we now interrupt your regularly scheduled silly fandomness for a whiny bleeding-heart message...

[livejournal.com profile] projectdownload => Long story short, Erin needs money for her brain surgery, but her insurance won't pay. I've been reading back for pages and pages and pags, followed links on the personal journal and the project's site with the FAQ and whatnot, and if it's fake then it's a hella well-done fake. Fuck. I'm crying. It's so scary that it could happen to someone and nothing be done and she's fucking sitting on a bomb that could go off any time in her brain and they're all "blahblah no money blah." shit. fucking assholes.

(...)doctors weren't allowed to refuse treatment of a patient if they can't pay if the situation is life or death?
(...)The Chiari Malformation is not, at present time, a life-threatening condition. The cranial lesions, on the other hand, have been. (...)At that point in time, because of the bleeding, I wasn't considered a good surgical candidate. We tried (...list of things they tried...)the lesions have, thankfully, stopped bleeding and new lesion growth has significantly slowed down. This means I'm not considered "life-threatened" right now. There is, however, no guarantee that this situation will stay the same indefinitely. Now, if I were to stop the medications and the alternative medical practices, I could force a life or death situation in which surgery would be imminent. The downside to this is, if the lesions are massively bleeding again, the chances of me surviving the surgery would drastically reduce.

All she asks for is that people download a tiny text file once a day so that she reaches some crazy amount of downloads and megaUpload will hopefully shell out the promised $10000. (they better because otherwise. i don't know. they better.) So I subscribed to her yahoo group, selected "daily digest" and ta-dah, daily reminder to click one link and download one file and maybe it will help just a tiny bit.

That's if downloads from France count. ~__~

I'm sure lots of you will have seen the link, but hey, if it helps even a little bit, then that's good, right? right.

Where is she from? I know medical bills are tough (my baby sister had a brain tumor - my parents were lucky enough to have insurance). Do you know off the top of her head why her insurance won't pay?

random question of fail I know

I will have to go examine once I am like - almost awake.

Thank you for the links - I will definitely look into this.

D/ls from other countries BETTER count. I've been doing it for 4 days, I'd hate to find out it didn't count...

R.K. Milholland plugged this on Something*Positive; if he believes it and you believe it, it should be true. And if it's a hoax, a Google search will have your answers. (I think it's real, though.)

Holy crap... I fucking hate healthcare systems. It's not fair how people who need treatment but can't afford it slip through the cracks.

Thanks for posting this link, I'll check it out.

This is such pissy, bureaucratic BULLSHIT. I work in a hospital, and in my state it's illegal to refuse treatment, regardless of an individual's ability to pay. This kind of thing makes me...so, so angry. Something ought to be done about the people who make those kinds of laws in the first place. Because we have drunk bums coming in on ambulances, and none of them have jobs, much less insurance, and all they want is to use the ER to get some free food and a bed for a couple hours, and they know how to work the system because they KNOW that if they come in over the legal blood alcohol limit, we can't let them go until they're legally sober, and that's fine and dandy with the lawmakers, but one girl can't get fucking BRAIN SURGERY because she's not in the right demographic? That's fucked up.
