Playstation woes.

So... I was in the middle of a replay of FF7 on my brother's Playstation 2. And starting to play Vagrant Story, which is also a PS1 game.

From what I understood, you kind of need to still use a PS1 memory card for 'em.

Turns out my brother's girlfriend threw them away because Julien forgot about the little detail that I do still play those old PS1 games and told her they were useless now. (and then promptly forgot about telling her so, because he wasn't thinking. >__>)

To which I say HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE. They kind of don't sell them anymore, and I can't buy online anyway so the existence of those ridiculously expensive eBay cards is a moot point.

Saro being awesome offered me one of her memory cards -- the problem being... we know the American games cannot be played on European consoles and vice versa, but neither of us has any idea if the memory cards are similarly regionally locked. It would kinda blow if we found out after she bothered to part with one of her only three cards and mailed it to me.

Does anyone know? Or know where to ask? We both googled the hell out of it and couldn't find anything on that topic. ;__;

edit: WOOHOO. other-brother who still lives home (on the weekends >.> mwahaha) just got a PS3 and apparently it doesn't even use memory cards AND it's backward compatible with PS1 games! I hope it works. But thank you guys for the offers ^__^ ♥

In other news, guess who decided they were bored at the camping and came back home early with no warning? -___- here I was so happy to have the apartment for a whole week to myself. Woe woe woe. Oh well, means i won't have to cook. >__>

I presume PS3 is not an option in this situation (makes its own memory cards so the game 'thinks' its saving to something it is not.

I'd just like to chime in, our PS3 works fine with both FFVII and Vagrant Story and the virtual memory card thing. So, if you have a PS3, I'd go for it.

Hmm. Maybe tried a used game store? Or Thrift store? I got old games and such at thrift stores and sometimes they have game cards. Also, I would like to kill your brother and his gf for you if you want. >>;; Tossing out old game stuff makes me sadface. *is pretty sure her mom sold her NES games*

[identity profile] sohaliatalitha.livejournal.com 2009-08-20 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I pity you.... my game card once broke down at a really critical moment when I was playing FFVII. I always use CEX for anything like this:

http://www.cex.co.uk/products/Gaming/Console%20Gaming/Playstation%20Accessories/index.php?sku=s3rdpsxmemcard&name=Value%20PS1%20Memory%20Card%20%283rd%20Party%29&mode=buy

If you're desperate they sell them for next to nothing at a shop near where I work and I'll mail one to you - and I'm in england so that solves the europe problem.

If you want to drop me a line I'm on kaiserineblue @ hotmail . co . uk

good luck!!

Do you have a used game store near you? Or within a day drive of you? I got myself a PS1 mem card from my local used game store. *hoards like a greedy, hoarding thing* I'd recommend you do the same and PRAY. Good luck!

[identity profile] armina-skitty.livejournal.com 2009-08-21 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
....Alright, Sony? Why did you not make this memory card thing obsolete and/or transferable in the first place!?!? *grumblehuff*

Good luck with all that!

No idea on the matter, but I so feel you.

I just moved last week and cannot find mine at all ;-;

I wish you luck on your quest for a compatiable one! ;~;

[identity profile] alexandrukas.livejournal.com 2009-08-20 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
They aren't region locked the game discs have a region code on them that the console compares to the system's set region. This is done to stop people from pirating(but more importantly importing new games) games. Companies don't give a shit about memory cards.

[identity profile] alexandrukas.livejournal.com 2009-08-21 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I was of help.

[identity profile] nilladriel.livejournal.com 2009-08-21 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, they're not region locked. :) Saro can feel free to send her memory card to you.

[identity profile] severedscythe.livejournal.com 2009-08-21 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, bb. <3 Im sorry to hear that. I've still got my old memory card kicking about somewhere. If I had more than one, I'd mail it to you quick smart.

[identity profile] rayemars.livejournal.com 2009-08-21 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Going by the above comments, it seems that the memory cards aren't locked; there's a game store in the city that I know sells PS1 cards because I bought one there about a month ago, and at the time they still had more. If you need another, I can check that they still have them.

[identity profile] rayemars.livejournal.com 2009-08-21 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, excellent! Here's hoping it works just fine so you can play!

[identity profile] gold-panner.livejournal.com 2009-08-21 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
I live in a PAL region, and I'd be happy to send you one of mine! ^___^

[identity profile] gold-panner.livejournal.com 2009-08-23 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
No worries, just know it's there! I hope it works out for you.

[identity profile] jammaster-goat.livejournal.com 2009-08-23 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I just went through a similar situation with my Gamecube. They do still carry the memory cards, but they are now over $20 instead of under $5. -_-;;

Luckily, we have 'Stuff' here. An electronic type thrift store. Was able to find a never used one for the right price.

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2009-08-23 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man... your folks came back early? That totally blows. I would have been in tears. Nothing quite as frustrating as having 'alone time' jerked out from under you unexpectedly. *hugs you*

[identity profile] kkoganei1328.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
(Long time lurker) I was going to say, if you have a PS3,why cant you just download FFVII From the playstation store? Its out for the PS3 and PSP so you wont even have to bother with the whole memory card thing..............
