Heero-centric GW drabble

IT'S JUST A DRABBLE!! IT DOESN'T COUNT!! I'M NOT GOING BACK IN THERE!!! DDDDD:

They laugh when he chooses to sleep in his Gundam, instead of camping out with them. They talk of tents, night breezes, the immensity of the sky, as if they're selling points. They're space babies; the novelty makes them happy. Not him. They assume he's obsessed with war, the mission, the risks, that he wants to be ready for battle at a moment's notice. They think it's a bit sad how he only feels safe cradled inside a war machine.

It's also true.

Mostly he sleeps in his Gundam because when he doesn't, he dreams age-faded memories of explosive decompression.

It's not even really the idea I wanted to write at first. *sadness* I have something about people growing up on colonies liking to close every door and window and liking solid structures around them, but that's more of a background, worldbuilding detail than anything to base a fic on.

... Not that I want to write a real GW fic again. >_>

No, really, I don't.

i can't think of anythiiiiing. heero, you whore, talk more loudly or go away already ToT

... explosive decompression. There's something you don't see on a regular basis.

[identity profile] windandwater.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* It makes sense. And I vaguely remember a discussion about how people born in space would naturally close all windows and doors, so that if there's a breach to the colony itself, you'd stay alive with your trapped air.

[identity profile] solitude1056.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd think there's probably a major analogy between deep-sea divers/miners and space-colony mindsets: the notion that you're enclosed and if there's nothing between you and the environment, it's instant death.

(I'd expect morbid fascination to also be what propels some colony-babies to sleep open-air, without even a tent -- the notion that somehow you're risking something, cheating death if only on a psychological level.)

[identity profile] windandwater.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it would depend on if the person is colony-born and never been on Earth at all or whether they moved from Earth to the colonies (or at least visited Earth enough), just in terms of affecting how a person feels about 'open air'. Though, it might be interesting to play with the idea that colony-born people would somehow become agoraphobic when on Earth, just because of the fact that there's 'nothing' surrounding them.

This just occured to me -- there are people I know in RL who can't/won't sleep under the open sky, who can but aren't comfortable, don't sleep well, and can't seem to put their finger on why.

I recall years ago, going car-camping (as opposed to a more extensive hike), and the park ranger came by to explain we couldn't tie the tent to trees; we had to use the single pole. It was an old pup-tent, and needed two poles, so we shrugged and folded up the tent to put back into the car, and laid out our sleeping bags right there on the ground. The park ranger was nearly beside himself: did we want a tent, they had one or two extra, maybe he could find us an alternate camping spot with two poles we could use... we kept saying, no, no, we'll be fine.

It wasn't until after he left that we noticed all the other camping sites were either RVs (with people sleeping inside) or significant-sized tents (big enough to stand in, some with little 'vestibules'). Here we were in a gorgeous camping area in the Appalachian mountains, and we were the only ones laying outside to watch the stars before falling asleep.

Since then, I've paid attention to that, and yes, people do seem to find it a little unnerving to sleep without roof or cover of some kind. For pretty much our entire lives, the vast majority of people (especially in urban/suburban environments) will always sleep with a roof of some kind, be that house or car or tent. There's a sense of exposure in sleeping 'in the open' that people can't handle, if they've never done it before.

Given that, it's entirely possible all of the boys might be sleeping in their Gundams, with the possible exception of Trowa, who may have slept out in the open while with the mercenaries (in which 'sleeping with others around' acts in lieu of 'sleeping under cover'). We just don't realize how much our artificial environments impact our mindsets, though you can get a sense of it if you watch people struggling to cope with walking two blocks in 90F heat after being in air-conditioned splendor for most of the morning.

Well, the human species as a whole tends to prefer enclosed spaces during vulnerable times, mostly because we're pretty frail as far as mammals go. Sure we've got big brains and opposable thumbs, but drop a modern person in the middle of nowhere and you usually get a freakout of some sort. Sleeping outside is something you have to be accustomed to, or do for the novelty. I personally don't like to do it because bugs eat me alive. :/

But if we go along with what we see in canon for the GBoyz, there doesn't seem to be many reasons why they would need to sleep in their Gundams in the first place. All of them find some sort of lodgings. Heero drifts through boarding schools at the beginning, Duo has the Sweepers, Trowa joined the Circus, Quatre... is rich and was in a hotel during one part, and Wufei... okay. Wufei might've slept in his Gundam because I can't quite remember where he was staying during the early part of the series.

They don't seem to be particularly traumatized though. Duo, in particular, made a point of looking up at the stars and moon because the view of them is better from Earth.

nice XD

*tempts the GW bunnies out into the open*

[identity profile] uneko.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
but they're so cute! Look at them! those little shiny eyes, the bushy whiskers, the insistant nose-twitching! Look at how their velvety ears perk when you say 'Heero', or 'Gundam'... the seed of hope, budding in their soul...

You don't want to crush that, do you? XD

[identity profile] ktoth04.livejournal.com 2007-10-03 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
haha, I shall join you in the temptation... what should we offer the GW bunnies?

[identity profile] uneko.livejournal.com 2007-10-05 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm... Carrots. Mine are always responsible to a variety of lubricants and sex toys... Oh, and Egypt in any shape or form, but that I that's just *my* bunnies. Hmmm. Virgin 'sacrifices'? :D

[identity profile] ktoth04.livejournal.com 2007-10-05 10:40 am (UTC)(link)

Yeah, sure, and I'm not curious about how would a GW/FFVII crossover would work.

You need a cookie for hitting Asuka with that plunnie. *offers cookies*

*hides from Asuka* ;)

*COOKIE*

Bunnies are delicious.

No of course it doesn't count what are we thinking? ^_^ Ah, GW. The fandom that just won't quit. I've never been able to write in it, really, but I go through sporadic periods of Gundam pilot worship. *sheepish grin*

You know, that makes a hell of a lot of sense, the idea that colony brats wouldn't necessarily find the breeze comforting. They grew up in a place where weather didn't really exist as we know it. It wouldn't be much more than a novelty, and one that fast gets old. Also, the idea of Heero having dreams about explosive decompression? DDDDDDDDDDDDD: *squishes him* *is shot* *regrets nothing*

[identity profile] book-people.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmph. And L5, too, maybe, though it's probably a safe bet to say L1 and L3 don't, simply because it wasn't as economical.

It would be interesting, though, to see something that explores how they all react to a breeze. Maybe even more so because they all have different ideas of what a breeze means, subconsciously.
...Damnit! I wish they'd bloody talk to me! *pokes characters*

Adi

[identity profile] solitude1056.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Not even L5, since it was slated for destruction b/c of its age and general decrepitude. I seem to recall the reason for attempting to slaughter the population with a virus (Ep Zero, the plot Treize halted, IIRC) was because it'd save the Alliance the cost of replacing/rebuilding a colony, let alone the cost of transplanting an entire population from one colony-ring to another. But L5 was supposedly one of the first colonies built (and it, along with L4, I believe, is one of the most stable of the LaGrange points -- I think L2 is least-stable, followed by L1... hrm) and thus was, err, getting on in years.

Quatre just might be the only one who'd not only not react negatively to a breeze, but think a lack of breeze indicates the general ventilation system has shut down -- and thus conclude the general system is in trouble, possibly nearing failure. It's like in deep-sea stations (or Mir), where the major warning is when all engines go abruptly silent. Baaaaaaaad sign.

I'd think an autumn breeze (a few shades stronger than a gentle spring breeze or a high-rise building's internal vent) would get them all tense... but the wind/clouds that roll in just prior to a major thunderstorm would probably have them all freaking. If silently. Still, freaking.

daf;jadf;djas How can you fit such prettyness in 100 words.

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I do so love to see the little buggers get even just a tiny little toe hold in your psyche. You can never be completely free. You write them too well to ever be completely free. Bwhahahaha!
^_____^

[identity profile] sunhawk16.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You obviously must drag out your DVDs and rewatch the joy that is Duo. *nod nod*
And of COURSE I still write for the fandom! I am crushed that you did not know that! Crushed!! *weeps pathetically in corner behind piles of unfinished works*

regardless if you if you ever step foot near it....this drabble screams Heero, meaning I like it <3

Ahh, Gundam Wing... *reminises*

...

*of a few days ago* -_-;;

But yes, "Heero = Win", it's like a formula in physics now. And honestly, I love your Heero, he's my favorite ^_^ I have yet to find someone else who's Heero I like more. So, you know, I'm totally not complaining ^_^
