O_O filler whut?
OMG. the latest filler ep didn't completely suck. *amazed*
Or at least it's vaguely tolerable. When it started I thought it was predictable as fuck, but it's not as predictable as i thought. Besides the characters act a lot less stupid than they did in the previous arc. (re: forgetting to check that an enemy is dead, for example)
Okay, there are still moments of "NO, THIS JUTSU DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY." (Neji uses kaiten when Naruto and Tenten are beside him, and it creates a shield around the three of them instead of blowing everything away, for one thing) And there are still things that appear to be a bit plotholy -- like when we learn of a new plot twist, if I went back and nitpicked at it, it probably wouldn't quite fit.
But, well, it isn't as horrible as I feared. I actually went to check if the next ep was there yet when I was done with the previous one, instead of downloading whenever I remember and then stuffing it into a corner until I'm bored to death again.
Also...
1) this ep actually didn't follow Naruto every second. It was fairly well constructed, i thought. and it had suspense. (and I like the decors, especially the tunnel opening in the garden for some reason)
2) the filler characters aren't as boring as I thought (even if they're still fairly two dimensional -- that will always be better than, say, that chick who does lez things with sakura, or the guy she was crushing on, or the butterfly-thing, or Raiga, or... *blocks the rest from her mind*) I like the boring sidekick better now that he's proved he's not just sweet, faithful and dumb like a dog (by getting hunted down and stabbed and even then, being smart enough to fake his own death by drowning -- though how did they miss a lone hollow reed in the middle of that canal? XD)
3) darker subjects and themes -- betrayal and revenge and politics are central. Considering that the latest okay arc was the one that was centered on finding a bug... yeah. there are still silly moments, but it's not as central.
4) KAKASHI. yeah.
Askerian: OH WOW.
Askerian: O_O THEY DO NINJA THINGS.
Askerian: IN NARUTO.
Askerian: like, apart from kicking ass
Saro Lynne: What? No! It's impossible. There's no such thing. XD
Saro Lynne: ...Really?
Askerian: kakashi is all "no, the mission is done, we can't go and save naruto because he deserved it and he'll be killed; sometimes we have to make sacrifices" and all
Askerian: and then they leave and there was a spy melted into the rock
Askerian: *happy*
Askerian: it really looked like he was serious too XD
Saro Lynne: XD
Saro Lynne: I see.
Askerian: if i didn't remember his "those who abandon their comrades are lower than trash" speech, i'd actually be worried
Askerian: *amazed* they got something right
No, seriously -- Kakashi looked way cool and serious. O_o; It didn't look too silly or too obviously a lie.
Askerian: OMFG WHAT. XDDD
Askerian: omg XD
Saro Lynne: What happened?
Askerian: ... tenten and neji and kakashi sitting in a tree
Askerian: eating
Askerian: then devouring
Askerian: then fighting each other for an apple (tenten wins)
Askerian: ... and the guy goes and throws stuff at them -- it was a trio of monkeys XD
Askerian: except they got it wrong and called it a kawarimi =_=
Askerian: nooo, the monkeys were always there, moron
Saro Lynne: *blinka*
Askerian: they just were henge'd into the trio
Saro Lynne: I see.
Saro Lynne: ...Henge doesn't really work that way either, though. XD
Saro Lynne: Oh well.
Askerian: or genjutsu maybe -- the monkeys were always there, they just looked different
Saro Lynne: Yeah.
Askerian: naruto henge'd gamabunta into kyuubi after all
Askerian: either way it wasn't a kawarimi, bitch
Askerian: well not action but whee the guy who was falsely imprisoned is ordered to commit seppuku. so dramatic
Saro Lynne: Hee.
Askerian: wait was he falsely imprisoned or acting on the orders of the main bad guy who was pretending to be a good guy @_@
Askerian: i actually can't tell just from the charadesign and genre cliches!! *is amazed*
Askerian: haha!!! i knew those three guards were suspicious
Askerian: *rolls*
Askerian: kakashi!!!
Saro Lynne: Hee!
Askerian: omg kakashi so cool
Saro Lynne: What did he do? XD
Askerian: he was just cool
Askerian: you know... standing, view from the side with rocks flying by in slow mo
Saro Lynne: XD
Askerian: HAH!!!! I KNEW IT. OMG NARUTO IS COOL.
Askerian: *amazed*
Askerian: naruto has a "save the day by being tricky" moment!!!!!!!
Askerian: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, seriously, he goes and does something neat, and saves the day in a way that isn't *gives a speach and totally overpowers his opponent, beating some sense into him*. For a filler thing, that's amazing.
Askerian: but. yeah. proportions. XD if i go back, i bet naruto will look like he's the same size as that guy he saves.
Askerian: heh, maybe it's a ninja trick
Askerian: hahaha omg neji is a smug bastard
Saro Lynne: *snerks*
Askerian: tenten: *slaps naruto for being all HAHA IM KEWL* è.é
Askerian: tenten: neji!! you knew it didn't you!!!
Askerian: neji: ... -_____________- heh. yeah. of course. I noticed a while ago. *buffs nails*
Askerian: OMG
Askerian: the enemy nin
Askerian: they have no village, they go around creating new jutsu and stealing some
Askerian: .. this guy already had earth and rock jutsu
Saro Lynne: Hm.
Askerian: ... and when he breaks his rocks in tiny little bits, he can do the desert coffin
Askerian: he's attempting to desert coffin kakashi O_O
Saro Lynne: Wait, what?
Askerian: he controls rocks
Askerian: made em into tiny bits -- harder to avoid
Askerian: but he still controls them
Saro Lynne: Yeah, but. Yeah... it seems odd to give someone else something like that, I guess.
Askerian: yeah
Askerian: but the way he says it, it kind of works. they go around, they see jutsu, they try to recreate them
Askerian: it's background info, not a big plot point, but it makes sense as he was already controlling rocks
Askerian: ... wow, the daimyo brat is giving me serious sasuke vibes
Askerian: family killed, wants his revenge -- has narrow black eyes and bangs à la chibisuke
Anyway, Muffy has a theory. The old scriptwriters are dead. Possibly of drug overdose (they were hitting em hard, after all).
Yeah, this makes sense, because, while this filler arc still isn't at the level I usually expect from the series, and while there were still some slight problems of characterization and "this jutsu doesn't work that way!!", it actually has a mildly complex plot (it's not "evil bad guy is being evil, naruto and compagny come in, kick ass and take names"; Naruto messes up in ways that aren'tsolely for comic relief, with possibility of serious consequences, and the characters' backstory isn't as horribly flat and cliche as it looks at the beginning.)
So yeah. It's not as good as the real thing, but... I'm waiting for the next ep anyway.
I think I've managed to pinpoint one thing that bothers me in the fillers, though. There's no real character interaction. The characters are reduced to a set of defining behaviors and then they're shoved into the plot -- it's like they don't touch each other, don't interact past the surface. There's no real depth to the interaction.
I'm especially disappointed at the lack of any significant Naruto/Neji exchange in this arc. =_=; Neji doesn't show admiration, or fondness, or even that much annoyance; he just acts out his script as if it doesn't matter really who he's with. There's not much of the sarcastic bastard he could be, or the philosophical guy he mostly is nowadays -- he's too smooth and bland.
Tenten is empty and there to be a token female character and that's all. She doesn't do anything noteworthy (apart from hitting naruto -- bully much? XD).
Naruto is, mostly, a big fanon cliche in the way he relates to other people -- calling everyone niichan is not a substitute for actually building friendly relationships with older males, and he never listens to anyone because he knows better -- it's like he doesn't even hear them saying no.
... ah well. It's not as if they can make the characters' relationships go forward anyway, what with this not actually being canon. and don't they forget it, bitches.
Or at least it's vaguely tolerable. When it started I thought it was predictable as fuck, but it's not as predictable as i thought. Besides the characters act a lot less stupid than they did in the previous arc. (re: forgetting to check that an enemy is dead, for example)

Naruto canon is really more about the characters than the plot- note the extremely low character death rate, considering that it's about ninja, which I figure is because Kishimoto prefers to develop his characters rather than kill them off- whereas the fillers are more about plot than character. The best filler we've had so far (in my opinion, at least) was the Bikouchuu arc, which had both an interesting plot and character development (seeing Hinata kick mega ass was SO SATISFYING, particularly since my single biggest complaint about canon is that Kishimoto doesn't give the women their fair share of chances to shine- he's improving, but Tsunade beating Orochimaru was the first time in the series a kunoichi defeats a male ninja in combat- and indeed I think it was the only instance of a female ninja defeating a male one before the timeskip- after the timeskip I know nothing)
Naruto's characterization in the fillers is pretty bad, yeah- filler Naruto is like a throwback to the beginning of the series when he was a total idiot, before he gradually wised up.

i'll have to check which ep it starts at, though, if you need it. Naruto's characterisation bugs me a bit, but it's not as blatant as it is in other filler eps.
I agree with you on the bug arc; it was the best by far. Except for all that "WHAT'S THAT? YOU WANT YOUR SHIPS TO STAY FANON? HERE, HAVE SOME MORE NARUHINA CUTENESS. ARENT THEY CUTE? YES THEY ARE. EVERYONE LOVES NARUHINA. WHAT, NOT CANON YOU SAY? BUT NARUTO STILL DOESN'T KNOW SO IT'S ALRIGHT-- AWW HE'S HOLDING HER. LOOK, AIN'T THEM SO CUTE." And sailormoon!hinata. Apart from that it was neat -- but this one is not only not so bad, but the main theme is a lot more ninja-y than looking for bugs. XD (so far i still like the bugs one better, but that might still change)

The manga is plot dense, pretty and not full of bland-ass characters being mis-represented by writers fucking about until they get a real plot back.
They NEVER should have released the anime so soon. Of course they caught up to the manga and of course now they're fucked and making a mockery of a good series with season upon season of filler.
Some of these filler eps, they're worth giggling at, but when I know what they're not showing from being caught up on the manga and how nice and plot dense this show could be if they'd let the manga get further ahead first, it makes me cry. ;_;
*huggles her manga scanlations*
(And while I think of it, anyone here know where the hell the Inane translators went to? They've dropped off the face of the planet for about the last seven chapters at NarutoFan.com... >_> It's like a conspiracy or something)

I can SO TOTALLY pretent these chapters don't exist. Fanfic and scanlations keep me purring-happy.

People on Narutofan have been translating chapters as they can but the english in the ones I've downloaded is terrible, hardly understandable, so I've been waiting for Inane or Shannaro to get back onto the bandwagon.
Hopefully the end of the holidays will bring things back around, maybe everyone in the groups is just too busy? *shrug*

I'm spoiled cause I started reading scanlations when Shonen Jump was only a little ways in. I devoured them like crazy and caught myself up to the japanese releases inside of a month or so. And then it was like 'ARGH!'. *sigh*
Oh well, such is the price of fandom.

I do hope they put in some episodes about Naruto's training with Jiraiya, and more of Sakura's training with Tsunade.
And the end of this latest episode = OMGWTF?!

There might be good moments, but i'm usually too busy cringing at the bad to enjoy them all that much. =_=; it reads like a mediocre fanfic and i'm too much of an elitist bitch to relax and look for the good.

Naruto Manga
OMG, totally unexpected twist. Can't wait until it's translated so i can read what they're saying. And you're right about the filler epps. I've been avoiding them completely and sticking with the manga, even though Sai irrataes me. Btw, if you have the time or are interested, i've started a Naruto fanfic. You don't have to look at it if you don't want, but it's at http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2712106/1/
