... Sasuke. *♥.♥*
In other news, it seems so very strange to me when a shounen manga fulfills staples of the shounen genre and people act surprised.
It's not a great tragedy. It's not groundbreakingly realistic. It's a shounen manga about ninjas as good, moral guys. It targets 12 to 14 year old boys. It's a damn good shounen manga, but it's aimed at young male teenagers. It's not trying to be uber-innovative and break all the cliches in one go. It can't be TOO innovative or else, not only it would be a seinen (adult guys), not a shounen, but it would miss the intended target audience liek whoa. People LIKE these cliches. They're powerful, they're awe-inspiring, they're guaranteed inspirational tear-jerkers (except for us jaded folks who have seen it all -- but surprise! we're not 13 year old teenagers.)
Of course there aren't going to be as many awesome female characters in the spotlight as there are males. BOYS are supposed to read this. Boys mostly see female characters as characters to drool over (and perhaps characters who also do shiny plot stuff), they don't IDENTIFY with them. Considering how macho the Japanese society is and that so many shounen mangas keep all their females in cheerleader roles, it's already a miracle that there are ANY girl fighters, much less girl fighters in important positions.
Of course Kurenai was going to end up pregnant. It's only one of the strongest cliches/symbolisms of the "a good guy died wrongfully, but something of him remains, and life goes on" plotline. (did the Lion King teach you nothing??? Come on. "It's the ciiiircle of liiiiife~") It was almost as cliche as "good guy can't die of a mortal wound before giving his last words" (btw Kishi I'm still sorry for having called you a wuss.)
Of course the bad guys are going to die. Why do I even have to mention this. D:
Seriously. Naruto is an awesome manga, with awesome characters and an awesome universe. Sometimes it has plotholes. It had them in part 1 too and that didn't stop people from enjoying it. (if it did they wouldn't be here anymore, would they? Or else they're more masochistic than I am, and seeing as I watched the fillers religiously every week, that's saying something.)
It's also aimed at 12 year olds. So stop being surprised when it acts like it. D:

I think Kishimoto's making Sasuke into a fantastic anti-hero. And there's always that saying: The enemy of my enemy is my friend?
Oh, and if Kabuto and Sasuke fight I think I'll be able to die a happy woman.

Not my issues with the manga, as it happens. I really don't care about the shounen conventions, or the fact that the bad guys die.
I am, however, upset when the themes and characterizations get messed with, because that's what I liked about the series in the first place. If those are gone, what do I have left to like about Naruto? I'm not in it for the hot guys. I'm not in it for the gay (or else I'd be reading yaoi manga). I'm in it for the themes, the characterization, the plot, and the art. If any of those suffer, my enjoyment of the manga will suffer.
Naruto was an awesome manga. Before Shikastu showed up, and before Kishimoto messed with the themes. Now it's something that was an awesome manga but is beginning to lose its sparkle. It's sad, but consistant writing is difficult to keep up. Especially when there are marketing pressures involved and you try to please the polls and aim for the mighty dollar in the meantime.
I'm not surprised.
I'm just incredibly disappointed.
Wry, Kishimoto? Wry? ;_;

It's good that you commented because I wanted to drop you a words and I wasn't sure where and how, or even if I should.
I'm gonna defriend you for a while. It's not a "omg I hate you now" thing, it's just a "I'm still enjoying myself very much with the manga and would rather not be dragged down by others' lack of enjoyment", compounded by some "I REALLY don't feel like debating my point of view with anyone right now". So I'll wait until the current storm is past, probably drop in regularly to get a look in the meantime, and refriend you later. It's a lot easier to manage when it's not directly on my friendslist, because then I can put myself in the right frame of mind before I click. (also I'm way too lazy to figure out filters. XD)
But yeah. You're not kittens, sunshine and butterflies enough for my feeble mind right now. XD

Sometimes, just sometimes, I think we all (myself included) read way to deeply into the manga.
I love the art, it's gotten more amazing lately...half the time I don't even read the chapter translations ;x

A good message; it's refreshing, it's a good reminder, and I'm glad it was said. The things that bother me will continue to bother me, but if nothing else I'm staying for the fun -- and it's a lot of fun.
And, oh, Sasuke.... *__*

But at the same time, the thoughts a lot of people have for the characters makes them either really shoujo or sue-ified.
my point is, I needed to hear your "It's SHOUNEN, DAMMIT!" speech. :D thanks, Asuka.

In other news, I completely agree with you. When I first started watching the anime (I admit, I watched the anime before reading the manga *shame*) I was simply ecstatic that the kids grew with each passing ep. Sasuke at Valley of the End did not look exactly like Sasuke from episode three. You're right about the cliches, too. People like seeing the cliches. That's how they become cliches. Because they work. People bitching about something being overdone always confuse me. I mean, when you're dealing with 12 year old boys and have something that works, why change it?

For those who are criticizing the plot and/or themes, it's a manga, a work of fiction. Come on, lighten up. Even my favorite authors write books sometimes that I think need some help, but I'm not going to stop reading them cause I do it for pleasure.
Ok, now that I've throwen my 2 cence in, I'll take my leave.
Bye-bye

I see it as character progression. We realise that things were going on behind the scenes and we are now getting a peek!
I agree with you and I read Naruto manga 15 chapters at a time to get a good sense of progression and to be pleasantly surprised.
I liked the idea that Sasuke has not changed and that Shikamaru is as intelligent as all the adults think he is ^_^ The vengeance theme is perfect for a shounen manga. I think maybe some people need to remember what is canon and what is fanon in the Narutoverse!!!
Oh I also <3 Sasuke!!!!

Obviously, a shounen manga is going to have some shounen elements. It's kind of, y'know, required by definition of the term. The bad guys lose, the good guys win in new and overly-dramatic ways, the girls have big boobs. You'd think people would grasp a simple little concept like that, but nooo. XD
Also, Asuka-san, you inspired one of the longest rants I have written in months, and I don't know whether to thank you or have my abused keyboard demand an apology. (At last count, it was 1100 words. I don't even write that much in Sasuke/Naruto argument dialogue, and those go on forever if I don't tell the boys to shut up or have sex! XD;;;)

...oh who am I kidding it's pretty much just Shikathat they suddenly lack the ability to enjoy what is still a great series anymore. And there is a reason cliches are cliches in the first place--they're tried and true. They work. No, really.KISHIMOTO I STILL LOVE YOU <3

I Sometimes suck, and I sometimes am made of pure awesome.
