Looking for a book...

I'm looking for the title and author of a book that was recced to me a while back by someone on my friendslist, through AIM. I thought I'd noted it down, but I can't find it.

It's sci-fi, set during a war? The person who recced it compared it to GW in some way, but with aliens. They linked me to a sample page, and there was a child hiding in an air vent while his (her?) town/village/space station is stormed and his family killed...? Also the book has a sequel or two, though I seem to remember they're not using the same main characters and are more parallelish than sequelish.

... And that's all I remember, and I neeeeeds to find it, precioussss.

Help plz. ;_;

EDIT: Found!! Warchild by Karin Lowachee. Not really GW-like except for the hero, who is like Heero.

... ♥ heero. *___*

IN OTHER NEWS [livejournal.com profile] sarolynne wrote character intros for her cracky fantasy quest story. They are here, and they are hilarious.

It might be interesting to note that the plot of the story came from that snippet of dialogue:

Picture the hero showing up at the wizard's tower to start his quest!

Wizard: *bored sigh* What is it this time? Girl? Castle? Enchantment? Your name is Inigo Montoya, someone killed your father, etc, etc.
StableBoy: Well, actually, you could say it's about a girl. I've always felt like I should be one, you see.
Wizard: ...I like you kid. You surprise me. Sure, I'll help you.

I'm pushing for Saro to write it for NaNoWriMo. It's just too good an idea to pass up. XDD

Hm. ...sounds a bit like McCaffrey and Moon's Sassinak (http://www.amazon.com/Sassinak-Planet-Pirates-Anne-McCaffrey/dp/1857230922/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-5950687-5269402?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1189302485&sr=8-1), except that the pirates there were genetically-altered humans.

...I can't say that that setting ever struck me as particularly Gundamish, though it was interesting in a brain-candy sort of way.

Ja, -n

That would be an awesome sorty. :O

And I have no idea what book you seek. Though I keep thinking about Garth Nix's Shade's Children though really not.

That sounds like Warchild by Karin Lowachee. I can't say it reminds me of GW except the main character seems to be a carbon copy of Heero.

Definitely sounds like Warchild -- the opening is written in second person as Joss's family's spaceship is captured by pirates. The two sequels/companions are Burndive and Cagebird.

The paperback version of Burndive has one of those terribly misleading back cover blurbs that made me anticipate a very different book from what Lowachee actually wrote -- I disliked the first half because of that, though once I'd shaken off the false assumptions, I did like the book for what it really is: a character novel rather than an action/adventure story.

And Cagebird is about gay space pirates. Yes, really. And it is AMAZING. (I warn you, though, it's also depressing as hell.)

And Cagebird is about gay space pirates.

So true! It's one of those books that's amazing, though trying to explain what it's about makes it sound misleading. (one would expect gay space pirates to be more flaming and less angsty. Not that I mind. :3)
