Character introspection, 492 words. Not what I was trying to write, but it's what came, so.

Warning for mention of sexual assault.

Sometimes, just like she knows how to nurture a plant into flowering, she knows not to go down this or that street, or to put on a hood to hide her face in shadows, or to walk stooped and giggle crazily so the roaming packs of bored young thugs and Shinra militia will look elsewhere for entertainment.

Sometimes, she doesn't.

Sometimes she doesn't know that it's going to rain and she's just as surprised as others when dirty water starts filtering through the Plate; sometimes she doesn't know what is hidden inside a seed and instead of a fruit she gets a vegetable.

She doesn't know, this one time, that she shouldn't have stepped there, it's just a normal street and a normal day and she ends up running home with her arms crossed over the torn front of her dress.

Her mother tried very hard to shield her from any awareness of sex, but it's everywhere, in everyone, every animal, every plant. She's always been aware of the cycle, in some way -- seduction, conception, birth, growth, seduction; she just grew along her understanding of it. So when she realizes that while she's still slender and cute and non-threateningly tiny, she's also developing actual cleavage -- when she pushes her arms together and leans forward, at least -- she also understands that often, being a woman means having men want you.

Some men are good, and some are not, and in the Slums there are many who are not -- many who have been refused so much that they believe they should just take instead of ask or they'll never have anything at all, and many more who wouldn't have asked even if they'd grown elsewhere.

And her white Materia still refuses to do anything, and Shield orbs are rather expensive, even if she wanted to risk climbing up to the plate to look for a shop that carries them. And she doesn't weigh enough for her punches to do much of anything. It made the drunk guy who tore her dress laugh.

She doesn't like the idea of cutting up people -- she would want to fix them -- so knives and swords are out. She can't aim worth beans, and constant refills on munitions cost too much, so guns are out too. But the road sign at the end of that metal pole she picked up off the ground did build more than enough momentum to crash quite nicely in that man's face. And she appreciates the extra reach.

So sometimes, when she's done caring for her flower patch inside the church, she finds a broken off shingle, a broom handle, a random metal pole, and she swings it around, and she learns how to keep her balance. She's never going to be great, she thinks, but all she asks of it is the ability to keep out of arm's reach of those rare people she's unwilling to touch.

Wheee SHINY. *_* I loved all of it, all the details and Aeris' natural awareness of everything including sex because hello, part of life, and how the Slums are so dangerous and how she would pretend to be crazy to drive people off, and, and. The reasoning behind her weapon choice is just PERFECT. Thanks for writing.

A really in depth look into Aeris, I love how you look beyond 'she's a white mage type, get the girl a staff'. Her personality shone through beautifully here and nothing failed to make sense given the canon either.

Good little ficlet.

Aeris seems so pure in the games, like her pretty little flowers, but how could she be, growing up in the slums? Cetra genes only do so much.

I love how she pretends to be crazy so people won't bother her.

For some reason, I think the best part of this is the way you build up the creepy subtext of just what happened to her, and then end it with an offhanded, "Yeah, picked up a metal pole with the street sign still attached and clobbered the jerk. Hm. Nice heft on that thing..." Awesome. ^_^

I just don't see Aeris being easily impressed that way, somehow. XD Okay, she's small and tiny and frail and not a fighter, but she has so much self-confidence and doesn't scare easy. Tons of horrific shit piled up on her in canon and she never cracked. I'm sure it creeped her out for a while but she'd try not to dwell on it and only think about how, hey, she managed to save herself, and she's gonna make sure it won't happen again. I'm sure Tifa would have had a stronger emotional reaction.

I'm glad to hear that. XD I cracked myself up something awful when I figured out that she totally would. Oh Aeris, why do so many people write you so boringly saintly. XD

I can agree that she comes across as pure, but her actions speak otherwise. "Hey Cloud, how about you crossdress, and don't forget the sexy underwear!" comes to mind. XD That and the way she asked Cloud out on a date and behaved during it, I don't see an innocent flower there. ... Also, the slums, Hojo, and the Planet in her head. XD In a lot of ways she fills the holy earth-mother angel stereotype, but she's also very down to earth in other ways.

I wanted to write a ficlet of her at five year old and her at twenty, as well, to get used to writing her (she's hard to balance!) but the ficlets didn't want to come together. *sadface*

Thank you muchly, dearest. u.u I was trying to make myself understand the way she thinks, because man sometimes she's hard to balance between impish self-assured girl and benevolent otherworldly half-goddess.

I don't know who the fic is about but i do really like it. Like you said, it was a character introspection, and I think it's a good one.

This is amazing. I love the sheer simple logic of it most of all, which I know is an odd thing to love, but every line of this screams "Person who put serious thought into what they're writing, here!" I love that; my compliments.
