Thank me, you know you want to.
This time on "Gboy and Ggirl break up so the boylove can happen" scenarios. Well, on one thing that happens too often with these scenarios.
The Gboy and the Ggirl were together because 1) the girl pleaded them to try and/or 2) they thought they didn't have a chance with Love Interest(tm). (never because he honestly loves her and she honestly loves him back)
So they get together. Often, the Gboy pines for LI(tm) even though he's with his gal who, understandably, chafes at being second best. Often, he's only with her by duty (Heero has to protect/keep Relena sane, Duo knocked Hilde up while drunk or other reasons of the kind) but tries his best to enjoy not being with his LI. Sometimes, he's truly in Forever Luuuurve. Or thinks so.
Then they break up.
Often enough, because the Ggirl had changed into Teh Evul Biatch From HELL (ohno, poor gboy is HEARTBROKEN!! quick!! everyone jumps on the Sexual Healing bandwagon!! Mansmut Power!! XD). Or sometimes just because she realized that he doesn't really care about her the way she wants to (which is a bit better, because i don't like bastardization) and/or herself falls for someone else (the bitch, how dare she).
Why isn't it more often SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY FALL OUT OF LOVE? It can happen, goddammit. And JUST BECAUSE THEY TRUELOVE SOMEONE ELSE DOESNT MEAN THEY NEVER REALLY LOVED THE FIRST ONE. Argh.
This is my new pet peeve. Just because they're now in love with someone else doesn't mean the first relationship had to be less meaningful or powerful.
IMHO, if you need to make the feelings in the first relationship weaker just to make it look like the second relationship is stronger, then often, either it looks lazy or the easy way out, or even worse, It Doesn't Work. It's just a milder form of the "If You Need To Kill Or Bastardize Every Other Possible Love Interest To Make Your Pairing Work, Then IT DOESN'T WORK" rule.
disclaimer: I'm not saying every fic made with that formula sucks donkey cocks. I'm saying that I'm tired of reading tons of fics with the same exact premises. Sometimes people can break up and stay on good terms, and not only the people who were just friends trying something new. u_u;;
This is only a minor pet peeve, though; it's not going to make me stop reading a fic on its own. If the fic is good despite that, I'll keep reading; so long as it's described believably it's okay. But when people don't work at the scenario, as if pulling one out of a hat full of used romance novel plotlines... then it's just yet another nail in the coffin. u_u;;
One fic that I really loved, for example, even though it did get Hilde with Duo to get a kid just to kill her off later, was Lasha Lee's arc; Duo got with Heero, and loved Heero, but he honestly loved Hilde too. He still loves her, even though she's dead. She doesn't disappear from his heart because he's got someone new. Duo's still thinking of her, even years after.
(of course it helps that Lasha chose to free the way for Heero by killing Hilde off rather than breaking them up nastily, but-- ah heck. I liked that Hilde was still present, and not bastardized in any way. So this fic is at least mildly relevant to my rant XD)

It's a very well-known fandom staple, one which I am sure I have abused. XP I don't really like to bastardize so much (except in farce or parody or if I'm writing something insane), but if I see this sort of thing, I tend to not read it unless it's well done. And this happens, IIRC, mostly in 1x2x1 fics.
Also... why the hell does Duo ALWAYS knock up Hilde?! Having been in OZ, i.e. military, you'd think she'd learn to use birth control. /ranty

Uhhhm. comment écrire. Bonne question. Des fois c'est juste une question: qu'est-ce qui se passerait si...? je change un élément et j'essaye de décider ce qui se passerait, comment les persos réagiraient, et puis j'écris à partir de là. Des fois j'ai une idée de scène et j'écris le fic autour, comment et pourquoi ils en sont arrivés là. Je sais pas comment expliquer, ca m'est venu à force d'essayer je suppose ~_~;;;
les trous dans le scénar, faut trouver un moyen de changer les choses qui fait qu'ils arrivent pas, ou donner une explication qui fait que ce qui devrait pas être faisable l'est (mais si c'est vraiment trop gros, ca marche pas)
en bref, j'en sais rien du tout, ya pas vraimen de formule. x_x

Yes, anyway, I totally and completely agree to your rant Asuka-sama. I dont like the bastardization of ANY character, whether or not they deserve it, and (personally) I think it's tactless and distasteful. However...
Once in a while it's liveable. If it's hinted at, then it's usually not any of what I said above... but when an author obviously bashes another character just for the sake of the couple, I not only find the couple hard to beleive, but I also start to doubt the authors credibility. If you need to turn a character into a complete... whats the word... dissapointment(?) to the character's true nature, then what's the point in writing fanfiction? Isn't the point of fanfiction to stay IN character and deliver a plausible story to please a wide-spread fanbase?
...I'm starting to rant now too. ^^;; sorry...
Yes, anyway, I'm regretful to say that I will turn a blind eye to it... but I have to agree, I'm getting quite sick of it as well.

Though now I am more of a 1xR fan there was a time when I used to adore 1x2 just as much, so I can see both POVs from those that like 1xR and 1x2. IMHO maybe that's why I can see compatibilities between 1xR and 1x2 that could or couldn't extend into a long term relationship depending on how one writes it. I also like the 2xR aspect seeing plenty of compatibilities between them as well, so I guess that's also why I'm attracted to 1xRx2 fics, because when you take out the bashing, bitterness and prejudice and bring all three of them together they can play so well off of one another and make a really good dynamic. But because most people have such strong preferences for either 1xR or 1x2 those fics rarely happen.
I read a het fic a similar to the one you just described, but it was ages ago, so I don't remember the title or author, but it was a 1xR 2xR. Heero is killed and Duo honors his last request to take care of Relena. So he becomes her bodyguard and during the course of two years he ends up falling in love with her. He's apprehensive though about approaching his best friends wife, and isn't sure how she feels (of course Relena has fallen for Duo, but feels she'll betray Heero's memory if she acts on it). Anyway, things happen and Duo and Relena do end up together but Heero is still present in their minds, even afterward. It was a really nice fic and written very well.
I've actually have read a few fics where Heero treats Relena and Duo both poorly (or is indecisive) and they come together through the common thread of neglect from Heero and decide to say bye bye Heero and run off together.
Being a Relena fan I don't care for when she gets bashed, hence why I normally stay away from a lot of 1x2 fics. But in all honesty I have come across a few 1x2 that are very good fics and treat Relena with respect and dignity, not just kill her off, have her turn evil or leave her pining away and/or suicidal over a love she can't have. My Lord, Heero's not the only male in the show. And for those that like yuri, there's also a few girls she can choose from too.

Heero= abusive REALLY PISSES ME OFF. But that is quite a different rant altogether. ^^; Also, if they loved him, I like to think that just him being indecisive wouldn't be enough to make them get tired of him and leave. ;_; Hell, if they grow closer because of that, then they should just propose a threesome so he doesn't need to choose. I hate it when he's left behind too. T_T
I actually read a 5xR that I loved, and I guess if written well, it CAN work. Weirdly, I can't see 4xR as anything else than a practical, political thing that would eventually turn into tenderness; maybe it's because most of the time they're so controlled and polite, I can't see passion between them. As for 3xR... O_o; uhm. They're, like, on entirely different planets.
6xR is... no for a lot of reasons. XD 13xR. hmmmm. They're on opposite ends of the political spectrum. XD that and Une would murder Relena in her sleep.

I've wrote a lot of GW fanfiction from 'early 99-late '00 then took a long hiatus and at the end of '02 I started writing again. I started out not caring for Relena but then turned into a major fan because of all the flack her character received, plus I examined her character for myself and made up my own mind about why I liked her or disliked her, so now, I am a Relena fan. Though I mostly stick to 1xR, I've written fics with Relena paired with every male cast member (well except for Zechs) just to see if I could pull off the compatibility factor.
Speaking of 4xR. a long while ago, I did write a 1xR 3x4x3 4xR 3xR 1x3x1 fic once. The premise being Relena and Quatre getting married for political reasons and how it effected them and their "lovers" and how secrets each one had kept about their pasts also affected their present lives and changed the course of everything they thought would happen.
I really don't talk about things I've written, simply because I don't consider myself that great of a writer, plus most of my stuff was written quite a long while ago, and my writing is somewhat different then it was back then. I think to make up for her being bashed, I tended to pamper Relena a lot in my earlier works, where now I try to write her as more of rounded individual.
