Duo loves Relena because she is so serious about everything, and all those years of training to control her face and always look proper and restrained and to calmly and decisively debate just about anyone into the ground without missing a beat. Therefore when he manages to make her laugh it means he has successfully taken her by surprise, and then her control explodes into unfeminine snorts and bright teeth and breathless, failing attempts to stop, and she'll go "oh, Duo! that was so BAD!" even as she curls up holding her stomach, and she'll be red-faced the way her publicists would howl to see. She's not actually twenty going on fifty-five, and she's not proper all the way through, and she is so real then, nothing like the poised ideal on her shining pedestal.

When she's like that -- a woman, flesh and blood and life and uncalculating spontaneity and the deeply-buried, still-fighting ability to get his dirty jokes and to dish them back with interest -- he gets to feel like he can hold her in his arms.

The rest of the time not so much, considering how far under her skin the polished marble goes, which breaks his heart, but he knew it would be that way going in.

Dave doesn't love Karkat. (He doesn't hate him either, in that fucked up, oh so special troll way; sorry babe, a momentary annoyance yes, the loathing of my life nope.) Though he's entertaining to mess with, Dave barely likes Karkat, and even that much he works not to show.

The fact is, Karkat is loud and emotionally wide open, a raw wound, unhidden need.

The wound is the same shape and depth as Dave's, only he has the good sense to fucking hide it so no one knows exactly where to take potshots. All their interaction needs to be coated in doses of irony and cool, so no real contact can be established; who knows, they might fuse together at the raw bits like post-birth Siamese twins.

The need is so obvious, the open request, please love me, please let me be important to you, please let me protect you, I can be strong, I can be useful, I can, I can, just allow me to prove it to you, I will care about everything, everyone, I will care until I've bled myself dry and then a little more.

It's like looking at a mirror that reflects all the things he can't stomach to look at in himself.

He wishes he had half the emotional bravery Karkat has.

(Maybe then he'd stop doing his best to avoid getting attached.)

Why Azula loves appreciates Ty Lee:

-She is nice to look at, all bright colors and aesthetically pleasing dances, it's like having an ornamental paradise nightingale that will also cuddle.

-She knows Azula is using her, and she is perfectly alright with that, happy being a weapon in her hand.

-She fears Azula just enough to make her safe to get attached to.

John and Karkat?

warning i am sleepy and brainfloppy, this is not the smartest argument. XD

John loves Karkat because:

-he's hilarious. He has an impressively extended gross vocabulary, it's kind of amazing, and the way he flails and explodes at every little thing is really funny, it's so over the top and possibly even Karkat knows it -- but at the same time when it's really serious, well, he takes it dead seriously.

-He cares a ton. Possibly several tons. Even if he disguises it with insults he's always the first to ask if you've gotten hurt or if the argument with some other person went that badly and if you want to talk about it and figure out how to fix it.

-He might bitch and rant about it some but he never tries to push you into anything you're not 100% comfortable with, or sulk because he didn't get his way.

-When he's all flustered and trying not to swoon he is the very cutest.

Also it makes him way less intimidating in a boy-on-boy way to know that you can just whisper silly endearments in his ear and the ferocious clawed-fanged-ball-of-muscles troll pinning you to the couch will just melt. Socute. Why socute. Boys should stop being cute.

Oh well. So long as it's only Karkat. :B

Suigetsu loves Sasuke... let's call it love, though it's a bit dark to be all that fluff-sugary like what people say it ought to be.

He doesn't love Sasuke because Sasuke rescued him. Suigetsu would have saved himself at some point, and he doesn't do gratitude much.

He enjoys Sasuke because he's so interesting. Brooding and quiet, which makes Suigetsu want to prod until he reacts, and hella dangerous when roused, which makes him a challenge, which makes Suigetsu's pants go nicely tight at the crotch. He's quick like a viper and vicious in a fight, which Suigetsu approves of. And he's powerful enough to make him worth measuring himself against, which is essential.

He also cares about that strange ideal of team, no matter that he tells himself he doesn't, and Suigetsu mocks him for it but secretly it makes him feel there's a little soft spot in himself just for Sasuke, just for knowing he might bitch and glare but he still think Suigetsu is worth partnering with, keeping around no matter what, that (when sasuke doesn't have his head so far up his ass he turns into a moebius strip) he has a place with Sasuke.

Also he has the tightest little ass ever, and when he stomps around, wowza.

In other news, don't sweat which fandom you're writing for: I came for Naruto OT3 first, and I haven't regretted the time you've spent on other fandoms. As long as you don't say we have to give up on ever getting an ending, readers should wait with patience.

Vriska hates Karkat for one thing and one thing only.

"Oh Vriska, here is a list of everything you do wrong (insert a list of everything Vriska does, at all, everything she is) and why no one can stomach you." The worst thing is he is so detached about it -- he bitches and moans and rants but from him it doesn't even count as being less than perfectly neutral, he doesn't even really care, not in any personal way. He just analyzes her, dissects her emotions into neat little parts to write papers about, it's like he's watching a movie and predicting its end and he will not stop being right.

It's only one thing, but it encapsulates pretty much everything he is.

She will sink her claws inside him until she can drag out to the light all the dark patches of him and throw them in his face, until she wins he hates her back.

Terezi pities Dave's secret awkwardness and need for approval that he plasters over with overblown pretend-uncaring coolness and his guilt and pain over his lusus' death. She enjoys his sense of humor and his willingness to roll with her most out of left field ideas. She appreciates his respect of her, even as he wraps it in a dozen layers of "i'm just pretending!" she knows it's real.

(BT!Dave mostly thought "hey we're not related at ALL and you're pretty cute and we have a lot of fun together you roll with my jokes and laugh at them a lot and ou're spunky i like spunky oh hey boobs". they could have dated longer if they wer eliving in different houses like normal teens, but the group is fairly claustrophobic and they all live together and there was no getting away from each other for a while, so this early in the relationship it just ... hrrm. also their lives are fairly stressful, and dave is pessimistic and jade is passionate so once they started snapping at each other it escalated real fast.)

I think Relena and Quatre wouldn't start out as a love match, but as companions/allies who share the same intense love of peace and ideologies, and out of that shared love and goal they'd develop a companionnable thing that would eventually become a tranquil, comfortable, trusting, mostly intellectual-with-cuddles kind of love. So basically loving each other would be a result/side effect of loving and working toward the same things together. It'd work pretty well for them, since the greatest passion of their lives would be politics.
