They wave that word around, "newtype," like it's either evil or salvation. It's "difference", it's "evolution," "mutation," "your children will be better" and "you're obsolete." It's scary. It's immense.

Between a newtype and a not, there's not even much of a difference.

People try to put it in boxes, like understanding is mastery. They decide, they say, there's empathy, and telepathy, and telekinesis, and prescience, and psychometry, tons of well-defined abilities that no one alive quite fits into.

For Duo it means a hunch here, momentary good luck there -- but the universe owes him some karma pocket-change after the way it ruined him. Wufei's hate for lies might as well be just a quirk.

For Trowa, it might be "I am not here, I am not important" -- reverse-empathy, they'd label it, because they have to label everything -- the ability to make people not feel you -- except that only counts when there's someone to feel or not in the first place. For Quatre, "newtype" means having your finger on the pulse of the world, the heart of the universe, and you would say it means nothing at all, and he would smile and say it means everything.

For Heero it doesn't mean anything at all, because the universe hurts too much to let it in.

That was lovely; and Duo no less. See? He still speaks to you. I rather liked that take on Duo having a newtype ability too. Quatre's is the most obvious, because they actually name it in the series, but I've often wondered what the creator had in mind for the others.

No, she pretty much nailed the strongest theories for Duo & Wufei in terms of potential newtypes (before the creators decided it was one too many pans in the fire & dropped the subplot) -- Duo's use of the expression, "I've just got a hunch," and certainty about things that everyone else is uncertain about (Heero defusing the bomb was one, I think). I also seem to recall an implication that Wufei can tell when someone is lying.

Trowa as reverse-empathy... now that is one I've never heard of before (in any context). I rather like that notion.

The 'reverse-empathy' thing is a weird idea. It would be like people know he's here intellectually, but there's no emotional reaction to his presence, even one so banal as interest and curiosity. It could be a double-edged ability, though, if it makes someone more likely to be rational about why he can't be here. *ponders*

Also, it would explain how much I still can't manage to care about him pretty well. >_>;

The problem is that I remember the tricks of the trade to make a voice seem Duo-like, but I can't really feel him anymore. And I don't remember anymore why I thought Duo and Heero had chemistry. I think I need a pairing manifesto here. XDDD;;;

*sigh* I've heard about the newtype thing. I even had it explained to me once. Unfortunately, I don't actually know enough about it to actually get what you were trying to get at with all of them. ;_;

On a completely different note? I've always, always loved the idea of Duo with precognition, and I'm tickled with the idea that Wufei can tell people around him are lying because He Just Knows.

"newtype" was a notion from other Gundam universes that they talked about bringing into the GW parallel-verse, but eventually didn't. From living in space, people born there start developing strange abilities... argh, how to explain it.

Wikipedia says!

the next stage of human evolution in the fictional Gundam universe. The theory behind this minor but groundbreaking metamorphosis is that in order to adapt to life in space, the human body evolved with heightened mental awareness.

Newtypes have an extremely high degree of spatial awareness. Some but not all, are capable of empathically detecting other Newtypes, and are sensitive to the hostile intentions directed at them by others, allowing them to uncannily preemptively react to such dangers.

More powerful Newtypes also exhibit telepathic and telekinetic abilities.

Heero knew where he was in the hospital (spatial awareness), he's strong and heals and learns fast, that could be a newtype ability. And Quatre is more or less an empath... they just never said it out loud. So they fit the criteria of what would make them be newtypes in other gundam series, it's just that in GW the newtype thing was never mentioned explicitly at all. As for the others, I was just playing with what looked likely for the characters. They're all very competent for 15 year olds, though. ;p
