... oh god. Okay, now I really do ship it. Whoa.

You know what they reminded me of, in terms of personality and facial expressions? Sasuke and Naruto, just with the story roles reversed. Sasuke/Danzou was angry, with things to prove to his family and reporting that need onto his friend, and afraid to die too; naruto/hiruzen was all confident/open/hokage-to-be and... I don't really know how to explain but that's really how it pings me. It's like an AU where Sasuke wasn't an Uchiha, or maybe the Uchiha wasn't that big and reviled a clan, and Naruto was never an outcast.

13. And we switch to Sakura's team! In one hand I've wanted to see them for a while. In the other hand AAA NO YOUNG DANZOU
Lee: don't you think you should tell naruto the truth?
Sakura: no way, i can't D:
Kiba: you underestimate Naruto -- huh?

14. Sakura: EVERYONE STOP

... frrrgh. In one hand her developing habit of misdirecting comrades all the time is getting troublesome, in the other hand i'm so pissed at Sai -- but mostly kishimoto -- for the "oh no, she's going to DO something and be proactive, I can't let her make an active mistake and take the fallout like a man, I and Kakashi have to lecture her so she can be chastised into becoming good and obedient again!" I mean okay she was about to do something kind of foolish, but you never see this kind of plot for the guys. The guys are more likely to have someone standing by going "I know he'll fail but we still have to let him try and fail on his own." But not Sakura, no. She's got tits.

16. Sai: i'm not letting anyone go. There's no way we can win.
Sakura: *puts her gloves on* "Sai, i'm only going to say this once... get out of my way!"

OKAY! Conclusions:
-Karin is still alive.
-I really don't like the subtext on Sakura's handling of the situation. Kishi, damn you, she better get to do awesome stuff. Stop cockblocking her all the time.
-Sasuke standing with Madara like this last panel? "look look he's become evil just like madara now" symbolism. He couldn't stand him just before this arc, on the way TO the summit, and now he's all "yay let's work in tandem". Uh huh. XD
-HAH Madara didn't get Shisui's eye after all. >E
-... DANZOU WAS HOT AND OH GOD I SHIP IT.

Yeah, but when boys are stupid, you laugh a little and then "ahh, boys will be boys" and chalk ut up to experience. Girls are apparently supposed to stand back and watch, and maybe learn that way. It's so frustrating.

.... I've been kind of avoiding Naruto recently, but this actually pulls my interest in. You can see the Frog-snake-slug pattern emerging with Danzo as Snake and Sarutobi as Frog. Not sure from your summary if a slugs emerged or not. but it makes me want to go check - which makes me happy. =D

Nah, it was mostly a binary interaction with the other characters there to provide background noise. No Slug there, alas.

I feel like I owe you an apology for insisting Sasuke wasn't THAT bad last chapter... this was just COLD.

Definitely got into the Danzou/Sarutobi and Sasuke/Naruto parallels... wonder how far they will extend (Sasuke fails to reach his goals as Naruto becomes Hokage).

Very interesting Danzou says he never became Hokage, because he did go to the Kage Council as the Hokage.

I wonder how many Danzou/Sarutobi shippers have been created? Though I do disagree- Sarutobi was pretty cute in a Naruto-fashion (though Homura gets my vote for stud of Team Nidaime).

And... I wonder if Kagami's eyes ended up on Danzou's arms?

I liked that Danzou didn't consider what he did get to be the same as truly being elected Hokage. Maybe anything but being made Hiruzen's successor by his own hands would have not been acknowledgement enough.

Sarutobi was cute in a "this guy is friendly and would stand by me" fashion -- trust-inspiring! but I didn't find him all that hot. Big nose! XD

I never seem to be right with this manga. My track record is much, much better for shoujo series.

I do think we're missing a part of the story with the Sandaime's elevation - we're told that Danzou fought him, so I guess he goes against Nidaime's expressed wishes?

Sarutobi would be MUCH better at cuddling.

And I find it fascinating Danzou had an Uchiha teammate - it somehow makes his eye thefts that much more horrifying...

I get the feeling that Sakura's a little distracted, and that's also why she tried ditching the team. Too much stressful stuff going on at once. (Lol, at least she didn't just faint like Naruto did. Not that I'm complaining about that, I liked it.)

I don't know whether specifically Sasuke meant not to kill her or whether he doesn't care either way, but she can't be dead because 1) no flashback and 2) no closeup on her horrific wound. After she was thrown aside she was given zero attention. Considering that Danzou got a whole flashback and a last counterattack out of the deal and HE was hit in the heart, that seems really unlikely. No one can die without a lot of attention in this story, and she just wasn't given enough.

... Maybe Sakura is going to find her and fix her before she can kick the bucket. I dunno.

You're comparing someone who appeared in one or two chapters tops and didn't even get a full fight with someone who's been around a couple years. Sad as it is, Yugito was barely a name and a power; lots of other background nins were killed that way.

Even though it took his death to do it (like Itachi) I'm glad we weren't given an opportunity to understand his motives until the end. I mean, it means he's designed to be hated and appear a villain until the penultimate moment, but I love the paradigm shift, I really do.

I also feel the chapter should have been called 'Sasuke's death' >:(

Where's Naruto? Seriously, last we saw he was having an anxiety attack. Obviously Kakashi felt it was more important to chase Sakura.

I don't think he's less of a "villain" now than he ever was. He still planned to let Pain destroy half the village so he could get the other half to look to him as a savior, and he still wanted to use Naruto as a weapon, and he still killed that frog, and he still etcetera. He always presented it like "it must be done if we want Konoha to be saved", which was a good, altruistic motive (...there's a saying about that and the road to hell), though we always knew it was also because he had a desire to be Hokage for himself as well. Now we know that desire was because he wanted to be acknowledged as Hiruzen's equal, and that makes him more sympathetic, but that doesn't totally change the interpretation on his previous actions like Itachi and the real goal of the Uchiha reveal changed the massacre and Itachi's actions.

Le gasp! Hiruzen = 3rd Hokage ... Hey cool we finally know his NAME!

Having fun trying to imagine Danzou's and Saturobi's EPIC ~~LOVE~~ RIVALRY. And I kind of like Saturobi's young face. I dunno, it seems a nice sort of face. Danzou's hot, but he's still not as hot as Minato.

...And that reminds me I never quite found any good Minato fic, damn it.

Maybe it's easier to take whatever happens in Naruto if we just view it as a giant pool of shipping fodder that Kishi stirs at will.

There is probably an essay in this topic (or about a billion), but.. as much as it sucks and will always suck, I think I understand the whole "keeping the girls from doing stuff" angle. I think it basically boils down to guys being replaceable sperm banks and the women? Not so much replaceable. M-preg fics aside, they're the ones who keep the population up. And ninja die. A lot. Sometimes more than once. Keeping the women alive is more important because of that.

Sucks hairy balls? Hell yes. But, you know, I don't think it has to do with the guys trying to say "this is MAN work, go back to the kitchen, bitch*." Oddly enough, I think it's more along the same lines as what Nidaime said when he decided he'd be the decoy. It's their job to make sure there are more young ninja. It's their job to help protect those younger people, even if the way they protect them is different.

Then again, I've always been too much of a hopeful optimistic :P

Stuff I agree on: Danzou being hot, SHIP IT LIKE WHOA. AND WE LEARN THE SANDAIME'S FIRST NAME. You have no idea how happy that made me. He was Sarutobi for too damn long.

Karin, I'm on the fence with. All I know is that, when Sasuke said what he said I just went "You bastard -_-;"

*This is a bit of an inside joke on my part. My dad's side of the family is raised in the Old Ways. Any guy who does dishes, cooks, does chores that doesn't involve repairing things and other stereotypical manly work has actually gotten the title of "Kitchen Bitch."

It's an awesome justification for fanfic, but in canon it has zero hint toward it and Kishi doesn't look like he gave his world setting such deep thoughts. It's an attitude that's prevalent in the great majority of manga whether shounen or shoujo, which stems from Japanese attitudes. I'd think it's more likely it's either a well entrenched manga trope Kishi doesn't feel like challenging, or being raised in that culture and having had no reason to take it to heart, doesn't even notice what he's doing or why it would be bad for his female characters. He's aiming his manga at 13 year old boys anyway, he's got no reason to add subtle societal twists so the attitude will be justified instead of just ignored as status quo.

For a mangaka he's not horrible with those issues (just look at friggin' Bleach), but I'm not gonna call him activately feminist either.

Well I knew about the attitude part. It wasn't long ago the same attitude was in America- hell, it still is just not as much as it had been. I guess I was trying to say it's not just that. That as much as it's annoying, it has its reasons. It's..

I'd actually like for Sakura to do it, but it's just not going to happen. If she even manages to get to fight with him, I can't see that fight ending any way except embarrassingly badly for her. She's good, but she was always defined as the 'normal' one of the group - whereas Sasuke and Naruto pretty much got a new power up in every fight.

Nobody except Naruto is ever going to stop Sasuke - that's Shonen Law.

I also wanna see some Sarutobi and Danzo fic, now. That sun-in-the-leaves and root-in-darkness metaphor is pretty powerful stuff. So that's where Root came from.

i agree, sarutobi and danzou made surprisingly cute kids. as far as sasuke is concerned, that boy better have some mind-screwing-ala-madara going on, because as it stands i want to smack him. and sai. sakura needs to do something!

One thing I got from this chapter on the 'mind-screwing-ala-Madara' came at the end when I was rereading. Namely when Danzo implemented his self-destruct seal thing and Madara yelled at Sasuke to watch out. Let me reiterate: the insane, seemingly immortal and all-powerful ninja bent on the destruction of Konoha, after setting Sasuke up to kill Danzo, went out of his way to see that Sasuke recognized the danger. In other words, Madara didn't want Sasuke to die.

With that disturbing realization in mind, I went back over the fight. Specifically, why was Madara there? (besides the lulz) My conclusion; he needed to make sure Sasuke didn't die. He needs him for something. The mindrape he's been putting Sasuke through since March of two years ago wasn't entirely for his own amusement, It definitely wasn't to bring down Danzo; Madara's demonstrated he could have done that in a heartbeat. He needs Sasuke for something further. He has *plans*. And when the man who claims his master plan is to put a genjutsu on the moon (which is actually some sort of tailed-beast) to make everyone on earth live in harmony... you need to start worrying.

Oh god..... Itachi must be rolling like an express wagon axle in his....grave? I hope he haunts his idiotic little brother for the rest of his (seemingly, likely short) life! Gaaarrrggghh! Sasuke drives me insane! I keep hoping that maybe, just maybe, he's got some sort of plan of his own to take out Madara, but he seems pretty content to trot (and rot) along in the madman's footsteps. So ... I believe it is time to throw him out of my dungeon. He'll have to work himself to death to get back in my good graces.

Karin = Alive ... maybe. She sure seemed to believe he intended to kill her too.

Youndger Danzo = cute ... maybe, but it doesn't improve my over all impression of him. Good looks are ok, but a good heart goes farther and lasts longer. And under all the terrible things he had to do Itachi had a very good heart. He wasn't as lovey-dovey as Naruto, no he was much more subtle in trying to show how he felt. And he was drool-worthy cute on top of it!

Sakura ... hmm. Well, I do think Kishi isn't really doing her character justice. I can see where Sakura might feel an overwhelming sense of responsibility regarding Sasuke, and her stubborn nature combines with her sense of "i need to be strong on my own" could bring about the situation where she would attempt to deal with Sasuke on her own, however, she's not stupid. She KNOWS most of what Sasuke's capable of. She'd have to be pretty desperate to pull what she was going to before Sai stopped her.

Back to Sasuke. I believe Susanoo may have some unforeseen mental side-effects. After he managed to call it up, he DID undergo a severe personality change. Maybe that's what Madara was hoping for? After all, Madara is HOW old? Who says he can't do Orochimaru's body switch jutsu? Ick ick ick .... Incest in the WEIRDEST sense.

This chapter weirded me out because Hiruzen is the name of a city really close to where I live... (Though considering Kishi's from the same place that I'm in now it could be a shout out to his homies kind of thing?) Bah, can't be sure until I see the kanji obvs, but that was my first thought. 'Uh... why is he talking about that town with awesome onsens?'

I tend to see versions of Naruto/Sasuke relationships everywhere in the manga. Not to mention teams that resemble team 7 in dynamics. Seriously, Kishimoto tends to revise the same basic paradigm, like he's slowly building up the whole "perfect partnership" thing that we all know will be going on between Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura by the end of this.

First, there was Gaara, showing us what a slightly more violent society (and a lack of Sasuke) could have made Naruto into. Naruto himself, dumb as he usually is, notices this (hence big dramatic mirror scenes).

Then came the Legendary Sannin, Team 7 prototype that failed enormously. Each Team 7 member became the pupil of one of these ninjas, and now, in order to surpass their masters, the pupils need to perfect their team relationship as well. Win the war their forefathers lost and all that.

Another obvious parallel is the Kakashi Gaiden story, because Kakashi himself identifies his young self with Sasuke. He's an emotionally broken Sasuke who's lost his Naruto, and then his Sakura. He actively tries to keep team 7 from going down that road to failure.

More recently, we had team PAIN, all obvious with a colored double-page showing their growth as equivalent to Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura. They're the ones that didn't fail in their relationships, but in real life. They were beaten down by reality.

There are tons of examples, but yeah, who wants to go trough all that.

Now, team 7 (and especially Naruto) relates to all these characters mostly by learning from their mistakes. Naruto and Sakura won't give up on Sasuke like Jirayia and Tsunade gave un on Orochimaru. Sasuke won't kill Naruto, no matter how he brags. Naruto won't go to extremes in his anger and desperation, like Pain did.

Anyways, sorry for the endless rant.

The pragmatist in me would like to note that if there ever was a time to try to beat down Sasuke, hitting him when he's barely got any chakra and reeling from his fight with a Hokage is a pretty damned good time to attack. Then again....Madara...
