GW: Lone Wolf and Pilot
--

The pack sense was almost silent to him. He'd been getting used to intermittent whispers, but apart from his wolf's location and the swing of his tail, the gravel under his paw pads, there was nothing.

He fell into step with Segura and Trowa without a word. Heero walked right beside him; might as well have been at the other end of the Earth Sphere.

Several times he thought Segura was going to speak; but the trainees were taking their time dispersing, and then they turned a corner toward the admin building and it was a full agent, waving at the man. "Hey, Mateo, do you know why -- oh."

Her brother trotted up to Mary to sniff noses, and she didn't growl or look anything worse than neutral. Killer, keeping his distances from the group, kept throwing them sidelong looks and then turning pointedly away, making sure Duo could see him do it. It was -- shit. Like he wasn't feeling guilty enough.

"You new with Preventer?" the woman agent was asking Heero, holding out her hand to shake. Heero really was on his best infiltration behavior, Duo couldn't help thinking, because he took it.

"Signed on this morning," Heero replied with his voice set on neutral, which had the unfortunate effect of making it all quiet and mildly intimate. Or at least something that could be construed as intimate if they didn't know the guy's voice was just naturally buzzy.

Trowa snorted quietly, sneaked him a glance. Duo glowered at him. What?

Absolutely nothing.

What, it's true!

Duo could tell Heero had no clue what the hell the woman even wanted with him. Her wolf was bowing to Mary, but Duo wasn't sure Mary played any more often than her brother did.

And Killer was staring at them like he was thinking of wading in. Duo sent him a forceful no! and made the hand signal for "down" behind his back, the flat of his hand moving like a knife.

Segura coughed, cut in. "Sorry, Lauren, the boss is waiting for us." (So she was. Urgh.)

Bazooka nudged the male wolf away from Mary and they herded the lot of them away. Duo forbade himself from looking back to check whether Killer was moving anywhere close to that other wolf. He had better not be if he knew what was good for him.

Duo really fucking hated being this angry at his own brother.

"Maxwell," Segura said, quietly, and nodded at him to slow down; Trowa obligingly passed him and Heero followed with a quick assessing glance, affording them a pretense of privacy that Duo didn't believe one second, between the pack sense and the acuity of Coyote's ears.

"Yeah?"

The guy sighed, staring at him. "Correcting him was the right thing to do. Here and earlier both."

Duo twitched. Great, lesson from his wise elders time. "I wasn't going to let him attack someone again," he replied, and stuck his hands in his pockets. It compromised his fight readiness, but it hid his clenched fists; a fair fucking trade right now.

"It doesn't hurt him in the long term to be reminded you're in charge. Wolves feel more secure when they have a clear leader--"

Oh, not this tired old saw. He didn't mouth the rest of it with Segura, but it was an effort.

"--and if you don't lead he will."

"Are you saying his attitude problems are because I--"

The only reason he didn't punch Segura right in the throat was that his hands were stuck in his pockets and took half a second to yank free, and by then he'd realized, heart hammering, that the man wasn't trying to break his neck -- that the hand closed on the back of Duo's neck had only given him a shake.

It wasn't even closed that tight. He could get free no problem. Killer, no, he said, unable to make himself turn around and check on his brother.

Dave doesn't see the girls relinquishing the hot tub anytime soon, though, and Kankri seems thoroughly distracted by it as well in a way that means he's not even protesting it any longer. Nah, they're probably staying in here until someone drags them out.

Splash! Dave turns to look for Karkat, doesn't find him above water, tenses ready to leap; Karkat bounds up, breaks the surface with vigorous splashing, grabbing for the edge. Dave would have water up to mid-chest where he is.

"You okay?" he calls out.

Karkat isn't coughing, at least. He cranes his neck to look at Dave, formerly fluffy bangs glued to his forehead, his cheeks. His horns are visible almost all the way, and so are his porcupine quills.

"I'm fine. Just, yeah, what I figured, I know how to swim with a body like yours, which means with a body like mine I swim like a brick."

He cautiously lets go with one hand to illustrate, and, shit, yeah, there he goes, sinking again. When he starts kicking with his feet he resurfaces, but it's kind of frantic.

"Uh. You want a floaty thing, bro?" He pulls his feet out of the water, gets up cautiously. He's a bit tipsy, but it's not too bad. "I'll go look."

"Don't be stupid, I'll poke it full of holes in ten seconds."

"Nah, I think she has, like, foam boards."

Karkat stares at him for a second, and looks down pointedly at his plastron. "I don't think foam will cut it."

"How much do you even weigh anyway?"

Karkat spears him with a "how the fuck do you figure I should know" look, and starts dragging himself along the edge of the pool hand over hand. Dave isn't sure he likes him going toward the deeper end; he ambles around to join him. Might as well keep close, in case of... things. Yeah.

"How's the wing doing?" he asks, more quietly, once he's away from the hot tub and its load of broads.

Karkat flaps it cautiously, splattering Dave's rolled-up pants leg up to the hip. He lets himself sink to the chin, moves it slowly in the water; the skin bells out like sails.

"I'll be sore, but so far it's fine. The water keeps me moving too slow to break it again."

Dave sinks into a crouch. "Yeah, that's what you think, but be careful anyway, okay?"

Karkat glowers up at him. There are water drops in his eyelashes, they're glued together in thick clumps like he's put on makeup.

He's busy enough watching his eyes that he doesn't notice the clawed hand reaching for his knee until it's already catching the rolled-up cloth and tugging him forward.

"Phone!" he yelps, and Karkat, eyes gone just as wide as his, presses his hand flat against Dave's chest to steady him. Dave teeters briefly and then falls on his ass on the tiles. His heel skips and lands in the water but at least it was wet already.

"Your phone or my phone?" Karkat asks, pulling himself up and flopping belly-down on the pool's edge. Dave glares. Karkat smirks, and puts a hand down his pocket to fish it out. "Just kidding, the property damage order still applies."

He stretches past Dave's lap to puts the phone and his wallet as far from the water as he can, and then Dave has seen it coming and decided he didn't care, so he doesn't fight when his demon yanks him into the water by the thighs.

"You're sooo mad cute without the shades, wow. Approved to the max! Whaddya say, Karkat? Should we steal them off him?"

You stare at him; he's watching the scene with the vacuum hose in hand and an unreadable expression on his face. No, it's okay, Karkat doesn't play along with pranks, he is prank-impaired--

"You say that like I intended to give them back in the first place."

Roxy snickers and waggles her eyebrows at him. Karkat tugs the shades down his nose a bit and gives her a smug quirk of his eyebrow, mouth a perfect straight line. That little asshole.

"If you're not helping could you just move on to the kitchen or something," you say while trying not to sound disgruntled. "Karkat keeps bitching me out when I get in his way, so having two people to work around is hardly gonna make him happier."

Roxy makes a sad face, shoulders slumping.

"Nah, contrary to him I know you can dodge out of the way when needed, do whatever you want."

You stare at Karkat. He stares back, eyebrows furrowed. He's still wearing your shades; you think he's confused but you're not sure. "What?"

"Nothing," you say, and turn back to wiping down the table. Bluh. How could he not figure out the being alone together thing?

Maybe he didn't feel like being alone with you.

Bluh.

TT: Hello, Byrd. I won't disturb you for long, I am presently attempting to locate my pseudo-sister, and she is uncharacteristically and infuriatingly not online.

TT: No, quite the contrary actually. Could you inquire what she plans on doing with her afternoon?

You pause for a minute to wipe some more tabletop, before Karkat scolds you, and drag the crabtop along to the other end of the table. Roxy is busying herself with a broom and the shit under some pieces of furniture.

yayyyy! karkat got his phone hehehe <3 but also awwww it feels like karkat is becoming a little bit more physically active towards dave?? like before it didnt feel like they touched as much except for feedings/danger, and i know this is just teasing and playing, but it's much more relaxed and friendly than other times.

on the crash standing snippet, oh no poor roxy!!! unexpected cockblocker for all her "kids". maybe it's an accident, but it's probably on purpose hahaha, and aw, karkat being sympathetic to her hehehe and of course dave thinks karkat wanting her to stick around has to do with him(and not wanting to be with him), pffff.

good luck working on them!! :D

(i didnt comment on the gundam wing fic because i am not in that fandom, but good luck on it too!!)
