Having them set up a match themselves in order to "finally see which one of us is best" and/or "express the bond of our weird rival/friendship thing via fighting for shits and giggles without the pressure of our various causes distracting us from the joy of the fight!" only works at/near the end of a season if not the whole series.
You know, when they would reasonably be able to not think about their various causes.
Heero at that point was pretty much at a loss for what to do with his life, so him agreeing to the match sorta makes sense, but Zechs? Not even a little bit.
