It sounds like you're not really looking forward to NaNo, in which case, don't push yourself to do something you won't enjoy. It's always sounded to me like a month set aside to give impetus to people who keep finding excuses not to write the rest of the year. You're creative all the time, so no worries there.
I'm very fond of the mermaids, but I can see where you've sort of written yourself into a corner, and all the plot bits waiting in the wings are getting in the way of character development and non-scripted interaction (I guess? Maybe it's just my interpretation). Getting rid of particularly strangly elements might help, or just letting it sit for a while and coming back to it later with fresh eyes, so you can see what's going on when you're not so involved. (Actually, that applies to any story.)
Basically, do whatever you want to do. If you want to write, write. If you don't want to, don't. But don't feel you have to commit to anything, just because it's November.
