pairings, honestly (2x3/4/5) because it suggests a little more 'thought' put into characters and how they work together, rather then just the default 'oh they go together because everyone says they do.' I've seen some awesome 1x3's and 2x4's.

also, totally with you on platonic friendships too. those are pretty awesome too :) as long as the long's there, and.. well.. good story is so much more important then the relationships <3

Personally, I sort of wonder if Heero is wearing anything else under that coat >.>

Yeah, as far as I'm concerned, Mal and Sol are the gold-standard for most any fandom they write, so you can't go wrong there. Drums of Heaven is fantastic, in particular, and has a very different take on the post-war boys than I've seen elsewhere. From Mal, my favorite story is 2x5, so probably not what ravel's looking for (but it really is awesome, it's called Freeport~). The Arrangement is 1x5 and also exceptional, but if I remember right, it's more from Wufei's perspective than Heero's. Still, all very very good fics; I highly recommend them (if askerian's rec isn't enough for you ;) ).

Also, this picture is kick-ass. Thanks for posting it! =)

[identity profile] rayemars.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
...If you find any fic like that, honestly, I might read it! Because that pic is startlingly yum, for a series I read like one manga volume of.

"Reunion/Rebuilding" Relena by Mel and Christy is AWESOME. She's sassy, smart, an awesome friend to the boys / fiancee to Heero, and just all around wonderful. There is an awesome scene where she's spending the week with Duo while WuFei is out on a Preventers mission, is watching the news, watches reporters harass Heero about her whereabouts, calls Heero's cell, and tells off all the reporters on LIVE TV over the PHONE. It makes me giggle with glee just thinking about it. Mel (mel-redcap.livejournal.com) is reposting a lot of their fics now as they pick them back up, and I really, really hope they continue "Rebuilding" soon.

Argh. I watched GW a little when it was still airing on CN, but I was in like...uh... elementary school and I was more interested in Sailor Moon at the time, so I never really went squee about it.
HOWEVER. My older brothers loved it, and what I still remember was awesome, and I really, really, REALLY want to give the series another go, but I dunno where to find it. If monies weren't an issue, I'd just go out and buy the whole series, but I couldn't afford that even if I had a job and weren't in college. Any suggestions?

[identity profile] nilladriel.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man this whole post. I don't know how you do it but when you post shit like this I want to run back and rewatch GW. (Which is funny, because when I was in the fandom? I NEVER WATCHED IT.)

Also when I saw that picture my first thought was, "Aw, did Relena give up her coat b/c Heero is cold?" :D :D :D

Oh, I'm fine, it's just the Most Persistent Flu Ever. The fever refuses to go down even after a week of rest. The doctor didn't find anything else, so I suppose it's just my horrible luck speaking.

... I'll download the first episodes soon. ;___;
