Naruto had always been a problem, especially as a cub. Then again, Sasuke always had issues in general. Not that it was uncommon for wolves to act as such, but neither had been adoptable for very specific reasons, reasons that tugged at Sakura's heart and wouldn't let go.

Naruto was the product of poached parents. He was left to himself for a long time in the wild because of it, until Iruka-sensei found him and gave him a temporary home until he could be adopted out. For Naruto being of wolfen blood had never helped him with finding a home, or even with getting along with the domestic dogs that were held at the Pound where Iruka-sensei worked. As a result, Naruto had social problems and yearned for attention like nothing Sakura had ever seen before. She took him in because his deliciously blue eyes wouldn't leave her alone. They haunted her dreams.

Sasuke, dear little Sasuke. The little dark-furred wolf cub was broody, unsociable, and introvert enough to make Sakura scream sometimes. He was from a damnably beautiful bloodline of domestic wolves. Unfortunately, his elder sibling, a promising young, red-eyed wolf had come in contact with a rabid animal's bite and, in turn, passed it on to the rest of the pack while Sasuke had been at a training session with his handler. Afterwards, the handlers at the facility had been unable to get him to respond to their methods. Having been close-knit with his pack was devastating for him. His dark eyes, angry and pained under their smooth glossiness, tore at Sakura's soul. They haunted her nightmares.

And so, that was how Sakura had been dumped with two undeniably uncontrollable wolves. She had taken them without much thought, but with a feeling in her stomach that burned into the back of her throat every time she thought of the home she could provide for them.

"Good luck, Sakura-san," Iruka-sensei had said as he handed her their chain-linked leashes. Not that she would come to need them. She came to learn of the vicious, nearly suffocating loyalty both animals paid to her. And she loved them both, even with Naruto's over-exuberance and Sasuke's tendency to lie on his corner of the couch for hours on end, watching her but never showing anything but a calculating gaze. She loved it even when they fought in the yard, pulling tuffs of fur from each other's scruff, snarling and spitting like true wild creatures. She loved them even through the car accident that nearly took Sasuke's life, through the over-zealous battle between them that had given Naruto thirty-six stitches. But most of all, she loved how they were together.

Her boys, her loyal, loving boys. In the end, it was all worth it.
