(teamwork) ficlet thing

Sasuke has known for years that he is done being an avenger. He has known since the first time he felt a flutter of life under his fingers, cradled in his wife's womb.

He is a protector now. This is his role and his function and his reason to go on living. He is a protector, and he will do anything, let anything be done to him, in order to fulfill his mission. Just as he was willing to do anything and have anything done to him in the name of vengeance.

But his dead only smile at him in his memories.

His child -- his child only needs to catch sight of him.

He doesn't understand why the smiles; Sakura is the mother, the one who cares, and Naruto the funny-father, the one who jokes and tells stories and helps forget about skinned knees.

Sasuke is the stern-father, the one who poses the boundaries. The one who watches out and not in.

So the smiles -- the little smiles, the shy smiles, the hesitant smiles -- the sudden wide grins when his child forgets that Sasuke isn't the caring one or the funny one... he doesn't understand why. But he will protect them.

So when Naruto tells him to stop sleeping seated in a corner of the nursery, he tells him to fuck off. And when Sakura tries to puzzle out why all those older bullies take the long way around rather than walking by their street nowadays, he shrugs and changes the subject. And when Tsunade wonders how such an accident could happen -- these council members were experienced and crafty enough to know better, right? And if it was foul play, who would have anything against them? -- he arches an eyebrow and blandly asks she's asking him to investigate.

He already knows what he would find. Nothing. Because he left nothing. And he already knows why. Blackmail. Blackmail using his child.

Not on his life.

Sasuke is not tender, nor does he possess the kind of sense of humor that should ever be used around a child. He's cold, cynical. But it's alright. His child -- their child -- has Sakura and Naruto for that. He serves another purpose.

He isn't the funny one. He isn't the loving one.

So why.

Why.

The child is just enough like Naruto, that Sasuke knows the answer would be, "just because". The child is just enough like Sakura to add, "gifts are to be enjoyed and not questioned," if Sasuke ever, ever thought about asking.

Or maybe he would just receive a puzzled blink, and a shrug, and a smile. And then his child would fall asleep on him again.

Maybe this is answer enough.

;___; ça me donne envie de redessiner papa!Sasuke. :p

Aww. This was so bittersweet and cute! Sasuke as the one that makes the not so nice things in life stay away from his child.

So much love!

It's perfect how Sasuke adapts his role to become The Protecter and yet still retains his bad-ass wangsty image, *snicker* and is yet so adorably confused on why this is, perhaps, the best role. Or why his child loves him so much.

And the image of him scaring away the bullies? Priceless.

[identity profile] complexphoenix.livejournal.com 2006-03-17 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oooo, I love this. Sasuke has wised up, but not in a way that makes everything perfect, and still retains his essential character and the qualities that once made him a fucking idiot. He has not let go of the past so much as rechanneled its effects; the memory of his clan and its demise once made him obsess about getting revenge, now he obsesses about ensuring that nothing like it ever happens again, that his child never knows the pain he did. Or most other kinds of pain, for that matter.

So intent is he on banishing the monsters of the world away from his child that he hopes his child knows so little pain as to not really understand the importance of his role. But child understands. Child knows that there are monsters in the world, and Sasuke is the one who keeps them away.

Hence, the smile. Thank you, father. Thank you for keeping away the monsters.

And, I cried while writing that comment. You win.

I cried reading your comment. You wrote what I felt but could barely put into words.

You and Asuka /get/ Sasuke on a fundemental level.

From the mouths of babes, comes wisdom.

Or rather, in their eyes lies wisdom. Somehow I find it amusing that it's the innocent little child who knows somehow that while Sakura may be Mommy, and Naruto is the laughing funny Daddy, it's the dark and quiet Sasuke who makes the monsters go away.

I know you don't see him this way, but Sasuke has always struck me as being the realist of the group, as well as the one who is honest even - or maybe especially - when the truth is hard to hear. So I can see him as being the sort of parent a kid would turn to when they want answers or solutions, rather than comfort or distraction.

As well as being the sort of parent from whom even a small bit of praise feels like gaining some rare treasure. A bit like his own father in that respect - except that Sasuke manages to communicate that he cares, rather than forcing his child to prove himself/herself in order to get approval. Being like his own father is not entirely bad. Whatever else one might have to say about him, one must recognize that he managed to inspire Sasuke as a child - and who knows, maybe even Itachi. As long as Sasuke still communicates that he cares (and frankly, if he's the one who sleeps in a corner of the nursery, I really doubt that he's ever going to be as 'stern/cold/dispassionate' towards his children as he thinks he's being :-P), that's a good thing.

*smiles wryly* I'd be interested to hear what you think about Sasuke's parents, one of these days - given how much they (or their absence) have shaped Sasuke's life.

Sasuke fluff is good. At least, in-character Sasuke fluff. The character isn't ALL snark, after all. He just saves the really moving moments for important things. ^_^

Yay for Protector!Sasuke! I don't think he realizes quite yet that while it's important that a child have tenderness and fun in order to feel safe, it's also important that they know they're safe and protected. And the way he does it, chasing away anything that could harm or frighten the child, tells the little one that he cares more than words ever could.

*wibbles*

Ah! Protector!Sasuke makes me a happy, happy fangirl.

Only one thing I foound was this: "he arches an eyebrow and blandly asks she's asking him to investigate." Which I think should be this: "he arches an eyebrow and blandly asks if she's asking him to investigate."

And since everyone else has already adressed the noteworthy issues of characterization, family relationships, past trauma, etc. in the ficbit, I shall simply squee over the pretty imagery of daddy Sasuke with his kid sleeping on his lap. Awww. *melts*

This kid will never be afraid of monsters in the closet, that is for sure. Because not even mice would dare nest in that closet with Sasuke around. *cuddles Sasuke - carefully*

Sappy yet very Sasuke. ^^
