things that make teh asuka twitch.

-Bashing. (so cheap. So ridiculous.)

-Mary Sues (self explanatory), OCs who are so horribly, pointlessly evil that you know you're supposed to hate them and cheer when they're, unvariably, killed off/shown the error of their ways by a righteous Hero -- but you can only feel bored, because the puppetmaster's strings are fuckin' ropes, the kind you tie big boats with.

-People who use expressions or turns of phrases they think sound cool -- without knowing what they mean or the proper grammar to use them.

-A/Ns in the middle of a fic.

-blatant OOC -- that includes :
--Naruto wangsting over his poor, sad, horrible, painful, lonely life. Naruto does NOT wangst. Naruto doesn't stay down for long, people. naruto bounces back. always. Gimme a fucking good reason for him to finally break, and i'll believe it. But to top a demon possession and being hated and shunned by everyone, you're going to need to get up early.
--naruto thinking Sakura is a bitch. Sakura IS a bit of a bitch to him at first -- BUT HE DOESN'T THINK THAT. He thinks the sun shines out of her ass -- he's got a crush on her, okay? And she does get better.

-Sakura bashing.

-Hinata bashing.

-Sasuke bashing.

-ANY kind of bashing. Bashing is good for thirteen-year olds who can't conceive that the world is not only the people you like/want to fuck because they're SO cool, and the people you hate because they're horrible, evil, cruel, stupid people with NO redeeming qualities. There IS a middle ground. FIND IT.

-wangsting in general -- though the case of Sasuke wangsting is a bit more delicate. XD He DOES tend to go "woe is me" quite often, so it's not as OOC. What it is, is damn annoying when overdone.

-tons of other stuff that i'll get into later, because right now i have to finish my one-shot or Sol will probably thwap me. <_<;;;;;; *closes badfic and goes away quietly* edit: oh, and I really loathe author notes that are just as long as the chapter itself. No one cares about your cute, smartass discussions with your own muses, baby. I also really loathe it when you see that great fanfic summary -- it sounds original and interesting and maybe even sorta hot -- and then you click and it is teh suck. the idea is great -- but the writing and characterization and spelling and pacing and EVERYTHING suck, and you weep at the loss of a great idea -- and then you start plotting ways to do it, but do it BETTER -- except it would be sort of plagiarism, even if they obviously don't deserve that idea and god, do i sound conceited or what. XD

I agree with you so much.

Quit with the bashing. You don't like a character. Fine. I have characters I don't like too. But that's NOT a license to write them grotesquely OOC or have nasting things happen to them all the time. You think they're annoying. Okay! No problem with that. You want to take it out on the rest of us, big ass problem.

YOU! Write me fic or I won't write YOU fic!

*GNAWS!*

--naruto thinking Sakura is a bitch. Sakura IS a bit of a bitch to him at first -- BUT HE DOESN'T THINK THAT. He thinks the sun shines out of her ass -- he's got a crush on her, okay?

*nod nod* And this is another good point -- that you need to have CONSISTANT CHARACTERIZATION, and not just feed your favorite characters lines out of your own mouth. Have them say what THEY'D say, not necessarily what YOU'D say, even if they might say stuff you don't agree with.

big fat word to all of that, especially Naruto wangst and ANs in the middle of a fic.

Replies to comments that take up more space than the actual chapter.

In total agreement! I also hate, and nearly always refuse to even try a fic with "My first fic!!1one!!1 Please R&R(Read and Review!) I know its crappy but pls!!!one"

... I swear I've read a summary just like that. Oh! And give warnings! Tell the readers if there is mpreg, het, and homo pairings! I like to know rather than be disappointed later because it sure looked like Naruto was going to jump Neji for the first three chapters.

And, guh.. why do so many make Sakura and/or Ino a super!bitch? And Hinata is always shafted when it comes to her stuttering. (I personally think it's just nerves. And she's not half as bad as some authors try to make her!)

/Hinata is always shafted when it comes to her stuttering. (I personally think it's just nerves. And she's not half as bad as some authors try to make her!)/

Dammit yes!!!

Hinata is not some fragile china doll or infantile child; she maybe be shy and lackong in confidence, but she the daughter of an ancient and noble house, trained in their deadly arts and proficent in the arts of healing.

She is intelligent, intutive, gracious, and kind and will become what she was born to be, whether her father thinks it or not.

She is afterall the daughter of the sun.

I third this. With a passion. God, I hate it when they have her stutter and stammer through every single world. She doesn't, really. To my ears, at least, it sounds less like a stutter and more like someone who has trouble talking because of nerves. A little stammering. A LOT of pauses.

She deserves more credit, damn it.

*mutters about serving tea*

[identity profile] questofdreams.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
ah, I fourth this! I adore Hinata's character. The fierceness she displayed in her fight with Neji proved that she was much much more than just a shy little girl. I can't stand fics that can't even have her produce a coherent sentence without excessive stuttering.

And the tea-serving XD...um yeah. Hinata, where's that fierce spirit gone? Let it loose, honey!

And the character bashing...yes! god, it's irritating. I like all the characters in their own way and I can't see how anyone could *hate* an imaginary character!! They're not real, pple! .... uh yeah.

[identity profile] rianax.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
/And the tea-serving XD...um yeah. Hinata, where's that fierce spirit gone? Let it loose, honey!/

I actually enjoyed seeing Hinata serve the tea, she demonstrate grace, poise, and confidence when she interact with her father, sister, and cousin.

She will never be a fire eater like her sister, but her strength will come in softly in enduring darkness and despair with loss of faith or hope. Like water, she may reflect the color that surround her, but gradually she will make that her own. Water overcomes rock not by force of arms but persistence of will.

[identity profile] ketsuke.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Shall we start a Hinata fan club? She really is so much stronger than a lot of people want to give her credit for.

[identity profile] rianax.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
I think she has a fanclub, fanlistings, and fansites. We must honor her actual characteriztion and protest the wimpette version so many try to put off on us.

[identity profile] questofdreams.livejournal.com 2005-03-28 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
wow...that was so pretty. hehehe...you're so right. She's awesome. (not as eloquent as you, unfortunately =P)

Now, while I'm not very big in the Fanfic crowd, I've been doing serious Board-Based RPing for years, and it's interesting some of the differences and similarities that crop up.

In RPing, the character is generally going to at least be something like you, unless you feel like doing something that takes actual effort (Gasp! An RPer putting EFFORT into thier work?) and a degree of skill (Gasp, again! An RPer with SKILL in serious WRITING?). Granted, the best roleplayer in the world doesn't bother making characters like him/herself, because there's no point - I mean, really, where's the fun in doing something you're already familiar with? - but... No matter who the character is, it's only good roleplaying/writing is the character(s) are consistent.

In most RPing, a character that's taken from another source is considered to be not just tacky, but horribly low. This is because it's so bloody easy to take a character from, say, an anime, and just play it yourself. However... When one thinks about it, while it's easy to play a character from somewhere else, playing it RIGHT is another issue entirely.

Roleplayers have to be creative first, then true to the characters. Fanfic authors have to be true to the characters first, THEN creative. It's an interesting contrast, and the writing process is intrigueing.

Various issues with Ettiquete also factor in. OOC, for RPers, is speaking out of context of the story, specifically. Characters acting uncharacteristic is just considered bad RPing. -laughs- Or good, if there's proper reason for it, just like any of us could act uncharacteristically for the right reasons. The fact that Fanfic writers already have characters that they have to stick to (and understand first) makes that process a bit more difficult, as well as making it harder to bring about plot twists. In addition, suspense would be a bit harder to put together, if you have to warm the readers of certain things.

Hm. I'm starting to ramble a bit, as my concentration's fragmented into a million pieces.

I'm sure I've made some sort of point.

And another thing..

-People who use expressions or turns of phrases they think sound cool -- without knowing what they mean or the proper grammar to use them.

This does include using phrases like "burning with love" when it follows "he thrusts deep into me," yes? And.. *shudder* "he came in buckets" used.. in a sex scene.

My brain is still trying to reboot.

Nicely put. ^_^ Though on RARE occassion, I'll disagree with your edit... I love Mel & C's author notes, which are as long or longer than many fic chapters out there. Of course, the actual STORY chapters are much longer still, so maybe that makes up for it. Or maybe it's just because they're good enough writers to make it interesting. ^_^

I was just thinking of them, myself. There's always an exception to the rule. X3

WORD. It's doubly irritating because if you rescue every abused storyline, you won't have time for your own ideas. And yet... there's a good fic in there just crying to get out.

*goes away to quietly weep over murdered stories*

Ohdamn that's so true x.x;;; and remind me not to get on you bad side...*cower*

One thing that totally turns me off to a fic is when the char is way waaaay off in their personality. It's like '>.o ok yeah that would never happen stfu >.<' I wonder what fic/author set you off for this? *nuzzles neck*
