I love her because she's funny, and she's brave, and a very decent person, and both badass normal and still-a-young-girl surrounded by monsters, and she could have had a normal life and been just fine in it but even when she's outnumbered and outgunned she still doesn't cower and doesn't wish she would have never met Kenshin and gotten dragged in. Also I can't get enough of her adopting Yahiko as her own, in that bickering-siblings, you're so annoying but I'll go to the end of the Earth for you way.

I love that she's soft-spoken and that she cares more about consensus than about getting her way, but that she has those things she will absolutely not give an inch on. And she won't turn rude and impolite and she won't lose her manners, and she won't yell and scream and suddenly grow out of her usual body language, but neither will she stand back. She proves that you don't need to stomp around and be loud and crude to have strength, that the two really aren't related at all. I also like how even though she can be strong, most of the time she chooses to be gentle instead.

In the beginning I love that she's snarky and manipulative and strong-willed in that elegant, high-class way, and that she always goes straight for the jugular (unless she feels like toying with her prey. *__*) In the end I love that she realizes the problem inherent in her morals, and she starts working for the "good" side... and she works for it using that exact same snark and mocking-prodding way. XD I love that turning good didn't dull her well-bred, well-mannered sharpness, or that tendency of immediately zeroing in on the weak point of her opponent's plan/character/argument. She didn't turn dully "i should love everyone! everyone is good!" and "aw, I have to use kid gloves now" and that's pretty neat.

She's flirty, giggly, extremely feminine, a healer, and while she can whack people with a long stick it's not really her best area.

She also lived in the slums from childhood and was tracked by the Turks and lost her mother pretty brutally, which makes her cheerful, optimistic attitude something that's born from willpower instead of empty-headed selective blindness. Look at the other slum inhabitants we see in the game -- most of them will be pessimistic, sour, and wary of strangers, with a downtrodden or aggressive body language.

She also threatened to chop this one guy's balls off, after she manipulated a guy into wearing a dress so they could infiltrate a bordello. As a pretty girl it was kind of risky, but she didn't hesitate. Woohoo sense of adventure!

I also love her for less explainable reasons, like the way she was smiling just before Sephiroth killed her, and the way the last FMV ends, with the Lifestream rising to save the whole planet. Every time we see her smiling face fading in and those last three notes of music, I get shivers. Massive love.

(also I love the way she works with Tifa, as a strong-willed healer to contrast Tifa's shyer, more self-doubt-prone hand-to-hand juggernaut. Mmh. *_*)

Tomoe is one of my favorite characters in Kenshin and I have a hard time explaining why, but I'll try.

What I like:
She's very quiet. She looks very emotionless. She's not. She's very proper, feminine, knows the feminine arts of flower arrangement and cuisine, the picture of the ideal Japanese wife of the time.

She loved her first husband/fiance so much she decided to avenge him, almost coldly. She would have done it, too.

Then slowly she falls in love again, with that guy who killed her first love and who she was only pretending to love. And she dies for him, and forgives him. It's tragic and beautiful and you'd think she was thrown under a bus to provide Kenshin with an angsty backstory (which, well, is kinda true XD) but it doesn't make her any weaker. At first sight she looks like she's made of ice -- doesn't care about anyone or anything, beautiful but so cold you can't touch. But there are feelings under there, which she doesn't express not because she doesn't care but because she just doesn't know how to communicate very well; and I love the quiet, understated way she showed them, at least before the end. She was a samurai's wife, and damn it that meant something.

I love that she could feel so much, and have so much trouble showing it. It made her otherwise remote behavior human.

Mai is one of those characters I should love a lot more than I do. She's deadpan snarky, which is always fun, and while not a bender she manages to be one of the gAang's serious opponents and to hold her own against magicked up heavy-hitters. She's badass. I approve, but for some reason she doesn't give me much gleelove pings either.

But when I really loved her -- that was at the Boiling rock, when she turns against her scary, scary friend to save a guy who dumped her. I really rooted for her then.

I love her deadpan snark and how like a proper soldier she always behaves, even when her commanding officer is anything but -- sometimes I get the impression she mostly does it in an underhanded way to tease Mal XD -- , and I love how utterly ruthless she is, and her platonic faithfulness for Mal -- she knows exactly what he's like and she'd follow him to hell anyway. Also, her falling for Wash was so... awwwwww. I loved that I gor to see a warrior woman who hadn't scared off all her potential mates because "she's trying to be a man!" and that she didn't have to make herself helpless and meek to find love.

1) In the privacy of her own head, she's utterly shameless. Outside of it, she's... usually shameless as well! i'm not sure if her blushy flirting is sincere (which is cute) or all an act designed to melt Sasuke's defenses (which is hilarious) but I love the switch anyway, which always cracks me up.

2) She's kinda creepy, both by her actions (yay let's drug people so we can molest someone undisturbed! Oh, and how sexy he is when he's bleeding and exhausted, let's dig through his garbage to steal that bloody, sweaty vest) and by her power -- the "bite me so I can heal you" is perhaps not her choice, but hella creepy... and hella sexy. REVERSE VAMPIRE FTW. In a meta point of view I like that she acts creepy, because oftentimes most female characters are either outspoken bitches, cold ice princesses, or shy girly girls -- stalker/rapist tendencies are usually not so blatantly acknowledged. And that biting thing is almost enough to make me forgive Kishi for the trend of making all his females into healers, and if he had to switch one of the girls out of the healer pool I hope it wouldn't be her, because it's kinda awesome. (ffs ino doesn't need to be a healer, for srs >__>)

3) I love love loooooove that she started out wanting sasuke's body and being orochimaru's loving lackey with all that implies about lack of regard for ethics and other people's lives and despising her other teammates, and she ended up risking her life to save them and sincerely worrying for sasuke and caring about him. It wasn't just a matter of "he's powerful and he bleeds sexy so i'm gonna hang around and try to get it on with him", but a matter of "what's happening to him? he's getting worse, that isn't right, is he alright?" and that was just awww.

Oh man I love Toph SO SO SO SO much. She makes me glee. I love how she pretended to be nice and meek and proper and helpless for her parents' sake as long as she could, but in the end even with the tournament as an outlet she couldn't, just *couldn't* stuff herself in that box anymore.

I love that she's kinda selfish and spoiled at times and that she grows over it, I love that she's rude and unwomanly as possible but still has some moments of wishing to be pretty and being a little insecure AND THEN BULLDOZERING PAST THAT SHIT RAAAAAA. I love her snarky constant jokes about her blindness, and her little crush on Sokka is SOCUTE, and I love how they remembered not to make her turn toward people she's talking to because, duh, blind, and just love.

She's a juggernaut of unstoppable kickassery, but she still has so many very human, imperfect sides, and that makes her even more epic.

I love how "girl next door" her personality is -- sweet and caring and hesitating and pessimistic at times and wishing not to impose, popular without especially trying to be (the best kind!)... and then all that contrasted by the drive she showed by training for years to master barehanded fighting techniques, and how far she would risk herself for the people she loves. In a way she's very ordinary-girl, but in another there is steel hidden in there somewhere.
