More of the ficcie

That thing is writing itself surprisingly fast. O_o I hope I will not get bored with it in the middle of the story and leave it to rot an undefined length of time like I did with so many other fics >__<

Damn, but Fei and Heero are cold bastards.

Part One

When the phone call came, they were eating.

It was one of those rare weekends where the boys weren't at school and Relena didn't have any meeting going on and so, was able to go home for more than just sleeping, and when it happened, they ate together, for the sake of maintaining what little family ties they had.
She was seated at the end of the table, Heero on her right and Wufei on her left, and they were making polite conversation. Her inquiries on their school life was just for the sake of small talk with her "sons", though. She dutifully kept in contact with their teachers and she was sure that if there had been a problem, she would have been told at once, but they always got talked about as hard-working, aloof boys, and that pleased her greatly. She thought of raising their allowance; it was kind of low for teenagers, even if they didn't have much occasions of spending it at their boarding school, just to show that she was pleased with them. She had been right to chose them, those four years ago.
Wufei was now sixteen and Heero fifteen and a half, and they were developing into fine specimens of well-bred lads; even if they had been street rats in their childhood, no one could believe it just by seeing them as they were now. Maybe she would take them to a reception later in the year; she was sure that they wouldn't shame her.
They had barely shown any signs that they even went through puberty's mood shifts, the only sign of rebellion that she could find was their hair. Heero's was still as tangled as before, and he refused to get a crew cut, and Wufei's was now reaching his shoulder blades. But since Heero looked good with tousled hair and made the effort of trying to style it when he saw her, and Wufei's hair, being of that sleek, smooth black Asian people often have, looked good being long, she didn't make a fuss about that. She didn't want to stifle their identity after all.
They now looked even less like each other than they had when they had been children. They were both Asian-types, but the similarities ended here. But she figured that they weren't brothers but half brothers; made sense, since their ages were too close to be born of the same mother. It didn't matter anyway.

Pargan coughed politely, and Relena stopped eating and elegantly lifted an eyebrow at him. Her old butler knew better than interrupt them when they ate.
"I beg you pardon, Madam, but you have an important call on line two."
"I asked not to be bothered now, Pargan," she announced in a calm but slightly berating tone.
"I know, madam, but it's a police officer."

As Relena left, Heero and Wufei exchanged a worried look over the table, careful to cover it. Surely it didn't concern them... Surely they had been too cautious to get caught... Police sounded like a serious matter, really, too serious to be about them.
Wufei glanced at the door to make sure that Pargan had left with Mrs. Darlian and leaned over the table.
"Do you think..."
"How could it? We've always been cautious... Must be something else."
"Unless one of them talked," Wufei growled.
Heero shook his head and put his hand on the other boy's knee, squeezing lightly.
"Very improbable," he assured.
They sat back in silence, waiting for their step-mother to come back, each minute feeling like a condemnation.

"Boys? I have some news," Relena announced when she came back. She seemed distraught, and decidedly unhappy, but her look was turned inwards. It didn't feel like they were concerned by the subject of her upset.
"Mother?" Heero asked, getting up to give her his hand.
It was something Wufei rarely did apart from in public, calling her Mother. They often called her Ma'am when they were in private. In public it was different, it was only for show. But the black-haired boy could see that Relena didn't feel well, and for once, maybe a inkling of emotional support would help her to pull herself together. He scoffed mentally at her weakness, but he had to admit, it was the first time he saw her in a less than perfectly controlled state, and it felt strange.
"Thank you, Heero," she said with a poor little smile.
It failed to be perfect, it failed to hide what she felt, and it was the most sincere smile they had ever seen her give.
She sat down, not quite gratefully for once, and briefly closed her eyes.
"My brother is dead," she announced suddenly, linking her hands together.
They both had the same reaction ; an eyebrow going up. They hadn't even been aware that she had a brother.
"Your brother, ma'am?" Wufei asked, waiting for the rest of the explanation.
"He ... left the house and the family when I was... your age, I think. He was five years older. Father wanted to disown him, but Milliardo disowned him first. He changed his name and disappeared. I heard that he had gotten married two years after that, but after that, I never heard anything else. He never kept in contact. I don't think he ever knew when Father died..."
She sighed.
"It's been ages since I thought of him, but still, it's quite a shock..." she admitted in a low voice.
Heero and Wufei exchanged a look again. Were they required to procure emotional comfort? It had not been part of the original accord...
"How did he die?" Heero asked. He was purely seeking information, but he still softened his voice; it didn't cost much to sound like he cared, at least a little.
"Car accident. He was with his wife, a lady... Lucrezia, I think. They both died. He... I didn't even know her name, and now she's dead," the politician sighed.
Wufei's tongue itched to ask why Milliardo had been disowned, but he knew that it wouldn't go well. He had to leave the questioning to Heero anyway. Heero had always been her favorite, he could get more out of her. If Wufei asked, it would feel unnatural anyway and she would regain her composure, and they would not learn anything.
"He has a son. He's your age, maybe a little younger, I don't know."
Wufei and Heero exchanged a horrified look. They didn't like where this was going.
"I think, as his closest living relative, I will have to take him in," Relena decided.
The two teenagers bit back identical groans. They had seen it coming.
"Doesn't this Lucrezia have a family? They were probably closer to the boy than you were..." Heero said, trying to salvage the situation.
"Maybe. I'll have to see."
She excused herself and left for her study, no doubt already planning to get the more input possible on the situation.
"Well, shit."

I wrote more, but I don't like it. I'll have to rewrite some thinks before I decide that it's good enough.

Oh, and Seraphim procured me with a title!! "Family secrets" It's simple, but it will do. ^__^
