yay spamming with random uninteresting naruto-thoughts. (why? because i can. and i'm bored. and i can't write at the moment. and Saro isn't online. WAHHH T_T)

I'm so picky with what I read in the Naruto fandom. People recced me some no doubt great fics -- but I saw the pairings or the summary and backbuttony I went. ~___~;;; I wish I could be the kind of person who enjoys any kind of plot or pairing as long as it's IC and presented in a convincing way (it sure would mean I'd get to read more than the same plot rehashed for the hundredth time), but... well. i'm not. There are things that I just don't read, no matter how well it's presented.



Pairing I actively look for and will read even if the writing's not that great:
-NaruSasuSaku.

And that's it.


Pairing I love but which also gets on my nerves when their issues aren't adressed or they're OOC:

-NaruSasu (Naruto: not a weepy uke, not a moron. Sasuke: not that good at caring for people, not secretly a romantic, not about to decide that his brother matters less than some buttsex and flowers. Also see: rivalry and why it won't magically stop after a bout of "lovemaking", and, if post-timeskip, betrayal issues)
-ItaSasu: hello, incest=not normal, hello, obsession/hate/betrayal issues, not fluffycute. (but ohsohawt/dark/gutwrenching if done right...)


Pairing I can read about and like, if they're written by authors I trust:

-LeeGaara
-NejiHina
-NejiShika

-Sandcesty pairings
-...NaruNeji and NaruGaara, I guess... but it has to be very IC, and treat Sasuke right. If there's even one whiff of bashing, or any kind of "...Sasuke who?", yay back button.
-KakaIru and KakaGai : only when highly recommended to me. Frankly, I don't really care about Kakashi's love life. (also, hatehatehate dickless!uke!iruka and childhoodfriend!iruka and OMGSECRETLYANBU!iruka)


Pairing I like in the background but which I won't bother looking for as main pairing:

-ShikaIno
-ZabuHaku : It's so perfect in canon, I really don't need fanfic to *snrk* fill the holes.

-Any pairing with Tenten (she's so... empty. If we knew more about her, maybe i'd be more interested, but right now...)


Pairing that fill my "eee, pretty crack pairing" needs:

-NejiSasu : eee haughty rivaling genius jerks, eee pretty pretty ukesex.
-NaruSasuNeji: so hard to imagine the dark-and-angsty duo without a Naruto on top. XD
-TemaIno: mrrr bitchy!lesbiansex. See, they would just need Shika to push them at each other, hoping to be left the hell alone -- and bingo. (though they'd probably team up on him XD haha, as if he would protest)


Pairings I don't read:
(not begrudging your right to read them and like the dynamics -- but I don't like the dynamics, or I prefer them with someone else)

-SasuSaku.
-NaruSaku.

I don't read Sakura with only one of her boys (whereas I can read the boys together) because :

1) she loves Sasuke, I can't see her not loving Sasuke, which means that I can't see her realistically falling out of love with Sasuke and in love with Naruto, even if, post-timeskip, their relationship is a lot closer and kinda flirty. (even if the fic manages to convincingly develop her changing feelings, I'm a Sasuke fan first and foremost. I hate hate hate fics where she "sees the light" and "dumps" him to shack up with Naruto -- in these fics, it's usually a "well he got what he deserved/he didn't deserve them anyway" thing and I can't stand that. even when it's not, I hate seeing him left behind -- and fics where she moves on after his death are WORSE)

2) Sasuke doesn't really notice her. He will protect her, but he doesn't understand her, and his relationship (rivalry/friendship of equals) with Naruto matters a lot more to him than his relationship with Sakura (adoration from someone weaker than him) She's important to him, but (romantically or not) Naruto's a lot more important -- almost as important as Itachi. Any romantic relationship he would have with her or anyone would take a backseat to these two dynamics.

-NaruHina. (cute. Like puppies. Ergo, booooring. Also, no Sasuke. Major turn off, that.)

-random MaleGenin/Sakura: too often Sakura-Sue, also usually Naruto and Sasuke are background characters.

-Kakashi/any of his students -- wait, any teacher / any student. (yes, sera, that includes Yondy/Kakashi) I can read Teacher/Student in Harry Potter (snarry anyone?) but in Naruto, I just can't stand the thought. It's just -- no. Aside from the ethics, they first saw their brats when they were twelve. Whne you're an adult, even if they grow up pretty, you don't consider someone you met at twelve attractive unless you're a pedophile. You just don't. And it bothers me here for reasons I can't entirely explain,but which also include teacher/student ethics.

-Itachi/anyone but Kisame or his brother -- and even so, if it's anything but mindfucky and totally messed up and angsty as hell and definitely not a happy-ending kind of story, it's the back button.

-SasuHina: ... I already ranted about that, I think. Just -- blech. where the hell did it come from?

-Gaara/Sakura, Ino, Tenten... anyone not Naruto or Lee or his sibling: Hello, Gaara is a borderline sociopath, and definitely homicidal. he doesn't even notice Sakura as anyone but someone who would have died for Sasuke (okay, might notice her there)... and someone who makes him think of Yashamaru. oops, no brownie points there. Gaara only reacts positively to very few people (the rest of the world is in his "ignore until they make themselves enough of a nuisance to bother killing them" folder), and besides he needs to seriously work at his crazies before he can consider "liking" someone. Emotionally speaking, he's about FIVE YEAR OLD -- a severely abused five-year-old -- and he doesn't understand caring. Whenever I see a "kunoichi-sue heals Gaara's soul/teaches Gaara what Love is", I weep. We're looking at years of therapy here, not at moonlit promises. Gaara+romance=nooooes.

-really, REALLY random pairings for the hell of it, like (haha sorry Kirin XD) Kisame/Hinata, or Kabuto/Ino or stuff like that : eh. If they don't even meet in canon, I really can't be bothered. (exception: that one NejiKankuro I recced a while back -- but then it was held up by the plot and the settings, not only by the character interaction. It was a "never would have happened if the situation were different" thing, not a OTP thing.)





Genres I don't read:

-Naruto was raised by Kakashi/Jiraiya/Iruka/an OC and now he's TOTALY DIFRENT YEY. I understand the urge to make Naruto's past less awful, but without his past and his struggles to be acknowledged and his refusal to be swallowed by his OMGangst, he's... not Naruto anymore. Thus, boring. Same goes for "Itachi didn't go on his rampage" and "it wasn't Itachi who killed the Uchihas" fics -- very few of them fully understand and use the changes it would mean for the village structure, and for Sasuke's evolution.
-- NARUTO IZ SECRETLY SMARTER THN SHIKA N UBERSKILLED N ALL DEEP N STUFF N NOONE CAN UNDRESTAND HIS PAIN = ... wtf. Who's that pod person? I want canon!Naruto back!

-Next Generation stories, Self Inserts, Original characters as a focus (one exception: The Way of the Apartment Manager. now that's an OC done right. read it. :p)

-School fics: one of the major interests of Naruto for me is the world in which it takes place -- chakra, enemy countries, village politics, seals, ANBU and everything. You take that away, it becomes very boring and generic.

-Crossovers that make no fucking sense. XP

-Fics that sound more like "Friends" than like life in a ninja village -- where the biggest problem is who dates who, where EVERYONE ends up paired off at the end even if it makes no sense, and where no one ever spilled a drop of blood in their life.

(not counting, of course, fics containing blatant OOC, character bashing and caricaturing characters, horrible grammar and spelling skills, ANs in the middle of the story, and the like, which are just bad writing no matter the genre. :p)

This little issue has killed my delight in more than one gen or non-NaruSasu fic. The Naruto focused ones ignore Sasuke completely (or have Naruto dismiss him as "that bastard" and think on him not at all), and the Sasuke focused ones ignore Naruto (or dismiss him as "that idiot").

Why do people do this? I mean, even if they aren't bumping the uglies, they're both really, really connected to each other. Sasuke is the one person Naruto wants most to acknowledge him, for gods sake. Are they even reading the same series?

Would Sakura pick Naruto over Sasuke? To start with, no - at first because she was, frankly, a shallow little twit, and later because she was genuinely devoted to Sasuke. (Which, personally, I don't get at all, but that doesn't make it any less true.)

Post-timeskip? Depends. (Mostly because we have no data on this interaction yet.) If he was willing to treat her like a fellow human being, she'd probably be willing to forgive him almost anything. (Which, incidentally, I think there's an excellent chance of him doing - I mean, c'mon, even without Chiyo-baa's role, Sasori - a full member of the Akatsuki - was maybe -one- mistake away from getting swatted like a bug.

One of the dominating elements of Sasuke's personality is the amount of respect he has for a strong person... So, is he going to just blow off someone who can do that?

I doubt it. He's obsessed, but that doesn't mean he's a fucking idiot.

And if he isn't? If he's been too focused, or too influenced by Snake Face?

I honestly think she'd snap him in half. Because if he's changed that little, if he's still that blind and immature, then there's no way he'll be willing to give her the credit she deserves - and all she needs is one shot.

She's done a lot of growing up in the three years we didn't see - and I can't see the person she seems to've become being weak enough to let herself betray her principles - no matter how much it hurts.

I'd say she'd put Sasuke before Naruto, and either before Konoha, yeah - but her conscience would come first of all.

Loving someone isn't the same as letting them dominate your life. I think she'd wait as long as there was a hope - but when that faded, for whatever reason, Naruto's the only choice I can imagine her making. Not quickly, and definitely not easily, but, eventually, as sure as a sunrise.

The more you strip away from Naruto and Sasuke, the more they start to look alike. Same drive, same loneliness, same recklessness.

Consider what Sakura's life pre-Ino, then compare that description to Inner Sakura.

The Densetsu no Sannin were -three-. They were not Orochimaru the Genius and Jiraiya the Sneak and 'that medic chick.' Kishimoto might've been able to drive the parallels between them and Team 7 home harder by using a sledgehammer, but it'd be a near thing.

You're right in saying that Sasuke's too blind^H^H^H^H^H -obsessed- to notice someone who doesn't walk up, clock him upside the head and -make- him do so.

But you're underestimating Sakura, I think. Badly.

But i'm talking about FICS I'd read, and since the timeskip is recent, post-timeskip!sakura in fics is also recent, and thus quite rare. And we haven't seen enough yet of her and her relationship with Naruto -- and we haven't seen sasuke at all -- so I don't want to read post-timeskip SasuSaku fics because they're mostly guessing at the dynamic between them. It's educated guesses, but still guesses. I don't want guesses, I want canon.

Besides, i was a narusasu fan before I went into team7 love. If I didn't like and respect her character, would I write her in with my favorite couple? no. I like the way she interacts with them both. That doesn't mean I want to see her be a wedge between them, instead of a bridge.

I could go through your post in more detail, but I just read an angsty love triangle that's making me cry my eyes out, and it just happens to be Sakura loves Sasuke who uses her because he can't have Naruto, and it rang way too close to the way I see things could happen, so I'm not anymore coherent than you are. Depends if the self-insert is a central character. If he's there to put them together or anything that's mary-sue-ish in nature, no way in hell. If the self-insert is done realistically (ie doesn't have OMGsuperpowers, his presence is explained believably, and he's given a good reason to hang out with the canon characters, why not)

*tips hand side to side* I -hope- he's not one of those awful people, and I've been trying to avoid it, but it's kind of hard to tell when you're the one writing it, y'know? After all, of -course- I'm going to think that my views of this are what's IC...

So there's that desire for avoidance on the one hand and there's the fact that I made room by giving Kakashi a different team a year earlier than in canon, then had to drop him in the hole on the other.

And, y'know, a Kakashi-shaped hole is going to be pretty badass even without the ten, fifteen years worth of foreknowledge and preparation, so... ^_^;

At this point, I guess all I can flat-out -promise- is that you're dealing with a 'character' who, at one point, I was planning to kill off at the end of the Wave Country arc; who spends something like three-quarters of my planned plotline appearing maybe once a chapter, if that; and who, as of only chapter three, has already fucked up by the numbers at least once.

I don't go looking for Naruto fic anymore because the vast majority is badbadbadbadmisogynistic&bad.

I have about zero interest in male characters as a general rule unless we're really, honestly & truly dealing with their fascinatingly fucked up psyches, or there's a female character running around to interest me with pretty. NaruSasu holds nothing of interest because most of the authors have gleefully tossed Sakura off a cliff and forgotten she exists, made her so she's magically a-ok with her boys running off to have lives without her, or otherwised demolished her character. This irritates me. Sakura is a huge focus for Naruto. HUGE. He adores her to the point that it is frequently painful to watch because for the longest time she doesn't realize he's there. He's not going to just up and forget about her because of yay buttsex. He wants Sasuke to recognize him and validate him, but he loves Sakura. Just loves her no matter what. Sort of like Sakura loves Sasuke no matter what. And Sasuke is a jerk. To both of them. meh. I can see Sasuke forgetting about them both because nothing is as important to him as his own wangsting, but I can't see Naruto forgetting or blowing off Sakura, and I can't see Sakura forgetting or blowing off Sasuke. It's a messy, messy dynamic. Post time skip I can see Sakura holding one helluva mean grudge against Sasuke for a lot of reasons, but she'll still love him. and no matter what, Naruto will always love her.

One thing that I have a huge problem with when it comes to Naruto fandom is fanficcers' inability to realize that simply because you don't like the person, or they've pissed you off and betrayed you doesn't mean you stop loving them. You love them even though you'd happily strangle them. It's what makes Naruto so fascinating to me, the mixed up muddled emotions and relationships. But most of Naruto fandom is all NaruSasu buttsex yay. -_- Geh.

No one in Naruto forgets anything ever except maybe Naruto, but not really. He just represses, but the memories are still there and still fuck him up. However, a lot of fanfiction in Naruto (and other places, I always complain about this) waves teh majik wand of yaoi and things are all happyshineysparklesyay that makes me want to stab people.

I also want InoTemari anger sex but have been denied so I'm bitter.

Some of my stuff might strike your fancy but I'd feel silly if I recommended it and you ended up not liking it.

For example I have one series that includes some not in any way fluffy/cute/etc. Ita/Sasu but to quote my beta, "It's disturbing as hell. Good, but disturbing." Meh, it's probably isn't nearly as disturbing as it should be either. . .
