Crossing Barriers
Crossover Gundam WingGundam Seed. Its been 3 years since the Mariemaia Incident. Friends have drifted apart. But when need calls them back together, neither space or time stop will stop them.
Blahblahblah. Sounds bland, yes?
... I kind of spent all afternoon reading, grinning from ear to ear, fidgeting in my chair and bouncing my foot a mile a minute because of this fic. Not sure if I should thank the author or hate on her a bit. I was supposed to have left the GW fandom behind for good!
Anyway. It's a crossover between GW and Gseed, heavy on the GW side of things for at least 15 chapters. I don't think knowledge of Gseed is required to enjoy it either? I don't know, I saw both. It's got yaoi, but kind of subtle.
sgreer, you might want to read it. And if you do, try to ignore the infodumpy chunks of dialogue. Because. THE PLOT. Oh, god, the plot is niiice. Or should I say the plots? The story starts with Heero being disappeared, doing his own thing and the pilots trying to fit into a normal life... but J and G can see trouble brewing.
1) the OCs are awesome, fit seamlessly into the universe, and have their own personalities and goals; they're not coming across as sockpuppets whose only reason of being is to move the plot along.
2) There are many factions with many ideologies, some of them very dangerous, and political stuff. There is very shiny spies and moles and undercover stuff.
3) The plot isn't rushed to shove them through the wormhole as fast as possible, yet doesn't feel slow at all. *__*
4) There are many small but very well-thought-out worldbuilding details. (Like, for example, there's a discovery of a sinister thing that was done to the Gboys in the name of more efficient training, and it doesn't forget that Meiran was the originally designated pilot of Shenlong -- it's only a throwaway line but it made me so happy)
5) Action scenes: *^___^*
6) Attention paid to technical details, politics, military behavior -- not as pushed as it could be I guess? But enough to give a very good picture.
It's probably not perfect -- personally it hit lots of my buttons and I was so busy squeeing I probably missed things that might bother some people. (I think I'd love it with more character interaction, but the author's doing a difficult balancing act already -- so in the end it's plot-driven more than character-driven and it still made me happy, so.)
Bad things: The dialogue is a bit stiff at times, and oh, the infodumps. Why are they telling each other that? They both know already, don't they? D: It would work just as well to bring people up to speed if they just *thought* those things, but ehh. Not everyone can be a dialogue nuts, I guess. ._.;
Might-be bad things depending on POV:
-All the pilots are gay, but it's been given a reason that explains why such a statistically impossible thing happened that might or might not entirely satisfy the reader. The yaoi is very discreet most of the time anyway so it's easily ignorable.
-Heero crossdresses into a ZOMGHAWT girl. The "why" he does it is explained well enough for me, but it's still a been-DONE-before, "hay yaoi is shiny" thing, especially since he's, of course, OMG GORGEOUS. But since such "yay yaoi" moments are very rare, I'm choosing to be amused. ;p
In the first chapter I was all ready to add a minus note for low-grade Relena-bashing, but it's not actually the author speaking through the character! It's just the specific characters honestly thinking she's a fool because she's a too-optimistic innocent and they're war-minded old bastards and don't have the same point of view on things, and that actually added points to the fic. Yay for not everyone agreeing and everyone having their personal opinions!
... I'm sure I can find a lot of crit if I think hard enough, but right now I don't want to. I spent a great afternoon bouncing over that fic, and I don't want to deconstruct it just yet. When I was in it, I was totally swept along for the ride. I want to keep that for a little while.
... Of course, it's not complete. But there's at least 20 decent-sized chapters, so yay.
heero-muse. no. return to your box. In the box, I said. Don't make me make you -- hey, hey, no fair, noooo --oh holy hell. no. I said no, Heero.
... damn it.

-All the pilots are gay,
always bothers me so fucking much in GW fanfic that i don't know if i'd be able to get past it. but i'll bookmark it and give it a try anyway.
um, i guess you can leave the old fandoms, but the old fandoms never leave you? ha. XD i feel the same with this one. i even drew GW fanart a couple days ago, which i rarely do now.

I haven't done any GW fanart in years, but I've got a picture of the back of Heero's head that tickles my brain wanting to be drawn. I don't know why, but I have a thing for the whole eexposed nape/close-cropped hair/long bangs thing... >_>;;;;;;

It's like that boy you had a crush on in high school, only to randomly meet him on the street again years later and find that, why yes, he is still very attractive (and has only grown more intelligent over time).
You eventually keep on walking, but there is that sense of nostalgia and old-school affection.
Gundam Wing is special.
And thank you for that fic rec! I will merrily embrace my nostalgia now. ;D

^- THIS IS WHY I LOVE YOU, YOU FUNNY GIRL YOU! *LOVES ON YOU SO HARD*
Also, everything said by rurounitriv (http://askerian.livejournal.com/369930.html?thread=7843338#t7843338) and luel_exana (http://askerian.livejournal.com/369930.html?thread=7843594#t7843594) is very, very true and since it's already perfectly worded, I won't bother making any other comment about it. ^^

...damn. Yes, Crossing Barriers rocks supremely, as does her other Seed fic, Respect Between Enemies (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2712528/1/Respect_Between_Enemies), which is focused almost entirely on original characters... who are interesting and well developed and quite capable of carrying the story but so much a part of their environment that it couldn't have been written to go in any other setting... Yeah. Betanwerecat rocks.
I've also gotten something of the impression that, even if they're gay now, they might not be staying that way? My lack of that ZOMGHAWT reaction to yaoi kind of futzes my ability to predict that subplot, but the thing about Seedverse surgical medicine kind of suggests the possibility.
Now, if you'll 'scuse me, I'm gonna go squee some more over the fact that she got Kira's academic specialty right. ^_^

I don't know about them staying that way, the whole "implants" and "designated partners" thing seemed to me a slightly awkward way to get an OTPforevar effect on the sacro-sanct pairings of 1x2 and 3x4 without bothering with too much get-together interaction that would have slowed down the outside plot.
... I'd like them to keep having an open relationship, though. Even (and especially) if they could add Hilde as an option for Duo, and maybe Relena for Heero... and maybe Wufei could find himself a Seed girl? He reads so straight to me, poor guy. XD;
-- oh hell I know now what bugged me a little about how she kept saying Relena was naive and silly for wanting to destroy the gundams -- QUATRE was the one who had the idea first, and he supported it from start to finish. And he's a gundam pilot and a businessman... So if she's blind and silly, then so is he, and yet I don't remember his responsibility and support of the idea being mentioned all that much. Am I remembering wrong? Oh well, i'll mention it next chapter, maybe... *ponderyponder*

Oh - and if your're wandering about the GS story that I mentioned - The story I'm talking about is Crossfire and if you haven't read I highly recommend it can be found here:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2983199/1/Crossfire
Prior Warnings: It's a Kira/Athrun and Cagalli/Shin pairing fic so if you have issues with pairings other then canon it could turn you off the fic. The wonderful thing is the pairing are wonderully done, and the plot, and the Action, and...and...the damn suspense I just don't have words for them!
