I'm just gonna copy and paste a friend of mine's explantion.

Danny Phantom is not an anime-show. It's a Nicktoon. The premise is that Danny Fenton is a 14-year-old kid from a family of ghost hunters. He thinks his parents are pretty wacky- then they build a portal into the ghost zone. It doesn't work. Danny steps inside and gets shocked. Ectoplasm is fused with his molecules and he becomes half-ghost- meaning he can switch between human and ghost form, the latter in which he can use his ghost powers (flight, intangibility only at first, but later he develops the ability to shoot ectoplasmic energy beams and- everyone's favorite- the ghostly wail). Getting zapped seemed to activate the portal- now that it's working, ghosts are coming through and Danny has to defend his hometown, Amity Park. Along the way, story arcs develop, Danny matures, the town becomes aware of "Danny Phantom" (but not that Fenton is Phantom) and craziness starts happening. Including Danny discovering he's not the first human-ghost hybrid...
