Naruto -- movie n°2

... I did call it glorified filler, didn't I?

I take it back.

While I definitely don't wish for it to fit in the Naruto continuity... it's a bit like finding a good crossover fic. It's not QUITE the original world, and yet...

It starts with the attack of big armored meanies on a Sand Country guard post on a beach. The armors have a definite European style; in fact, lots of things on the bad guys' side feel European. The guards are getting their asses kicked...

Then Kankuro and Gaara steal the show. ♥

They manage to drive the invaders back toward the water, but then, uh oh. There's a huge armored ship in the bay. Hello, Commodore Perry. XD And then the ship FIRES ZE MISSILES. DDDD: OMG GAARA NO.

The scene shifts to Sakura, Naruto and Shikamaru hunting down a ferret. It's cute, and funny, though I'm still buggered by the fact that Chuunin-Shika is taking D-rank missions with them without even an explanation, as if Kakashi doesn't exist and Shika doesn't have a team of his own.

...the decors are almost too awesome, it looks like they're bouncing through photographs. XD Mmm, pretty.

Kickass fight scene, Sakura gets to move around a bit instead of just standing in her corner while people fight around her... Then Knight-chan bursts out of nowhere.

Knight-chan would only look more out of a Middle Ages legend if he... wait, I'm not sure what he could do to make it worse. Have blue eyes instead of red maybe?

They fight, yay. Knight-chan has green "chakra". Knight-chan is also gay. Gay, gay, gay. (also his songs are kinda dance-y, trance-y, see the genre? Techno.)

ShikaSaku shippers get to squee as Shika grabs her hand to pull her away as the Fight For Seme Rights goes on right by the cliff. Predictably, green "chakra" versus rasengan = splodies. Yeah, still by the cliff. Mmm, smart.

Naruto wakes up under a nomad-type tent. He's in a futon. He's also half-naked. Guess who is lying half-naked in the other futon next to him, looking desperately uke. Knight-chan glares, tries to straighten up, goes "oww--nngh" ~.~! and falls back on the bed.

Then Naruto starts ogling his naked chest. Really. Granted, because there's a weird tatto on it. details, details.

The nomads are kind of neat. Their carts are pulled by rhinoceros and they ride pink ostriches, but it doesn't look half as cracked as it sounds. XD

We get a Knight-chan childhood flashback, so he's probably gonna take a beatdown of justive and then they'll go fight the real evil together. It's predictable, but still cute. XD

Knight-chan, to Naruto: *expressionless* you have an interesting power. Come with me.

Asuka's translation: You kicked my ass and it made me hot. Alas, I only have one facial expression. Still, come with me.

ComplexPhoenix: subtitling the subtext!
Askerian: oh, did I tell you that knight-guy's sword... gets longer.
Askerian: it gets longer.
Askerian: yes.
Askerian: as in, when he feels like he's getting topped, it goes ZING and double-lengths.
Askerian: ...
Askerian: he's so gay.

Askerian: AHAHA LOSER
Askerian: feeling better, knight-chan tries to sneak away, but then zomg child falls from tree, he jumps to save him/her... and hurts himself again. XD
Askerian: the child was very pudgy.
Askerian: but then knight-chan was wearing armor
ComplexPhoenix: and he still got hurt?
Askerian: naruto: *hmph. gives out hand to help him up reluctantly*
Askerian: knight-chan: ... *dude, i looked stupid in front of my crush. BROODING TIME.*

Naruto: *tracks the guy, all RARR YOU LEFT WITHOUT WARNING COWARD*
Knight-chan: *still expressionless and not even looking at Naruto* my name is Temujin, come on, i'll introduce you to my daddy the captain.

Like he assumes that of course Naruto's there to come with him. Ahaha. *pushes the slash goggles setting down a notch*

The architecture of the moving fortress is totally western, with marble pillars and stuff. Also, they have kinda advanced technology, and power their fortress and armors with, apparently, people's life energy.

head bad guy: we came here to create an utopia, we want to create a world without war... *gives very convincing speech* naruto, won't you come with us?
naruto: :D nah, thanks but i have to become hokage.
bitchy knight girl : *on speaker* oi master, the invasion of Wind Country failed, oops!
naruto: ...

I have to admit that I liked the bad guy, for he is honestly good at pretending to be a nice, honorable person -- compared to most naruto villains, that is. By the end he will succumb to the appeal of the MUAHAHAHA, but for the moment, he's playing it nice quite well)

Gaara apparently managed to destroy the ship that attacked his place; Knight-chan goes there to check what happened, Naruto follows, demanding WTF he was thinking and all. Points must be given for Knight-chan not immediately falling on his knee and going ZOMG NARUTO UR SO RIGHT I WAS BLIIIIND. Nope, he's well indoctrinated. Mrr.

Then a couple of shapeshifting Knight bitches arrive and attack. Oh hay, Gaara and Kankuro~ Neat fighting scenes (and wow, someone actually using genjutsu in combat O.o) Then Kankuro gets to be the butt of the jokes for a minute. =__=;; Kankuro should NOT remind me of Sokka from Avatar. Ever, ever.

Anyway, stuff happens, interesting and plotty but i'm too lazy to tell it all again, but hey! I think I like it better than the Snow Princess movie. Even despite all the Atlantis and European vibes, it's actually better constructed and has an actual plot.

Sakura gets to outsmart a bitch, yay. Shika and Kankuro get one of my OTP flags. Good fight scenes, again.

Blahblah more stuff happens. Naruto fights, get pwned, gets up again, fights again, manages to get Knight-chan to see what an evil asshole his idealistic pacifist master is, gets pwned, knight-chan fights and gets pwned, they get up again and fight together and win except SELFDESTRUCT ZOMG. And Knight-chan knocks naruto out to go sacrifice himself and OMGSASUKE NARUTO DREAMS OF SASUKE YES YES YES YES YES. (black background, dry grass, they're walking toward each other in total silence, then they walk past each other. Naruto wakes up and then goes "i never want to lose a friend again" and proceeds to be gay with Knight-chan save Knight-chan's ass.

Knight-chan: *faaaaaalls*
Naruto: *catches!*
ComplexPhoenix: *sporfle*
fade to black, they wake up on a rock -- still holding onto each other. *cue violins*
ComplexPhoenix: *facepalmsporfle*
Askerian: oh god the cheesy
Askerian: see, there was a picture, and it was painted all black as an image of despair
Askerian: then of course they wake up in front of it, and it cracks
Askerian: and it was an image of friendship!!
Askerian: with handholding.
Askerian: and naruto is still holding his wrist
ComplexPhoenix: gwahrku
Askerian: ... to me the painting looks like husband and wife, but hey.

Then stuff winds down, threads are gathered, and it's the end, aw.

I purposefully ignored several plot threads, because zomg that was good, and maybe it's just that I'm sleep deprived but I really liked the movie (yes, that includes Knight-chan the Gay and the Old Codger that I didn't mention but he's still awesome.) And if I tell you everything, you won't want to watch it too. XD

Still,

-the technology looks almost sci-fi. Or at the very least sci-fi fantasy, with huge machines fed on magic.

-The whole "yeah, there was another continent, and they sorta evolved differently (yeah, into a mix of France/England in the XVth century which somehow evolved from almost inca roots), and there was a *blahblah cue myth of Atlantis*" It doesn't really fit in the usual Naruto world, though in the way it was presented, it was easily tolerable. This is why I said it feels like a good crossover; the two worlds don't really mesh when you think about it, but so long as you're in the story, you don't notice because the clash is fun. Still, I shudder to think of the possibility for speshul Sues.

-The source of the enemy's magic stones, the source of the green "chakra" is a mass of half-liquid stuff that badly makes me think of mako. Yeah, the FF7 Lifestream. I mean, when you crystallise mako, you get magic materia; this is the same principle. =__=; Bzzt, not original enough, people.

Maybe when i sleep on it, I'll find more problems with it, but right now... yeah, I got into it. And I had fun. Loads of fun. ♥ If anyone has screencaps, plz gimmegimme ;_; I can't make any, and god, but some of these moments were so iconable.

... And it's eight AM. oops. :p

...I just have to randomly say I love you. Thank you. And. Uh. Goodnight. *__*

Aww, now that I've read your description of events, I may have to catch this movie. It seems a lot more interesting than the fillers.

The only link that I've seen on my flist for screencaps would be here (http://community.livejournal.com/chuunin/2025624.html#cutid1), and by extension, here (http://kat-thefox.livejournal.com/1056.html). The second one contains a few Sasuke clips, but is lacking a few of the other scenes you described.

[identity profile] mikkeneko.livejournal.com 2006-04-30 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
So this was basically a crossover with... the FMA movie? XD

[identity profile] maldoror-gw.livejournal.com 2006-04-30 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't expecting much, so my first minute reaction went something like this.

"Oh, fight on the beach. Hmm, ninja, good action - Kankuro?! GAARA, BABY!!"

Then it went a bit downhill with Baka!Naruto and Slaphappy!Sakura (nghhhh) but still it maintained lots of points just for the first five minutes and the mid-film fight. Plotiness happened, lotsa fun stuff, I didn't see the time go by, so pretty good all in all.

Gotta say though, I was disappointed in one thing. Yes, I know, it's a shonen/kid's film, so it has to be black and white. The guys who are accidentally on the wrong side through childhood wangst (Gaara, Knight-chan, to this side of the line) are redeemed and show their truly glowing qualities (and bishiness, accidentally). The guys who are just plain evil (monocled and mutated freak guy, this side of the line plz) are shown as truly ugly and go down with a Muahahaha.

I just sort of wish they'd taken the more courageous and challenging option of not going the muhahahah way. An utopia built on the top of burning villages and graves is inherently wrong, and does not need a 'muhahahah, this was all a gambit for taking over the world, you are fools and your stones is mine' sort of thing. Most Utopias are inherently flawed, but those people attracted to extremes still fall for it. It's more difficult to see the black and the white in that case, and the decision to go with it or fight it is more philosophical, more difficult. More mature and more significant too.

...and next I'll be expecting an illustration of the pros and cons of Marxism in a Walt Disney blockbuster. I'll settle for entertained. And GAARA! BABY! *squeals and then tries to pretend it didn't happen*

[identity profile] maldoror-gw.livejournal.com 2006-04-30 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I noticed a distinct lack of Temari action too :(

Yeah, I liked it better than the first movie, hands down, even though it had a few plot holes and oddness in it.

Oh, there's a few Gaara-centric fics out there. Where he blushes and mumbles and falls in love with Naruto/Lee/Sakura etc. There is a distinct lack of him killing people, however. Pity.

[identity profile] complexphoenix.livejournal.com 2006-04-30 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
If Gaara blushed, most likely the Sand Armor would hide it.

[identity profile] maldoror-gw.livejournal.com 2006-04-30 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Et au fait, regarde de nouveau le geste que fait Gaara quand il fait le Suna Raishin, et dis-moi que cela ne t'as pas fait follement rigoler sur le coup...

Whahahah! (J'chais pas animer non plus, malheureusement...)

ShikaSaku shippers get to squee as Shika grabs her hand to pull her away as the Fight For Seme Rights goes on right by the cliff.

I think I enjoyed your summary of it more than the actual movie! XD

[identity profile] rayemars.livejournal.com 2006-04-30 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, the movie actually makes references to the countinent past Lightning or the area beyond Wind?

. . . wow, I might have to watch it. Because that's just cool.

*sigh* I should probably be glad that Sasuke was at least acknowleged, but it's getting kind of tiring to only have him referenced when Naruto is all "Must save the whole damn world!" He's going to develop a complex soon.

Man...

[identity profile] chrismakkuh.livejournal.com 2006-05-01 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the movie was hella hella great.

I must ask though... was anyone else baffled by the fact that Suna Shinobi were fighting so close to water? If the were in wind country... where the hell did the water come from?!? I didn't think Wind Country had water any where near there?!

Gaara was so smexy in this movie. The Sand God Jutsu... by far the funniest, with the arm thing and what not. And I'm glad other's appreciated it. I had to rewind just to make sure I saw that right. I giggled...

And I might be the only one, but I definitly get chills when Gaara calls out his Jutsu. I think the echo effect adds a little more menace to the power. Just chilling and sexy all at the same time.

Can I please have him for my birthday?!?

[identity profile] myrafur.livejournal.com 2006-05-01 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, the beautiful pain in my sides! (I laughed entirely too hard at this.)

You so totally pwn recaps. *nods* This made my day. So much. Oh, hell... my whole weekend!

It might just be me, but I fall apart when Kankuro says "Gaara..." *melts thinking about it*

OH AND OMG!

Kankuro: Wow, we fight well together! *wants to see what else they do well, together*
Shika: Che, I planned it all out that way...
Kankuro: Umm, ...so, we can't really move around since there're all these explosive tags everywhere... Wanna snog?
Shika: Meh, most of them are just plain paper...
Kankuro: ...

[identity profile] silchi.livejournal.com 2006-05-01 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Wait.

The second Naruto movie is out? D:

I must be really out of the loop.

[identity profile] muffytaj.livejournal.com 2006-05-01 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
I kept waiting for the lightning attacks to turn Gaara's sand to glass. I thought it would have been the eprfect way for him to get defeated :(

Knight-chan was so in love with Naruto. Because Naruto always needs someone to be slashy with - even in the movies!

(also, naruto keeps getting his face stuck in people's crotches. Intentional: Y/N?)

[identity profile] muffytaj.livejournal.com 2006-05-01 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea, I just sat there going: "Gaara! Gaaraaaa, awesome! Wtf, but pretty!" Maybe they grounded her or something, so that she couldn't generate any? No idea. It was pretty. But yeah, lightning + sand = instant glass, but then I am excepting earth logic from Naruto movies, silly me.

I am surprised Sakura didn't hit him. Or Kankurou. They must not mind too much, then :p Or be used to it.
