rarr (art sites rant)

So there's Deviantart.com, with its really irritating "eww those two guys are sleeping naked face to face and not even touching IT'S PORN *delete*" and "oh hehehe, that's a sexy woman in leather dominatrix gear with a hand on her crotch licking the thick, long handle of her whip, let's put it on daily favorites". I could handle the no NC-17 rule if it was more consistent. Oh well. I've invested too much of my time in this archive to leave now.

There was sheezyart.com too, which was "like devart, but with porn", to which I was "AWESOME." Until it sold out, and forbid porn even more stringently than devart, thus transforming into a bad copy of devart with lower traffic, and then went on hiatuses and "down for repairs" for months and months, and which new interface and layout are hideous. And if it's really just Devart Lite, I don't feel like taking two hours to upload one pic to the two sites.

But I digress.

I can deal with devart and sheezy's idiosyncraties.

There's a somewhat-high-traffic site that allows porn, and yet. I hate it. For a reason that's rather silly, and probably out of proportion.

Still. I hate Y!Gallery. Hate it. Haaate it.

Because the first thing I see when I'm linked to their site is a big bold "oh, you can't upload anything and the site is liable to freeze your computer because your navigator sucks donkey balls and we don't feel like adapting to it, because only retards use internet explorer, never mind that IE is the most used navigator everywhere. Only the cool kids who use firefox or mozilla or safari or netscape get to be a part of our super-speshul club and share and navigate the yaoi pr0n."

I hate the tone of their little blurb. I don't care if the info they give about IE is true; it's condescending and snotty. I wouldn't mind "this would be more pretty in firefox, because that's what I use to navigate, so hey! I might have missed IE-specific stuff." But this isn't what they're saying; they're saying, basically: "okay, you can share your stuff and see the sexy yaoi pics! but only if you DESERVE them. By converting to our system. Because yours is eww." *chews on things*

I understand banning adult art, even if it bugs me a bit to be unable to share them properly. But for a public archive to refuse to upload anything for everyone who's too dumb and lazy to stop using IE right now ? No.

And yeah, I've got an account there. It truly is impossible to upload anything. On top of extremely frustrating. On top of "ewwwww a boobie".

Oh and their screen size is too wide for mine. *huffs*

I'm not going to complain to them, I'm not going to petition them. Their sandbox, their rules. I'll just take my ball and go home.

But yeah.

I hate Y!gallery.

... do you have a paid account for LJ? Because then you can just upload pics to the ScrapBook. Unless you wanna just post up your pics for reviews. :P

[identity profile] windandwater.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
The ScrapBook isn't so bad. You can even customize it and stuff. That's what K-chan did with hers, to match her LJ.

*headdesk* You poor thing. Internet geeks may not like IE, for their geeky reasons which are valid, but for non-geeks IE works just fine. I used IE until Sister convinced me to switch to Firefox, and while the tabs thing and being able to block ads and images I don't like is nice, IE worked just fine for me while I used it, and for those stupid people to disregard the fact that yes, there are some people in this world who use IE and don't mind its limitations and don't want to download a different browser, and their doing so is probably causing me to miss out on some of your porny art, makes me want to attack them with a large pointy object of large pointyness.

[identity profile] complexphoenix.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Aaaaaand I need to remind myself again not to condemn whatever annoys you without actually looking at it first. Now that I have actually looked at that page in IE and seen what it is you speak of... those people don't seem that stupid or horrible. I guess it is rather condescending, but they seem essentially well-meaning. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with them... but one ok person can rub another ok person the wrong way completely.

[identity profile] complexphoenix.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
There IS obviously something inherently wrong with Sheezyart, though. And why, why, why does devart force you to sign up with them in order to look at stuff that's got a mature warning or comment on a work. I really hate devart that way.

Because they want to be sure that children can't access something inappropriate for their age ? When nobody's logged in they can't be sure it's not an 8-year-old who's using the computer.

[identity profile] complexphoenix.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Even when people are logged in they can't be sure it's not an 8-year-old. Anyone can lie to a disclaimer screen; they really only need to warn once, and then a person who doesn't want to see it can hit the back button before they ever hit the pron.

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but then when the parents get mad about their precious little angel seeing something inappropriate, they only have angel and themselves to get mad at with any sense of fairness. The kid had to lie and jump through hoops to see that artistic nude. It wasn't just laying out for them to stumble across with the mere click of a button.

[identity profile] complexphoenix.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... I hate having to jump through hoops too.

[identity profile] bubble.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I can't draw to save my life, so I can't feel your pain. ;-; So, yeah...for now, I'll probably agree with [livejournal.com profile] windandwater.

[identity profile] questofdreams.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
.....the pple at Y!Hosting clearly did not think out the layout of the site. And that's a major pity b/c there really are some talented artists there and such pretty pretty pr0n. XD *shakes head* I always wondered why you didn't post your artwork there, lol. Now I know. ;__;

[identity profile] jemisard.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
And, they have a security measure which means if yu have a dynamic IP, you will be randomly logged out every time your IP shifts. This is obviously your personal fault (as I was informed).

So if you're on old dial up, forget about logging in to look at anything or upload.

[identity profile] jemisard.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
All I wanted was a single site to upload fanfiction to. Multi genre, multi rating. Since I write primarily slash, I figured I should look there. Was I ever enchanted by that attitude being thrown at me.

I know more and more people shunning it. For too many furries, for not allowing furries, for upload times, for sheer difficulty of navigation and IP problems and...

::takes a breath:: Well, that was a mini rant. Sorry bout that.

It's probably pragmatism that made YGallery warn people off IE. Any webmaster can make a layout that exploits the power of DHTML and AJAX and this and that client technology, but with a caveat: Whatever they make will work in IE, or in every browser which has actually been updated in the past two or three years, but not both. So, faced with the choice of making a second layout every bit as intricate as the standards-compliant one, and encouraging people to stop using an extremely dangerous program, they took the easy way out.

The Devart policy towards what they consider porn is very annoying, in my opinion. I find your drawings way less offensive that some of those fetish daily deviations >_< but I guess the moderators there are guys, and their determination of what is 'artistic nude' is pretty much gender-influenced.

[identity profile] bloodyscary.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
But dear, naked woman with leather thong is ART !

Naked boy is pron !!!!!
*bad bad bad*

But maybe that is because IE crashed my system horribly and since then I've been using Firefox U_U
But indeed, they could be a little less forceful in their love of Firefox ^^;; I'm not really involved in the community, but I like the overall feeling of the site. You get nice feedback (but sometimes people just fav fav fav and don't comment U_U) But that's just my opinion :P I understand your point of view completely though XD
Sheezyart... really, really sucks. Argh. Deviantart runs so slow on my PC T_T Woe, maybe I should re-upload my own website or something XD

Ugh...working in a tech-support call centre, I deal with attitudes like that every day. Co-workers who laugh about "someone has Windows 98 and wants to use DSL?" as if they're completely stupid (rather than old, poor, or any of a number of other reasons as to why they don't have Windows XP). And then there are Firefox-snob callers who audibly recoil when they're asked to use IE (since that's what we support as an ISP) so we can configure their modems.

I wish I knew of a good hosting site, but being a shite artist, I have nothing worth posting, so I'm really only familiar with DevArt due to friends who use it. Wish I could be of more help, because I bet it would be worth it to see your work.

(Oh, and my Firefox-based version of Netscape is being a pain right now...so much for their wonderful platform!)
