naruto fic teaser - Team seven IN SPACE! or something.
Though so far it's only Sasuke. u.u;
And yes, it's supposed to be unclear about some things, though not about everything. if you can't understand a sentence at all please point it out.
Anyway! Scifi/space AU, Sasuke-centric, Team seven.
"You'll have to find a way to make sure of Sarutobi's replacement."
Sasuke opened the fridge and picked up a coffee can, popped a straw through the seal.
"It'll either be Utatane Koharu or Mitokado Homura, Sasuke, and you know neither of them approves of your continued freedom. Or of your continued existence, either."
Tasted like ass, but station coffee always did. It helped wake him up. Good enough. When it worked.
"Little brother..."
He didn't have a lot of coffee left. No second can today then. Sucked, because his head was still muzzy. At least sleeping in zero grav hadn't left him with a headache in... a very long time.
Not to say he didn't get headaches from other things.
He checked the clock. A half-hour until gravity and the official start of his day.
"You need to do something about them, Sasuke. You know you do. I wish I could do it for you, but -- I can't. You'll have to. Sarutobi trusted you--"
Sasuke threw his can in the waste disposal; it hit with a loud clank. He rubbed his temples with both fists, knuckles and all. God, he wanted to wake all the way up already.
"They never did. They never will. They don't care that nothing happened yet. You can't afford--"
"Shut up," he rasped, eyes closed, hands pressing down on his ears until it hurt. Shit. One, two, three seconds, and he opened his eyes wide. "Computer, lights ninety percent." He kept them open even as the room went from muted yellow to bright, blinding white and his pupils constricted painfully.
Up. He slipped free from the table and pushed it back into the wall, started rummaging through his drawers. A half-hour before he had to be anywhere meant a half-hour he could spend running. As much as you could run in zero-grav. More like bouncing from foothold to conveniently angled wall. Needed more concentration than simple jogging. Suited him fine.
The first set of clothes that popped out was yesterday's, barely worn. Space-black from collar to boot, but then again a lot of his outfits were dark blue or black. This one didn't even have white stripes down his sides so that he wouldn't look like a person-shaped hull breach in case the lights went down.
He'd had to change for the funeral.
"...You miss him, don't you."
Sasuke gritted his teeth.
No choice anymore. He was awake now. He turned to his first aid kit -- in arm's reach, like almost everything else in the tiny room -- and got a fresh patch out. The old one didn't want to peel off right away; should have been good another day or two, but obviously not.
"There's nothing wrong with grieving, Sasuke. Sarutobi was a good person. He did the best he could."
Sasuke applied himself, washing the sticky residue first and then applying the new patch, on the back of his neck where it wouldn't crease too much from him nodding or turning his head. There. Only a couple of seconds for it to go into the bloodstream and right into his brain. Ten seconds, nine, eight... five...
Silence.
Anyway, clothes. He might as well be logical about it... No one on the station had enough cupboard space that they could afford to keep a formal outfit they'd use once every ten years. A big percentage of his clothes happened to be black. And he wasn't going to blow his pay on unnecessary cleaning fees.
He got fresh underclothes, and then slipped into his outfit from yesterday, zipping the black vest up to his chin.
He wasn't grieving Sarutobi, anyway. It wasn't denial. It wasn't the patch. He might have, if he could. He knew he should have. After the -- after -- Sarutobi had been the only one who dared to come close, who wasn't afraid of what Sasuke had become. Who still smiled and patted his head and asked if he needed anything, anything at all. Who got him a job when he grew old enough to ask for one. Sasuke was fully aware of his debt, of the respect the man had earned from him, of how much of a loss his death was.
He knew by all logic any child should have grown attached enough to mourn.
But he didn't.
He just didn't.
Twenty minutes left for his run, and then he needed to present himself to the labs for his daily before-work checkup. He'd have to mention the patches were losing efficiency. He keyed the locked door open, and walked out of the empty room.

What is this? Sasuke torture? I like messing with Sasuke.
Also, you're a gigantic tease. With the nifty world building and hints of things and intrigue and it settles like an itch in the brain that just can't be reached and whyareyoudoingthistome!!
...just curious.
(more plz? *grabbygrab*)

tell me what you've figured out by reading, plz? i'm not sure it all works like i want it to.
And of COURSE sasuke torture. he suffers so prettily. >D

What do I figure? Well, a lot of speculation really. Obviously Sasuke is hearing voices. Itachi presumably, unless you're being tricky. Possibly multiple persons? Real or imagined is up in the air. He appears to be taking meds to silence the voices, so obviously it's something drugs can affect, though perhaps he's acclimating, thus the lessened effectiveness. Are the drugs affecting his ability to feel strong emotion or is he genuinely apathetic about Sarutobi? I somewhat get the feeling he isn't, but if he's in denial it doesn't come across strongly enough for me to feel confident in that assessment. What is his connection with Sarutobi, and what say does he have in his successor? How old is Sasuke being portrayed in this? What is his job that requires him to have a lab appointment before going in? What canon elements come into play, through adaptation of events or similarities, to affect the character development? (Uchiha Massacre, Kyuubi Incident, Chuunin Exam...)
There's something else fluttering away at the back of my brain, but I can't quite define it. The significance of yesterday's outfit? After reading over this bit -
--The first set of clothes that popped out was yesterday's, barely worn. Space-black from collar to boot, but then again a lot of his outfits were dark blue or black. This one didn't even have white stripes down his sides so that he wouldn't look like a person-shaped hull breach in case the lights went down.
He'd had to change before the funeral.--
- for the umpteenth time, my brain finally made some sense out of it, if I assume that the previous day was Sarutobi's funeral. I feel kinda silly, but I'm not sure if that's a correct assumption on my part. (Is past my bedtime, shhhh.) Which would indicate he's wearing funeral garb as his day-to-day clothing and convincing himself it means nothing?
Also, does Sasuke have speshul powers, or does he just have a quirky can of coffee with a little straw attached to it?
So yeah, questions and I'm not sure how alert my cognitive brain is at the moment and hopefully I make more sense than not and didn't leave out any part that needed to be said for the production of sense.
I'm putting myself to bed now. Good luck darlin'.

yeah, yesterday was sarutobi's funeral, i need to rewrite that bit for clarity, i see where i did it wrong. >__>;
Okay, I need to fix the coffee thing, i just figured, he's in zero gravity so obviously the cans come with stuff that prevents the liquid from spilling, but it's not immediately understandable since i bring it up before i bring up the zero grav thing and i don't really explain the straw thinger (which sasuke wouldn't think about much, anyway, seeing as for him it's normal)
♥ night night, hon!

And some experiemnt went wrong...?
Am I the only one who makes good things happen to Sasuke?

... WELL. XD;;;
Am I the only one who makes good things happen to Sasuke?
Yes. u.u-b
SPOILERS TO OTHERS? I'm guessing what's between the lines
Some sort of trauma happened in Sasuke's past (obviously). This somehow left him in Sarutobi's care (implies he was orphaned). It also resulted in him hearing Itachi chat to him when Itachi is not, in fact, there at all. Considering he apparently wears a patch to block this out, I'd say he's probably just hearing voices instead of Itachi-ghost chatting to him. The way it sounded, the patch also suppresses emotions, so he a)couldn't get attached to Sarutobi the way he should have and b)can't really mourn him. Plus, he apparently has to be fully awake to use the patch, thus the fact that he's putting so much effort into waking up. One more layer: people are aware of his problem and don't trust him to... I dunno, not go completely psycho on them?
Is that about right?
Only line I couldn't really understand: "A quick flick of his fingers and the straw popped out." Is he flicking the can? I can't visualize this for some reason.
This sounds like a really cool fic. I am looking forward to finding out what happens next, and whether I'm right! ^_^
Re: SPOILERS TO OTHERS? I'm guessing what's between the lines
Plus, one correction: the patch might suppress emotions, but apparently Sasuke's under the impression that this is not why he didn't get attached to Sarutobi.
MORE SPOILERS MWAHAHA.

Ayep.

Ayep... kindofyep. :DDDDDD

It's more like the patch and the not getting attached are both results of the same thing, but they're not directly related to each other.
Plus, he apparently has to be fully awake to use the patch, thus the fact that he's putting so much effort into waking up.
Hrrm. It's more like he hoped the voice would go away on its own if he wasn't half asleep or fully asleep (hearing it in dreams is okay because he can blame it on his subconscious fucking with him, but not irl), but it didn't, so.
Will fix this.
One more layer: people are aware of his problem and don't trust him to... I dunno, not go completely psycho on them?
:DDDDDD-b
Patch goes where the curse seal is canonically?
mmmyes.
Also, why would Sasuke be thinking "No choice now"? It's the only indication we have that he's at all reluctant to wear the patch. Well. Except Itachi, but I'm not sure if he counts.
Ahh, good point about how that sounds. I was thinking like, he was hoping it wouldn't be necessary to change the patch today instead of tomorrow (because it means it's losing eficiency, which is DX) , but it turned out to be. it wasn't clear though.
*dances* thank youuuuuuu~~~~ ohohohoho.

Hmm... I'm gonna take a running leap and guess that Sasuke is hearing voices and that the patch is designed to help with that? Or maybe he's haunted? I don't know why I can't shake the feeling that Itachi isn't really there, except that he stops talking after the new patch is applied. :\
Now I want to know who Sasuke misses! D:

I don't know why I can't shake the feeling that Itachi isn't really there,
Ufufufufufu. Maybe because Sasuke also does his utmost best not to acknowledge he's talking. Or maybe because when sasuke leaves, the room behind him is empty... XD I admit it's not blatant.
will rewrite to make things clearer. thanks for the help! ^__^

But if Itachi was never there, if this isn't a universe in which he and Sasuke aren't estranged, then the things he's saying seem really out of character to me (I could be wrong, but). And given the position of the patch and that it apparently is something he's supposed to wear (at first, I thought it was a forbidden/discouraged thing)... Also, Sarutobi wasn't afraid of what Sasuke had become after the incident Sasuke refuses to name.
Going out on a limb here: The incident is Chuunin Exam-equivalent, and he was... "implanted," maybe? with some kind of super-cutting-edge-specialized technology that's roughly equivalent to the cursed seal. Sasuke being who he is, his lack of caring doesn't really need to be justified, but it could be tied to the implant, the incident, or both, as could the way he's feared and not trusted. The implant may have a metamorphic affect on him; something at least to cause him (and others) to classify himself as a "what" rather than a "who". The implant is also what allows someone else to whisper to him using his brother's voice, inciting him to do questionable things (making sure of someone who will never trust you, and you can't afford-- sounds to me like bribery, blackmail, or an assassination plot). The patch's purpose is to cancel, or at least dampen, the implant's effects.
If there's no implant, then there was some sort of trauma which resulted in a psychosis, which largely manifests as (a) voice(s) that sound(s) like Itachi but isn't/aren't and may also cause Sasuke to become or appear inhuman; the patch's purpose is to suppress it. But I like the implant idea better. >.>
A couple technical notes: quick research shows that dermal penetration rates are typically measured in minutes or hours, not seconds, and transdermal patches are not usually placed on the back or neck. Obviously you have a symbolic reason for the placement of your patch: I thought that maybe it could explain the faster timing, but no matter how I look I cannot find any veins or arteries leading to the brain that pass even near Sasuke's cursed seal; those that do continue either to the arm or down the spine.

Also, I wasn't confused by the can-straw thing. I could even picture it, but that might just be because I've been reading the Crest of the Stars manga and novels again. That might be why I thought "advanced communication device" over "hearing voices" too.
On that note, if you'd like ideas for interesting space-age technologies, spaceship terminology, crew positions, etc, go right ahead and ask me. I should have that shit on the brain for a good four or five months yet.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-22 01:58 am (UTC)(link)The comedy potential. You must use it. Also what are the odds of zero gravity naughtiness? :D
I’d like to muse on Sarutobi and Brainitachi but everything I’ve come up with so far has already been said.
(Unrelated, but I was watching a dubbed filler arc with Anko in it and who should appear but Sasuke? And it could have just been the phrasing of Mr. Yuri Lowenthal, but the conversation had just a little innuendo.
Orochimaru: Yes, and also my-
Sasuke: Some things are better left unsaid…
They’re also wearing identical kimonos which is far, far funnier then it should be.)

re: sex, i dunno. it might even end up more gen than not *gasp!* so... well. i'd be more tempted to make them have funny awkward incidents and bouncing apart XD;;;
