Just Because. It helps me to clarify them in my mind to be able to talk about them, so if you have any questions or "this bit doesn't make sense" comments, go ahead -- they're still in-progress.

Eye, hair, Skin color: Copper-red hair, tanned/caramel skin -- as for his eyes I hesitate between black and hazel-brown.

Personality: Friendly, curious, dislikes authority, needs to know how things work, environment activist, passive-aggressive, gets angry fast and blows off steam by ranting and yelling openly, doesn't often keep a grudge but when he does it's forever.
Unique Characteristics: Mind-blind -- very low empathy/telepathy scores, which make him unable to receive telepathic messages and makes him all but invisible to empaths.
Background:
-Education: went to a sciences-oriented university; doing his doctorate in exobiology, subsection : marine life.
-How did his family impact the character? : Both his parents are wealthy doctors and he lived in a safe area; he can't wrap his mind around ghetto or war-torn area life and tends to be unconsciously condescending to people of modest means.

killing is never okay, and while he might kill to save himself and others if there was absolutely no other way -- unless he hesitated too much and lost his chance -- he would regret it forever.

Sees no problem with people sleeping around as long as it's fun for everyone. For himself, he has his standards, but they depend some on how much he's had to drink. He prefers casual mid-term relationships, and isn't looking for serious, long-term partners, but isn't against one-night-stands either. He's straight; doesn't have a problem with gay people, but gets a little uncomfortable with being hit on, especially if the other guy is bigger or more manly.

-Education: Left school at 14, got an apprenticeship as a mechanic; he started on land vehicles but eventually drifted toward small spaceships.
-How did his family impact the character? : Single mother with low income, she raised him as well as she could but they didn't have a lot of time to socialize. He was outside with his pack of friends a lot. They still have friendly relations, but aren't especially close.
Likes: working on motors, being with people he trusts, part of a solid group with a purpose, stealth-teasing people
Dislikes: rain, loud people, having his space invaded, having a conflict between what's needed and what's fair. He knows life isn't fair, but he still wishes it would be.

He'd never turn his back on someone who kills or maims a defenseless person, though, and might take it upon himself to arrange an accident if he knows the killer will otherwise hang around.

Sex is meaningless and he doesn't care with who, male or female or neither, who cares what they look like because for him, it's just to get off. But seeing as he's an empath without solid shields and even mind-blind people open up during sex, he still has to choose carefully. No people who get off on degrading him or themselves, no people looking for love or at least affection, no people who can't be bothered to use a freaking condom, no active telepaths because then he gets lost. As a result he's more often celibate than not.

Considering as he's with a scavenging/pirate crew and feels more at home than he did back home, that should tell y'all something. Rich people should share the wealth, those asshole. Little grandmas and ghetto families probably have nothing worth the trouble, so unless he was dying from hunger he'd leave them alone.

Anyone not from his in-group is to be regarded warily. People from other planets are weird about some things, but he won't be a bigot over it -- he'll just think they're weird and then proceed to treat them just like the outsiders who happen to have been born where he is: with wariness and snark.

-How did her family impact the character? : she feels utterly horrible about being selfish and considering her feeling of being stifled as more important than settling down and having children. Automatically docile and submissive with leader-type males.

Dislikes: babysitting -- she likes children alright and she's very responsible, but she still wishes she could do something else; being relied on.
Hobbies: seeding beautiful seaweeds and collecting new plants

Longterm goals: keep drifting and learning as long as possible.

How does the character react to stress? :
she isn't physically aggressive. She cries when she gets angry, and might yell a little, but she would keep that to a minimum since she doesn't want to attract danger, either. She might retreat behind her smiling, dutiful facade and deny she feels anything else.

Her religion says that sometimes, mercy-killing is the right thing to do; if she believed it was, she would just do it, simple and quick like she would hunt and kill a fish, with no hard feelings. If she was pushed far enough to kill, she would not regret it, because she most likely would not even see the enemy as sane and human; she'd see it as either a crazy, out of control man who's gone too far to heal, or a dangerous predator, which must be eliminated for their own good as well as the common good.
-Sex?
For her society, sex is penis in vaginaand is intended to make babies; anything else doesn't count as anything but "being friendly". She had a close friend/girl-cousin with who she twinned, but she doesn't see it as sex. Romance is nice, but is totally disconnected from sex from her point of view. She's never had intercourse with a man, and fears it a little because it will mean she will eventually get pregnant and get tied down to a pod.

It's okay to steal from other pods because they're fair game. But mermaids are also fair game -- they could also be stolen.

Other pods make her very nervous because she doesn't want to become a wife and mother just yet; two-tails fascinate her even more than she pities them, because they're so strangely alien and she doesn't feel as much at risk with them. She thinks she could always escape.

Eye, hair, Skin color: Gorgeous grass-green eyes with thick black lashes, swarthy skin, short and messy black hair.
Body Type: On the short side of normal, broad-shouldered, muscled.
Age: thirtyish? He doesn't say.
Personality: Smirky, mysterious mastermind. Usually benevolent toward his people, but can also be quite ruthless and tends to manipulate people with no remorse.
Unique Characteristics: Projective empath -- pretty rare, usually empathy is receptive and telepathy projective.
Background: Not a clue. He's secretive, the ass.
Likes: crafting plans out of thin air, when his people get along, when he gets to tease someone he likes or con a stranger.
Dislikes: when his plans don't pan out, when his people get themselves hurt stupidly, traitors.
Hobbies:practicing his evil laugh and his "soon, my precious" expressions. I dunno. Playing violent videogames with the rest of the guys, probably.
Friends, significant others: His crew -- though they don't have an equal relationship by far. He's the captain, they're his crew. He doesn't get too intimate.
Longterm goals: Who knows.

How does the character react to stress? : Stops smirking and gets to work. He works best under pressure, so he can get remarkably competent. He's a little addicted to adrenaline, I think.

As long as it's not one of his people, he wouldn't have nightmares over it. He would only do it when he deems it necessary and best for his people, but onc he takes the decision he won't feel bad about it very long.
-Sex?
Other people's sex lives aren't his business as long as they don't mess up the structure of his crew. He's aware and enjoys the fact that quite a few of his people have a crush on him, and even enjoys teasing them, but would never want to jeopardize anything by shacking up with one of them. He's naturally more inclined toward girls, but he sees nothing wrong with making out or even having sex with a guy, as long as he's in control and it's just for the pleasure.

The Navigator

Nickname, if any: does "Bitch" count? It's kind of a pet name at this point...

Eye, hair, Skin color: blond, straight jaw-length hair, caucasian, brown eyes.

Age: You don't ask a woman that. (between 25 and 35, probably)
Personality: really fucking annoying and enjoys it. She's competent and self-assured, and doesn't bother with modesty. Sexually aggressive, voluntarily abrasive, she can be hilarious, until she targets you and then it stops being funny. She gets huffy when chastized.
Unique Characteristics: wears a headkerchief to keep her hair under control in zero-G. (she and Blue come from the same planet.)
Background:
-Education: Went through a special school for the guild of Astrogaters, which is pretty nice; she could have had a nicer job, but due to being a bitch and getting kicked out of school before she could pass the second level of her diploma, she has very few contacts who can vouch for her.
-How did her family impact the character? : they drove her to be excellent, and she makes a point of pride to be. She also hasn't talked to them since she got kicked out of the university.
Likes: needling people, crosswords, mathematics.
Dislikes: being told to shut up or expected to apologize.
Hobbies: crosswords, dancing in clubs. Her body isn't all that sexy, but she has confidence in spades.

If someone gets killed in front of her, she gets sick and shaky, but she keeps her head -- surprisingly rational on whether to run and where to hide the body. On killing people on her own, it would be more animal reflex (if the guy beat her or terrorized her so much she snaps) and then she'd run and feel afraid for a while. She wouldn't really feel guilty, just scared of consequences.
-Sex?
Straight but does indeed do the fake lesbian harem thing. She'll do a lot of things for a guy even if she doesn't get off on them all that much, because she wants to keep her partner happy and it matters more than her own enjoyment. She's good in bed but she doesn't really like it. Has no opinion on gay guys save that they're the only type of guy she'll feel totally at ease around.

Has no real opinion on theft either. Vaguely thinks that it's bad to stal from people, but back when she was with a man, she would still do it if she was told to. The ones that are still open to complete scraping and re-creating are Darel the nerd and Dhaval the nervous pilot, who are cliche mc.clicheville and totally undeveloped beside. The rest of the pirate crew is still open to new quirks that will make them more original -- so far they're all based on a general concept and haven't been personnalized very much yet. If anything comes to your mind please don't hesitate to suggest it.

Her religion says that sometimes, mercy-killing is the right thing to do; if she believed it was, she would just do it, simple and quick like she would hunt and kill a fish, with no hard feelings. If she was pushed far enough to kill, she would not regret it, because she most likely would not even see the enemy as sane and human; she'd see it as either a crazy, out of control man who's gone too far to heal, or a dangerous predator, which must be eliminated for their own good as well as the common good.
-Sex?
For her society, sex is penis in vaginaand is intended to make babies; anything else doesn't count as anything but "being friendly". She had a close friend/girl-cousin with who she twinned, but she doesn't see it as sex. Romance is nice, but is totally disconnected from sex from her point of view. She's never had intercourse with a man, and fears it a little because it will mean she will eventually get pregnant and get tied down to a pod.

He's aware and enjoys the fact that quite a few of his people have a crush on him, and even enjoys teasing them, but would never want to jeopardize anything by shacking up with one of them. -Education: dropped out of school at 17, took up jobs in bars and clubs, ended up hostess -- basically sweet-talking guys so they would spend more money on drinks. Ended up having sex with a few of those men and she's still not sure whether it was rape or prostitution.
-How did her family impact the character? : Not favorably -- her father was distant and vaguely threatening -- didn't make a habit of hitting his wife, but she grew up with the feeling that he easily could and it would be her and her mother's fault if he did. After that she tended to attract the big, vaguely threatening, could-easily-be-abusive type. A few of them were.

On killing people on her own, it would be more animal reflex (if the guy beat her or terrorized her so much she snaps) and then she'd run and feel afraid for a while. She wouldn't really feel guilty, just scared of consequences.

Straight but does indeed do the fake lesbian harem thing. She'll do a lot of things for a guy even if she doesn't get off on them all that much, because she wants to keep her partner happy and it matters more than her own enjoyment. She's good in bed but she doesn't really like it. Has no opinion on gay guys save that they're the only type of guy she'll feel totally at ease around.

Has no real opinion on theft either. Vaguely thinks that it's bad to stal from people, but back when she was with a man, she would still do it if she was told to. The ones that are still open to complete scraping and re-creating are Darel the nerd and Dhaval the nervous pilot, who are cliche mc.clicheville and totally undeveloped beside. The rest of the pirate crew is still open to new quirks that will make them more original -- so far they're all based on a general concept and haven't been personnalized very much yet. If anything comes to your mind please don't hesitate to suggest it.

They're more scavengers than pirates at times, also they specialize in sneakily snatching cargo from warehouses and flying off. Do a few odd jobs for some mafias... They don't really attack people directly if they can afford to sneak past or run away instead.

Personally, I think it would be cool if there was a character who was kind of a loose-cannon that sometimes made the others nervous, or who does things not exactly socially-acceptable because they really don't know or don't care, like punching someone just because of who the someone talks to them.
And after reading this, I feel the urge to do my own character spread like this. ^_^

Communications mostly means he spies on people's messages so they know where and when to attack actually. XD Darel is also a hacker, but that's cliche with the whole nerdy personality, so I'm not sure how to fix that -- either he's nerdy in attitude or he's a hacker, but not both. And I wanted to make him a conman, but he's not socially aware and manipulator enough for it to work. u__u; ... I think i'm gonna have to rethink the character, since it's the abilities of hacker and conman the crew actually needs. Hrrm.
XD Lujayn sometimes makes other people nervous. But Khiaw wouldn't keep anyone who makes the others uncomfortable if they also didn't have a gift or ability they absolutely can't do without, and i'm not sure what that would be.

The classic SciFi trope is the Captain is a pilot, but there's no reason he needs to be. Vartan might have had some basic pilot training depending on what his military background is and Alind would be logically trained at some degree (the 50s-60s SF tended to have piloting and astrogation as separate specialties).
And what is definition of astronaut in this case? Technically all spacers would be astronauts unless the word has taking on a specialized meaning.

here I used astronaut as someone who suits up and goes into actual space, mostly trained to do repairs on the hull and do zero G maneuvers (and break into other ships via their hull as well. XD) Blue can put on a suit and work out here, but he's not that good with huge gloves. They all have space suits, but not all of them are willing to go gallivanting outside the ship unless the alternative is certain death. Anyway, it's mostly Lujayn's job to go outside and get rid of debris that get stuck in their nets and check nothing's come loose (their ship's kinda old so it's not as rare as they wish it were.) She does it once a day and it takes her a couple of hours. >_>;; I figured it deserved being listed as an actual job.
