Duo loves Relena because she is so serious about everything, and all those years of training to control her face and always look proper and restrained and to calmly and decisively debate just about anyone into the ground without missing a beat. Therefore when he manages to make her laugh it means he has successfully taken her by surprise, and then her control explodes into unfeminine snorts and bright teeth and breathless, failing attempts to stop, and she'll go "oh, Duo! that was so BAD!" even as she curls up holding her stomach, and she'll be red-faced the way her publicists would howl to see. She's not actually twenty going on fifty-five, and she's not proper all the way through, and she is so real then, nothing like the poised ideal on her shining pedestal.

When she's like that -- a woman, flesh and blood and life and uncalculating spontaneity and the deeply-buried, still-fighting ability to get his dirty jokes and to dish them back with interest -- he gets to feel like he can hold her in his arms.

The rest of the time not so much, considering how far under her skin the polished marble goes, which breaks his heart, but he knew it would be that way going in.

Why Azula loves appreciates Ty Lee:

-She is nice to look at, all bright colors and aesthetically pleasing dances, it's like having an ornamental paradise nightingale that will also cuddle.

-She knows Azula is using her, and she is perfectly alright with that, happy being a weapon in her hand.

-She fears Azula just enough to make her safe to get attached to.

Dave doesn't love Karkat. (He doesn't hate him either, in that fucked up, oh so special troll way; sorry babe, a momentary annoyance yes, the loathing of my life nope.) Though he's entertaining to mess with, Dave barely likes Karkat, and even that much he works not to show.

The fact is, Karkat is loud and emotionally wide open, a raw wound, unhidden need.

The wound is the same shape and depth as Dave's, only he has the good sense to fucking hide it so no one knows exactly where to take potshots. All their interaction needs to be coated in doses of irony and cool, so no real contact can be established; who knows, they might fuse together at the raw bits like post-birth Siamese twins.

The need is so obvious, the open request, please love me, please let me be important to you, please let me protect you, I can be strong, I can be useful, I can, I can, just allow me to prove it to you, I will care about everything, everyone, I will care until I've bled myself dry and then a little more.

It's like looking at a mirror that reflects all the things he can't stomach to look at in himself.

He wishes he had half the emotional bravery Karkat has.

(Maybe then he'd stop doing his best to avoid getting attached.)

John loves Karkat because:

-he's hilarious. He has an impressively extended gross vocabulary, it's kind of amazing, and the way he flails and explodes at every little thing is really funny, it's so over the top and possibly even Karkat knows it -- but at the same time when it's really serious, well, he takes it dead seriously.

-He cares a ton. Possibly several tons. Even if he disguises it with insults he's always the first to ask if you've gotten hurt or if the argument with some other person went that badly and if you want to talk about it and figure out how to fix it.

-He might bitch and rant about it some but he never tries to push you into anything you're not 100% comfortable with, or sulk because he didn't get his way.

-When he's all flustered and trying not to swoon he is the very cutest.

Also it makes him way less intimidating in a boy-on-boy way to know that you can just whisper silly endearments in his ear and the ferocious clawed-fanged-ball-of-muscles troll pinning you to the couch will just melt. Socute. Why socute. Boys should stop being cute.

Oh well. So long as it's only Karkat. :B

In other news, don't sweat which fandom you're writing for: I came for Naruto OT3 first, and I haven't regretted the time you've spent on other fandoms. As long as you don't say we have to give up on ever getting an ending, readers should wait with patience.
