So. I still don't know what should happen, though I like the idea of making a series of one-shots in this universe instead of a huge multipart. But... hmm.

I also know what some of the characters are. But as for some others, not a clue.



1) A.I.s are rather rare, and, in case they are humanoid, tend to be very big humans. More often than not they're not mobile, or they're like mini tanks or stuff; the technology needed to host an AI is still rather voluminous. In that regard, Uchiha models are an exception, on account of being rather recent military technology; civilians don't have access to this level of technology.

2) Cyborgs (IE half machine half human) rarely are cyborg at more than 50%; In polite society, it's seen as rather freakish to be more metal than that. (though people from the underground kind of don't mind that. XD)

3) Same for Furries -- and they can get stuff grafted on, but when they start getting remodeling surgery to actually have paws, or wings, or things like that, people go from considering it cute/frivolous to considering it rather WTF.

The society is heading for a rather explosive collapse; big corporations have as much or more power than lawfully elected mayors, presidents, senators and the like, the politicians are corrupt, the police is either corrupt or overwhelmed. Black market = booming. Insurance = hahaha, good luck.

Part of that is actually Itachi's fault -- the Uchiha units were very effective; maybe too much, seeing as they were used to control the polulation very strictly. People were starting to feel oppressed and mildly paranoid, what with Uchihas being virtually indistinguishable from humans. And then suddenly, bam, hundreds of Uchiha units wiped out. They had a field day. But eventually, people would probably have rebelled anyway...



So.

LIST OF PEOPLE I ALREADY HAVE DECIDED ABOUT. I am not looking for new suggestion on them, unless it's only on the way in which they fit into another character's backstory.

-Itachi and Sasuke : paramilitary androids.
-Naruto: fox-furry and a cyborg repairman. (I know where he's coming from, why, and how he fits in with the others)
-Tsunade: doctor, Sakura: nurse.
-Neji: Hiashi's clone and Hyuuga Corporation property. (Hinata and Hanabi are, presumably, Hiashi's daughters.)
-Kakashi is *BLEEP* SPOILER, and Orochimaru *BLEEEEEP*. (in other words, I already know, but i'm not telling. :D) The Fourth : *BLEEEEEEEEPBLEEPBLEEP*
-Ino: officially accredited AI programmer. Chouji: hardware-type-guy. Shika: hacker in his spare time, when he can be bothered -- still better than Ino.
-Iruka: runs an orphanage and teaches people subversive stuff about ideals, peace, respect, justice and all that.
-Zabuza and Haku: Crime lord and his boytoy.
-Lee and Gai: paramedics and/or physical therapists.
-Kiba: street-tough dog-furry, selling contraband with Shino (come on, Shino's coat looks like it's full of watches, or possibly weed) Also selling electronical stuff that Naruto builds (will have to figure out what)
-Kabuto: orderly at Tsunade's hospital

PEOPLE I'M STILL NOT ENTIRELY SURE ABOUT

-Gaara: raccoon furry, also a druggie. XD (ideas for the sandsibs job? Probably something quite illegal. I like the idea of them being the children/hit squad of a Mafia-type-boss.)
-Hinata: CEO daughter; how the hell does she meet Shino and Kiba. (but I will have to find that out on my own, I think, seeing as if it happens, it will only be as a result of the Itachi/Neji subplot.)
-Jiraiya: apart from writing porn...?

What are the other characters doing? What are they? Any ideas?

I like the idea of Ino as a hacker. I mean, her specialty in canon is taking over your mind and body, so that would be compatible with the technofuture. Though, now I'm imagining Ino strapped into The Beast from X like Satsuki is, with plugs and all. Ahahaha, then she'd definitely need Chouji and Shikamaru around to protect her while she's vulnerable and "jacked in" to the system.

Ino as a hacker sounds very yummy to me. I'm at a loss to explain why though since I've only seen up through the written test portion of the chuunin exams on TV. There's just something about Ino's attitude the few times I've seen her that just fits hacker for me. Her whole team fits "hacker" in my head.

Iruka is probably in some scrounged up library teaching people Things They Don't Want You To Know. Like the whole concept of human rights and free thought. Or running an orphanage. Or both.

Kakashi I think you already have some plans for based on other posts/comments.

If you are inclined to have Haku and Zabuza in this universe you probably wouldn't have to change much about them. Zabuza has a gang and is out to secure a bigger turf/control some resource/generally be the big boss. Haku is his runner and catspaw and boytoy.

That's all I really have, not having much canon knowledge to work with. Though Gaara is probably addicted to some really nasty drug....

Ooooh. I LIKE that idea for Iruka. I like it a lot. ADOPTED.

As for Haku and Zabuza, I sort of had them in mind when I mentioned the two flesh humans that actually gave Sasuke a run for his money (but he eventually killed them, which doesn't fit the balance of power in the naruto canon even though it fits this different universe.) But I never named them or even described them, so it's certainly not set in stone. I like the idea of Zabuza as a gang leader and Haku as his runner and boytoy. *pondering* Of course they'd have to die at some point... u.u;;

I confess I haven't been reading the cyborg!fic (I'll probably go through and catch up on it sometime, but I am lazy), but:

Ino-hacker = win. Especially if her specialty is hacking into other people's cyborgstuff and taking over their miiiinds. I'm sure she's a sexy hacker too. I also think that Shikamaru and Chouji have to be involved with her; it's pretty much a given for Team 10. Maybe they're technically supposed to be her bodyguards (perhaps in this future hacking is a Dangerous Business and hackers are simultaneously in high demand and not trusted? I dunno), but they tend to help her out on operations more than anyone knows?

I'm not sure about Gai and Lee as paramedics; I just have this sense of them needing to be doing something very physical and demanding--but since you're already working a hospital into the plot for the sake of characters like Tsunade, Sakura, Kabuto, Shizune, etc, it is easier to tie Gai and Lee in with it somehow. Whether they're paramedics or physical therapists (perhaps Lee was originally a patient Gai treated, and they fell for each other in their wonderful platonic way, and now they work together?), I bet they run down the halls a lot. XD

Oooh, I could have Chouji as her bodyguard. Shika is a hacker too, but he deals mostly in small illegal stuff and it's mostly in his spare time. Ino sounds like she's from a small but very competitive programmers firm or something like that.

Being a paramedic could be physical (especially if it's them. XD they'd make even paperwork physical) Running down the halls is a given, isn't it? *snerk* thanks for the mental picture, i'll try to use it. ^____^

Cyborg future

Ino Hacker, oh yes. Working with Shika and Chouji, double yes. Though Chouji needs to be given something more than a bodyguard position. Man needs to work the hardware, perphaps creates personal weaponary. Shika writes programs, Chouji builds it, and Ino runs it, I'm seeing her as a deleted gouvernment project of a 'ghost in the shell' thing. Maybe she can't access her body anymore, and Chouji is either building her a new one with Shika trying to get it online, or they're looking for the original kept in storage somewhere. Seeing a secret lab with a test group of 'ghosts' trolling the net for lawbreakers, the military breaks in, maybe Uchiha units, pulls the plugs and all the ghosts becoming lost in cyberspace. Without physical flesh they fade, until only Ino is left.
Sakura and Tsunade, maybe they secretly run free clinics, or work as high price specialists for rent doing otherwise illegal operations on cyborgs, furries, AIs and so forth. Sakura needs to be a superprotected only child, a bit of a brat who doesn't believe that the underground could be that bad, and that the gouvernment is doing its job just fine and the rules are good. Needs to be slapped in the face with a harsh reality that not everyone gets happy families with good paychecks and houses in nice neighbourhoods. Tsunade was once a member of gouvernment pegged to be the next mayor and clean up the city, but a slur campaign about her gambling and drinking habits took her out, that and the assasination of her lover. Dissapeared to change her identity and become the head medical specialist. Still drinks and gambles to forget her past. Eventually gets recruited by Naruto and her old friend Jiriya who is helping Kakashi-sensei to organise an underground resistance move against the corupt corporations.
Lee and Gai need to be Ambulance drivers, or first aid specialists, the emergency doctors who get sent in first to the fight scene to patch people up until they get back to the hospital, even if Lee and Gai have to carry back their victims/paitents. And secretly the other hospital staff keep hoping they'll get killed on the job by a stray bullet, but they're just so lucky that it never happens.
Hinata, Test tube baby. Hiashi and wife just couldn't produce a child so the corporation stepped in and Hiashi agreed to let them try new genetic manipulation technology, afterall everything worked so well with the Neji clone. But Hinata was a failure on all counts, the technology just wasn't advanced enough. Born a girl instead of a boy, born weak instead of inheriting her father's strength, indecisive, shy, continually sick as a child. She ended up being left in the labs for the most parts alone and ignored until her presence was leaked to the media and suddenly Hiashi had to publically accept her as his daughter, who'd been 'away' studying, then to add fuel, his wife finally fell pregnant, with another girl, but this time talented. The battle is how to get rid of Hinata without creating a huge public storm as she's become a media darling, the lonely, sad, beautiful, fragile, billionaire's daughter. Who's also the country's number one bacherlorette. Kiba (dogfurry, squee! badboy) and Shino (fence {oooo what if he wore something tight and sexy under the big coat...drrrroooooooool} and info hound) need to meet her. Ah the good girl, bad guy romance. Squeeeee! Oh oh, her family deals illegal substances created by their labs, and Shino is being scouted as a dealer. Kiba would be his 'tough'. Hinata has developed a habit with a painnumbing drug as her body has rejection problems (hence her continual illness as a child) of a painful kind and she's desperated to keep it away from her father incase he liquidates her as a fully failed project. Mental image of Kiba holding her painwracked body trying to convince her to get help rather than trying to take care of everything on her own with a drug that's destroying her. Oooooooo

Ino as ghost in the shell-type-thing... Even if I hadn't already mentioned Ino as a corporeal being in one of the fics... sorry, not possible. They don't have the technology to send people into the cyberspace; probably never will. They're directly connected, maybe, but they don't leave their own skull. It would be a neat idea, but it doesn't fit in my universe. You're free to use it if you want to, though. ^^

I know what Tsunade was already, should have said that. Can't tell though, because it's spoilerific. (Kakashi isn't organizing anything, though. XD It's so not his personality to take charge of anything so noble and altruistic like that)

Temari ought to be a scam artist, finds ways of tricking people into giving her their money legally. It's the future, but there are still very stupid people out there who will fall for pyramid scams and the like. She and Kankuro can be in it together, all charismatic and hot and taking advantage of silly people that give out their credit card number over the phone. >_>

And Kiba and Shino should sell pirated cell phones all tricked out with banned technology like police bot radar and stuff! ^^

Hmmm. I think that pins down where our mental images had been diverging, then - my version would be happening after that crash you're talking about, where people still use language like 'the government' and describe things in ways that resemble what we've got today, but actually it's this viscious fuedalistic dogfight going on between 'the megacorps' and 'street people', serfs in all but name, caught in the middle...

Also I'd been thinking a generally higher level of technology, particularly in genetics - I'd interpreted 'furry' as something more like Andrew Swann's Moreaus, people deliberately engineered using the combination of human and animal DNA from the ground up for some particular purpose, most often combat... along with cybertech on par with the stuff Shirow uses in the GitSverse - human-grade AI in a comperable-scale platform, uploadable conciousness, etc. A lot of it, though, is done by implanting specially programmed nanites and having the part grown rather than cutting out what was originally there and dropping something mechanical down in place of it. Of course, nanite programming costs, so you almost never see that kind of technology down at street level... let alone stuff as complete and high-quality as Sakura's.

Speaking of whice, I think that the biggest gap there, now that I've come to my senses and abandoned the idea of Leather Slave Hinata, is whether Sakura comes from before or after the timeskip...

I'd been seeing Tsunade as a retired medical researcher rather than a politician, who'd been discredited and forced into early retirement even despite being the head and major driving force behind the development of the setting's 'modern' cybernetics technology... Sakura's family background is essentially a daughter of corporate middle-management who discovered that, despite any intentions she might otherwise have had in the matter, she'd rather have a dangerous life that was a challenge than a safe, comfortable one as a corporate technician or whatever and started sneaking out in secret. Eventually she tumbled across one of Tsunade's gambling trips and they fell in together, ended up as her protege, and got 'upgraded' on her mentor's tab as a parting gift when she stopped being able to play along to the corporate tune.

'Underground' and 'Aboveground' are almost literal, at least in the city where I'd be setting all this - all the shiny happy corporate types get to live and go to work on a network of roads built several stories above street level - which are kept clean and pretty and so on, of course. Outside of the cities, there's not much - legacy of some of the biowarfare that happened when everything went south. To give an idea of how badly the biosphere got trashed, the two largest consumers of oxygen in the post-Crash world are humans and inorganic chemical reactions. There are still fairly large tracts of 'living' land, but none of them are near any major population centers.

People on the streets mostly live off of vat-grown proteins and such - real food would be a luxury even for lower-level corporate types like Sakura's parents.

The New Non-Judicial Action Guild is a smallish 'niche' company that hires freelance mercenaries to carry out the spying, terrorism and other dirty tricks that the MegaCorps can't admit to because if they did they wouldn't be able to do business with each other. Typically, NNJA members work in three-man teams - sometimes four, counting the Company representative - who's often a former freelancer that performed impressively enough to be put on the payroll.

An Aburame is a small robot, about the size of a cockroach and about as smart as a dumb mouse, which is designed to be capable of linking together with other Aburame from the same production batch to form a gestalt intelligence comperable to a human's. They're basically hexagontal, so they can link together in tesselated sheets, and their upper surface, where their legs aren't can exude a sort of synthetic sensory film similar to the replicant mode of Sasuke's armor. Naturally, Aburame Batch SH-1N-0 is a freelancer for NNJA...

GhostHacker Ino and Hardware Monkey Shikamaru are obligatory, of course, and the standard technique for weaving armoring and myomer fibers around human cells tends to both burn a lot of calories and produce an effectivness that scales directly according to the amount of body mass involved... IE, Chouji's badass!

In retrospect, I think I like your idea for the Hyuuga better than mine - but how does it explain the eyes?

Oh, before I forget? Sasuke has built-in grappeling wires - he can fire them a distance, and they're thin as a razor's edge but still unbelievably strong. Because the wires he used in the Chuunin Exam and the Movie are not only unbelievably cool, but just about the only genuinely unique thing we've seen him do... though now that I think of it, he might have a sort of discus-shaped UAV that can fold up into a packet about two feet long and six inches across...

So, I wandered over here from another page looking for more fic and became totally enrapt in this post – I hope you don’t mind random people posting comments on your journal, but I had an idea that I wanted to share. Someone else mentioned nanotechnology and I couldn’t help but think that it would be a perfect stand in for Gaara's Sand (sorry, do you capitalize that?). It also wouldn’t be that big of a stretch to incorporate it, since we are already experimenting with nanotechology now. He could control it with neural implants of some sort (maybe experimental, it is my understanding that the processes that give him his abilities in canon were also dangerous and experimental, but I haven’t read Naruto for a while, so I’m a little rusty on the details). Anyway, the implants could require him to take strong drugs – maybe to facilitate his control, maybe just as pain inhibitors, after all, any sort of experimental procedure that mucks around with a person’s brain could result in lifelong pain and brain damage.
I don’t know if that’s useful, or if it fits in your world, or if its even wanted, but I thought I’d share – this sounds like an awesome set of stories, and I think I should now probably go back and actually read the ones you've posted!

Hee. Yes, that would be a very neat idea, and I agree that it fits him very well.

Sadly the main characters are Sasuke and Naruto, and Gaara's going to be supporting cast at best, so I don't think I could do this idea justice without shifting a huge part of the focus onto him. It's already hard to keep the storyline from splintering all over the place with just naruto and sasuke's backstories and issues. ^^;;;

you're welcome to write your own, though -- I certainly don't own the cyberpunk genre as applied to Naruto. ^___^ So long as it wouldn't take my story's events, there would be no problem. Thank you for commenting!

If you use the idea of underground fights maybe they run them. Either for dad or to keep themselves amused when he doesn't have jobs for them. Maybe this would bring them into conflict with Zabuza as a rival crime lord, either he's wanting to take over their sport of their sport is encroaching on his territory.

If you want Gaara to meet Naruto the fights probably result in salvageable parts.

I only know of him through fanfic at this point so this is heavily biased on what I've pieced together from them and rants on fanficrants.

Anyone that Naruto would like/respect has to be decent. If he's actually doing more in the sex industry than just writing porn he's probably pretty ethical about it. So smushing together joisbishmyoga and lady_zip's ideas....

He runs a good brothel with happy willing workers who also gather information for him. When he finds out about someone using kids for porn bad things happen to them and the kids end up at Iruka's place. I'd imagine bad things happen to people making snuff films too.

I adore the Itachi/Neji subplot you have going and I'm very interested in the Hyuuga interactions.

The Mafia angle for the Sand Sibs is prefectly brillant, though might I suggest a mental illness as the root cause of the drug abuse or a baaaad reaction to the furry implants resulting in a serious chemical imbalance.
