Japanese fandom is HUGE, but I think not as networked and communicative as English fandom. In English fandom you have huge fanfic databases like Mediaminer, FFnet, etc., and also LJ communities, LJ in particular allows for a lot of interaction...
Most of Japanese activities, from what I've seen, have a lot to with stalking, events (online or otherwise), and use a lot of webrings and personal message boards.
Besides, there are just more English speakers in the world... but really, I don't know /that/ much about the inner workings of Japanese fandom.
