To make the type on the icons look good without going so sharp and pixelated, make sure you've got anti-aliasing turned on in photoshop. Over on the character window (where you can change font and size), there should be a little box with various options: none, strong, crisp, smooth, sharp. Those turn on anti-aliasing and give you options (I think 'smooth' is the default?) -- if it's set to "none" then you get font-faces that look like the ones on your icons.

Fffftt. Now go draw more, you eight-year-old!
