Fandom Rants! yes!!
These rants weren't provoked by anything in particular. I just wanted to write my opinions down for no reason other than I felt like it. You're allowed to disagree, but if you want to tell me that I'm wrong, be prepared to tell me WHY.
Stop thinking that Relena-bashing fanfics are an accurate portrayal of her personality, people. Bashing for fun is... well, fun. Bashing for hate is ridiculous. I like to poke fun at Relena (at Zechs and Treize too) sometimes, but that doesn't mean that I believe she's really a psycho stalker bitch from hell. She has annoying sides, and every time I watch GW again there are moments when I want to slap her, but she also has good sides. She's nice and caring and unbelievably courageous.[/rant]
I don't care if you hate Relena or Hilde, if that happens around the end of the series, Heero and Duo DON'T.
Just fucking LOOK at that helmet-touching moment, guys. I don't believe that 1xR could work in the long run for a ton of reasons, but it doesn't mean that there's NOTHING between Heero and Relena. Even if it's not romantic love, it's respect on both sides, and protectiveness from Heero. Heero WANTS TO PROTECT RELENA. At that precise moment in the series, he doesn't feel like he has to.
Maybe after the series that can change, I don't deny it. Fics that happen after the series where Heero feels that he needs to protect her but doesn't want to because her more stalkerish side is getting too much can be totally in character. But there always will be that moment where they were helmet to helmet, almost forehead to forehead, and in that moment, he didn't hate her, didn't despise her. So when I see a fic where Heero has always hated her for her clinginess and never thought there was anything to redeem her at all... urgh. That may be what YOU think, but that's not what Heero thinks.
As for Duo thinking Hilde is nothing but a clingy bitch... eh? O_o He likes her! He takes care of her! He protects her all the friggin time!! He's all "I'm a big strong male and you go cook for me now" around her! I didn't see him trying to run away. I don't deny that Hilde latches onto his ideas a bit fast, but I think that was in part because they didn't take the time to develop her character so much, sadly (the other part being that, fuck, he's HOT. I would so run after him too. You can't blame Hilde for wanting to be on Duo's good side). He's certainly not running away from her. He's a big bad Gundam pilot, and she's not a Peacecraft. She had no way to run after him like Relena followed Heero. If he wanted to ditch her, he would have done so. He also never seemed to worry that she would change sides again and betray him.
I see their relationship as I see Catherine and Trowa's, like adopted siblings, but there's no denying that even though Duo doesn't seem to make Hilde the pillar of his strength like Hilde makes him the stone on which to rebuild her convictions, there is a connection. I can see how it could go bad, like I can see how Heero and Relena's connection could go sour too, but... What's with the demonization? People can grow apart from each other or even have bad arguments without one of them being a total monster. Most of the time it takes two people to make or break a relationship.
I'm not saying that writing Relena or Hilde as too jealous and possessive is obligatorily OOC, but... Are only cold, controlling, perpetually hurtful monsters allowed to feel jealous, possessive of someone they love, scared of being abandoned?[/subrant]
I won't get into the "fic dealing with realistic rape issues" versus "rape for the sake of cheap angst" topic. Rape is a topic like anything else, from cars to pets to the nightmares someone who has killed hundreds can have. It's like everything else; you write it well or you don't. If it's well-written I'll read it. What I won't read (unless they're bloody EXCELLENT) is fics who take for granted that Nanashi was passed around like a particularly good joint at a frat party. (when these painful memories are just so he can break down in ukeish sobs and Quatre/Heero/Duo have to comfort him and give him some Sexual Healing, I have a tendency to print the fic just so I can shred it in little bits.)
I do not agree to the theory that trowa was the slut of the merc unit, and this for three reasons:
1) you do not hurt so bad and so regularly someone who repairs your mobile suit, who knows how to pilot a mobile suit himself and whom you're going to turn your back on, maybe even depend on to save your sorry skin, during a battle,
2) Trowa isn't very communicative with words BUT isn't afraid of people -- which he would be if he had been repeatedly raped by a dozen or more men. He would be traumatized. Can you see the scientists giving him a gundam if the very sight of men in military fatigues would make him freeze in fear or have a flashback? (he's not afraid of quatre or rashid or the ringmaster either, and the last two are tall, dark-looking men. He infiltrates bases full with soldiers with ease. He's not scared of them either.) Rape victims typically either get very touchy feely or avoid social interaction. Trowa may not talk a lot, but he was the one who went and hid in a freaking CIRCUS, with tons of (probably very demonstrative) people, where he could have done like the other pilots did and deal alone.
3) my main reason: contrary to what people see in fanfics, even if they have nothing else to screw, very few men will turn to pedophilia, and not a lot more toward other men. Add to that the protectiveness shown by the chief of the unit toward Nanashi during his episode zero and I REALLY doubt anything could have happened to him. I can accept the theory that there was ONE pedophile in the unit. Maybe two. It's plausible after all. But not ALL of them. That would be a surprising coincidence... or did they all join the unit because they were offered free boypussy with the pay? XP
It's possible that Trowa was molested during his childhood. He's wary of people enough for that. But I really don't believe that all his male acquaintances fucked him on a regular basis. He would be a lot more fucked up than he already is.[/rant the third]

Yes. Thank you! The captain of that group was clearly protective of him. Yes, he was a bit detached, but he did have concern for Trowa and was kind to him. Even in the scene where Trowa killed the traitors in their unit, the Captain's reaction was more one of a shocked father figure surprised by what the boy was capable of.

yeah, it shows that he cared for the kid, even though as a captain he didn't really know how to be all cuddly and gentle. He was like odin. He wasn't equipped to be the doting daddy, didn't mean he couldn't give a damn. T_T

Exactly! It's not like he didn't have a whole squadron of soldiers to manage or anything! *rolls eyes* You could make the argument that he was at least as good a father, if not better, than Quatre's. He was willing to give Trowa guidance and look out for him, but not make a bunch of demands on him outside of pulling his weight in the unit. Quatre's father was a lot harder on Quatre.

*nodnod* You'd think she'd be a much easier target, at the very least. Plus, I'm not sure I completely buy into the argument that there were no adult women anywhere in the group of mercenaries. I mean, the rebel groups had women soldiers, OZ had women soldiers, why would this group be men only?

Good points, all. I, too, wanted to give Relena a good bitch slap from time to time throughout the series, but I try not to let it influence her character in what I write, because, as you said:
