Detective Conan/Magic Kaito babble!

Summary and characters thinger so people who don't want to read all 650+ chapters of the conan manga but still want to poke at the fic can still follow along a bit. I did this for GW and FF7 before and I have no clue how helpful it was but at least it was funny to type.

note, this is not supposed to be comprehensive and I only JUST got into this fandom -- I used to read the Conan manga when I was a teenager so I have a good grasp of the basics but as for the details, they kind of date from several centuries ago. >__>;;

So. The story.

Magic Kaito is the older manga, and it fizzed out after four volumes but Gosho Aoyama liked the characters so they became recurring characters in the Detective Conan sprawling monster of a storyline. The tone is somewhat different -- MK is kinda goofy and silly, DC deals with, well, a 16 year old boy in a 6 year old body (so... still kinda goofy) dealing with murder after gruesome murder. (so... a little less goofy. XD)

Magic Kaito is about the adventures of Kuroba Kaito (see icon), a teenager fan of magic tricks (make doves disappear in a hat, guessing cards, that sort of things). His father, Kuroba Toichi, was a famous scene magician, and died onstage when he was eight year old, in a freak accident.

Only then he discovers by accidentally stumbling into his SECRET LAIR that during his free time his father was moonlighting as the Kaitou Kid, a famous jewel thief. A gentleman thief, if you please! Complete with white costume, cape and top hat. Oh, and can't forget the monocle. (kaitou = phantom thief.) He would send a calling card, say "I'll be stealing soandso thanks" and then magic-trick the gem away.

When the Kaitou Kid supposedly resurfaces, Kaito is all "yeah fuck you no, Kaitou Kid = my dad, my dad = ded, ergo you're an impostor" and so he dons the costume and goes out. Turns out it was a friend of the family/manservant type, trying to draw out the... evil organization that did kill Toichi. They wanted him to steal the Pandora Gem for them, because it's said to "cry tears of immortality", and when he wouldn't, they killed him.

Of course that means Kaito has to take on the mantle of Kid the gentleman thief and start his own series of highly publicized jewel heists, looking for the gem. Really, all he wants is to find his father's killers, he gives back the jewels once he's made sure they weren't the one he was looking for, so as far as thieves go he's fairly benign -- if utterly *impossible*.

Because Kaito, frankly speaking, is a brat, and while he's doing it to find his father's killer first, he really does love the attention.

He just happens to be a brat skilled at sleight of hand, and in possession of a cape that transforms into a hang-glider, and pink sleeping gas, and a gun that shoots playing cards, and and and. well. He likes his weird James Bond tricks and his optical effects. XD (also he's a total flirt. Oh Kaito. ♥)

So by day Kaito goes to school, gets chased around by his childhood friend/Tsundere love interest Nakamori Aoko, and by night Kid puts on the cape and gets chased around by inspector Nakamori Ginzo, who just so happens to be Aoko's dad. A-w-k-w-a-r-d. Doesn't help that Aoko hates Kid for repeatedly making her father look ridiculous and never being home because he's too busy hunting Kid down.

Other classmates are Hakuba Saguru, whose father is a Japanese chief of police, grandfather owns a pharmaceutical company, and whose mother is British, and who happens to be a (prissy and quite arrogant) teenage detective. Hakuba knows Kaito is Kid but he can't prove it! So frustrating. (but he also doesn't want him dead, so this one time when there's shit going down he sends him a warning. N'aw.)

Hakuba Saguru shows up a couple of times in Detective Conan, but I'll mention those later.

As for classmates, there's also Akako, who is a ... witch, yes, really, and who has the power to make all men fall in love with her, but Kid doesn't, so when Kaito doesn't either she knows Kaito is Kid. Logical! (hey, this is an older, goofier manga. I'm pretty sure magic doesn't exist in DC, unless we count Conan's incredible bad luck re: finding murders wherever he goes, so I have no clue if she still has the same background in DC or even exists in the context of that manga at all. Far as I know she hasn't shown up in DC yet?)

Also at some point there's an evil cyborg double.

Also Kaito is deathly afraid of fish.

Anyway that's it for Magic Kaito.

Detective Conan is the story of Kudo Shin'ichi, a famous teenage detective, who runs afoul of an evil organization on accident (fan supposition is that it's the same that offed Kaito's dad, but no Word of God on that yet) and is given a drug that should kill him, except it shrinks him to a six year old instead. He tells his friends and his police buddies that his older self is gone on some long top secret investigation, and has to pretend that he's a real kid because the evil organization would think nothing of killing a shit-ton of innocent people if they learned he wasn't, because they're more or less infiltrated EVERYWHERE, and if they knew he survived apparently it would get real bad.

(personally I think he could totally have told at least Ran, his childhood friend/love interest, and also the evil organization would start to wonder why the cops are persuaded that Shinichi is safely undercover when they know for sure they killed him and he should be classified missing person instead... but nevermind, that's the premises.)

He names himself Edogawa Conan, after a japanese mystery writer and arthur conan doyle, and pretends to be his own cousin. From here on, he keeps stumbling onto and solving crimes, except he ends up with a trio of truly-six-year-old kids following him around to "help" (with more or less success) and has developed the habit of drugging Ran's somewhat hapless father (a private detective) so he can imitate his voice and pretend the guy is the one solving all the crimes.

So. Characters!

-Kudo Shinichi/Edogawa Conan. Somewhat snarky detective who never seems to realize he's now six year old when it's about running after assassins -- then again, go and find that video of the black bear getting tree'd by a cat and, sometimes it happens just like that. XD He was extremely arrogant and self confident and look-at-me as Shinichi but when he was shrunk he had to get into the habit of sharing the limelight and pretending to be a bright but childish and only accidentally right kid, which grates but hey, not much of a choice here.

An old, inventor-type friend of the family provided him with shoes that kick REAL HARD, a solar-powered skateboard, and a watch that shoots sleeping darts, also a bowtie (A FRIGGIN BOWTIE) that can change his voice so he can imitate people, but he's still six friggin year old. A couple of temporary cures for his age have been found but alas they never seem to stick.

-Mouri Ran: childhood friend who loevs Shinichi and shall wait for him until the end of time~ ... Also incidentally a karate champion, who sees nothing wrong with jumping from second story windows, kneeing her way through closed windows, knocking out assassins trying to kidnap her even though they're driving at the time because crashing has got to be better than going along with them, etcetera. Instinctively she seems to suspect Conan of being Shinichi, but every time she starts getting too suspicious something will happen to "prove" that's not possible and she'll rationalize her instincts away.

-Mouri Kogoro, an ex cop become private detective, also nicknamed Sleeping Kogoro due to Conan's habit of darting him and then imitating his voice to solve crimes where people wouldn't listen to a kid. Kogoro seems to accept this, weirdly enough. Kogoro is a drunk and smokes a lot, and fanboys a young star pretty hardcore, but he can also get pretty badass when he has to save people and he used to be a good cop. Since his separation with Ran's mom (highly successful lawyer!) things haven't been going as well. (note, ten years later and they're still *not divorced*. Oh, so that's what happens to Tsundere/Jerkass couples when they grow up.)

-Suzuki Sonoko: Ran's best female friend, kinda flighty and flirty and spoiled but always on Ran's side. She's the daughter of super rich people with a huge company, so she brings Ran and COnan along on a lot of high-end stuff.

-Haibara Ai: she used to be a scientist for Black Org -- she's the one who made the apotoxin, the poison that shrunk him -- but when they killed her sister she took her own poison and shrank as well, and then ran off. She's now living with Professor Hagasa, the one who supplies Conan with his tech tricks, and going to school with Conan and his little gang of six year old detectives.

-Hattori Heiji: Great Highschool Detective of the West! (Shinichi is detective of the East XD) Heiji is the son of a police superintendent and from Osaka, so he speaks in osaka-ben. He's also highly intelligent but comes across as more laid back. He figures out Conan is Shinichi pretty early on and from there on they're allies (even though he regularly forgets not to call Conan Kudo in public. XD) He's also a kendo champion. Corpses have the habit of falling from the sky when he and Conan are together -- no, I didn't make that up for the fic. XD

Heiji has a childhood friend, Kazuha, who crushes on him hardcore (oh god Aoyama, you and your childhood friend = true love obsession) and is kinda possessive/jealous -- she once got kinda grarrr at Ran because she thought Ran was Kudo, the person Heiji kept chattering about, and she'd assumed from the way he went on and on about them, that Kudo was Heiji's Tokyo woman. (SHE WAS ONLY WRONG ABOUT THE GENDER, I HAVE TO SAY.) Anyway, Kazuha is otherwise cheerful and kinda perky. And Heiji seems to be totally clueless.

Heiji isn't as smart as Conan is (no one is) but he comes pretty close. As for how he compares to Hakuba... well, there was this case where they meet (Detective Koshien) and they spy a body pressed against a locked window. Since this is a v. mysterious locked room murder, Hakuba is concerned about preserving all evidence. Meanwhile Heiji jumps up to catch the windowsill and breaks the window to make sure the person was really dead and not in need of assistance. The moral of the story : "I prefer a detective who's more concerned about saving lives than about evidence."

-KAITOU KID. Kid cases are pretty rare, and usually happen when 1) Sonoko's family is somehow involved, 2) someone is trying to frame Kid for a theft or murder, and he always ALWAYS shows up to clear his name, 3) one of the bad guys hunting Kid takes a potshot at him.

Sometimes he and Conan are enemies (though Conan seems to be having fun trying to predict Kid's movements) and it often ends in a draw -- Kid gets away but without the jewel, for example. Sometimes they have to ally for the duration of a case. Sometimes Conan actually approves of what Kid is doing (for example exposing frauds) and so he lets him get away with it. XD Since onf of Kid's mottos is "no one gets hurt", murders at his heists are pretty rare and so you get the feeling that Conan can relax a bit there. Of course they'll be trying to out-trick each other, but that's what makes it fun for both.

Kid gives nicknames -- meitantei (great detective) or tantei-kun for Conan, tantei-san for Hakuba, tantei-han for Heiji (-han is osaka-ben for -san.) etcetera. He also loves, loves, LOVES disguises, and he's great at them, and since he can imitate voices and has no problem dressing in drag, well. ... It also just so happens that he and Shinichi look like each other so much that he can impersonate him without a mask, the only noticeable difference in the art style being that Shinichi's hair is always flattened down and Kaito's hair is a bird's nest. Which sends Conan into paroxysms of frustration since Ran is usually around going "... Shinichi? o__o" at those times. XD

*cough*

Yeah. >__>;;

-There's also the police people ...

The recurrent Black Org plot is more or less a loose frame surrounding a really long series of murder mysteries. ...I swear Conan must be cursed -- everywhere he goes EVER, there goes another corpse or three. XD I haven't caught up to it yet but last I knew the FBI had gotten involved... Complicated! XD;

Anyway. Yeah. >__>;;

Akako being DC canon is... kinda subjective. She showed up in the anime - very, very briefly, with only a few lines. Of course, this was a case that was never in the Detective Conan manga, and was stolen wholesale from Magic Kaito in order to create an episode special. (She also sort of does magic. /cough Uhh yeah.)

So with a really strict interpretation, she's not canon. But on the other hand, she can kind of be assumed to be canon.

... err yeah. SHE'S A WITCH. IT EXPLAINS EVERYTHING. Ohohoho~

[identity profile] araine.livejournal.com 2010-11-03 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, those were mostly the anime-only OVAs, I think. Which generally turned out to be cracky dreams. (Also cracky crossovers with Gosho's /other/ series, go figure.) But as mentioned below, she did show up in the clocktower case, which was part of the fourth volume of Magic Kaito that was written after Detective Conan and featured Shinichi. Akako had a premonition that Kaito's "great rival" would show up on the night of the clocktower case, and later did a spell to keep Kaito safe, but whether those actually had any affect within the Conan-universe is subjective.

I KINDA LOVE AKAKO A LOT THOUGH.
(Haha I actually wrote a fic shipping her with Hakuba awhile back.)

Hi! Great summary. I appreciate it as I never got a chance to read all the massive DC canon.

And oh, Kudo and Heiji... that one line from your Swingers!verse is now what comes to mind whenever I see those two. "And don't say you haven't been doing it, 'cause you've been having sex on the astral plane for years!" /paraphrase

When explaining Ai, you might want to include that Ai was always held unwillingly, because her sister was a hostage. (As opposed to willing, but turned when they killed her sister.)

Also, you have a couple of few typos: COnan, onf (I think you meant 'one of').

http://onetruthprevails.com/ <--This wiki seems a bit more detailed.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-04 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
That's true. It's hard to pin down Ai's character and motives, but that's part of what makes a character.

What I meant to get at though was explaining Ai to someone who has no familiarity with her at all. The phrasing you used (to me) seemed to imply Ai was manipulating people around her into thinking she'd changed sides, or just ran off when the consequences of her actions started to appear. What I was getting at is, if this summary is meant to be an intro for the complete n00b, maybe it would be good to explain that the characters treat her as if she's genuine.

Also, I am disappoint in noting that I made a typo in pointing out your typos. @_@ Oops?

That whole "sex on the astral plane" would count for Kid being pulled in, too. And possibly Saguru.

The Clock Tower case, like Goldeneye and Scroll of the Dark Knight, is much more tonally DC than it is MK, and Shinichi even makes an appearance in the manga case, so you can really argue either way for her canonicity. However, there are hints in DC that psychic abilities DO exist, even if full-fledged magic isn't real. Ai's reaction to Syndicate presence, Conan/Shinichi's connection to Ran, Heiji's precognitive dream... all these are manga canon. Not to mention that when it's not a plot point, Kid still happily breaks the laws of physics with his quick-change abilities...

I think this is a good place to share the icon I made when Icka got me started reading the manga...

Kanmuri, for those that don't know him, is from "Yakitate!! Japan", a cracked out series about baking bread. It has recipes. :) I used him since I wanted someone asleep at the computer.

Yeah, you go in to read key cases, the next thing you know you're starting at the beginning and coming up for air a few hundred chapters later. I've made it to 631 so far....

Thanks so much for this; I love your stories, but I was having a really hard time figuring out who was who since I know nothing about this manga at all. They make much more sense now. =D

Kaito Kid's white tux outfit is pretty awesome, however. I may have to go read those.

I live in hope of like to believe that Akako will eventually find her way into DC. Her magic would probably be a little toned down, if at all present (DC being primarily from Conan's/the investigator's POV), but I think it's possible. Can you imagine Conan investigating a case where she's a suspect? :DDD

The FBI stuff is incredibly complicated. Double-crossing, disguises, not-actually-dead, all sorts of fun stuff. If you have the time to invest, as it is a very slow part of the overarching story, I'd suggest reading it.

[identity profile] mika-kun.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

I've been poking around fic a little bit, and this has really cleared up some confusing stuff for me! I have to say I quite like fics which explore Conan's "corps curse". It's pretty cool how many interpretations people can come up with. Death following him around vs. he's guided to corps so that the dead can find peace.

Corpses have the habit of falling from the sky when he and Conan are together -- no, I didn't make that up for the fic. XD
I've been terrible about commenting lately (partly because I've been using computer with security settings turned up) but the DC fic wouldn't of been nearly as amazingly awesome if it wasn't canon. XD Clever.

Detective conan is ♥ though sadly I've never gotten around to reading Magic Kaito. D:

I swear Conan must be cursed -- everywhere he goes EVER, there goes another corpse or three.

That's actually a plot point in a couple of fics, this one (http://candyfics.livejournal.com/202720.html) by Candyland comes to mind.

*Selina waves at the plot bunny of 'curse removed' Shinichi realizing that he's only encountered three corpses in the last two months*

Spoiler about FBI!

(Anonymous) 2011-01-30 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
SPOILER: I figure I'll help a bit with the FBI/CIA bits :D
There are 4 main FBI agents. Jodie who looks like a short-haired Vermouth. James Black who is her driver (XD but he is higher in rank), Andrew Camel who is big, burly and a very good driver, and Akai Shuichi.
Akai is Gin's "Silver Bullet" and thus, the guy Gin HATES, and at one time Akai was undercover in the BO.

CIA-wise, Mizunashi Rena/Hidemi Hondou/Kir, an undercover CIA agent in the BO. After she was captured by the FBI and he CIA-ness was let out she was sent back to the BO and had to kill Akai Shuichi to prove she was loyal.

Right now Akai is 'dead' no one knows if he's really dead or not, not us or the FBI, though I think Conan knows the truth.

So far Kir has told us of a newly activated agent, Bourbon. And Okiya Subaru has appeared and is currently living in Shinichi's House, and a creepy "scar Akai" has appeared with Akai's face and a giant scar. (and from what I read people are quite sure one of them is the Real Akai, and the other is Bourbon)
