AU, 1x5 turning into 1x2x5. Not been betaread at all, so no hit me. Barely even read it a second time before posting ^^;
The officials at the orphanage were beside themselves with excitement and panic when the world came that Relena Darlian, the youngest Vice Minister ever, would be going to their house. And not on official capacity, no.
She wanted to adopt.
At noon, they received the news. At four PM, when she came, all the children had been washed, clothed in their finest and lectured for about an hour about their chance. Most of them had yawned and let what had been said enter their brain by and ear and come out again by the other ear.
But two boys took what had been said very, very seriously, and began to devise their plan.
Miss Darlian was, at thirty-two, still as outstanding as when she had come into the political world, ten years ago, still a very good leader. But it hadn't come without some... sacrifices from her part. She was still unmarried, still childless.
By choice, it was true, for how could you devote yourself so totally to the peace in the world and still have the place in your heard and mind for a family, she would never know. But most of her enemies played on that to give them an advantage, and the women, one of his biggest supports, were having more and more troubles relating to her.
So she had decided to adopt. She didn't have a husband, but it would play in her favor. A lone woman, raising a child alone, and a child who wasn't even hers... It would go well.
Of course, being a nice person under the politician, Relena was also satisfied that she could give a homeless child something of a chance for a better future, but she had been into politics for so long that turning everything into good PR was now second nature.
The officials tried first to rope her into visiting the newborns' wing, but she refused politely. Se didn't have the time to take care of a newborn.
Come to think of it, she didn't have the time to take care of a toddler either, and if the fact that she had adopted a son to give him to be raised by nannies got out, she would get shunned so fast her head would spin.
"I'd like to see some of your older children, please. Something between eight and twelve, I'd say." It was the perfect age. Not a teenager, so no problems with mood shifts yet, but not too young either, so they could understand the deal and not feel cheated when Relena didn't become the mommy of their dreams... even she had scruples making a little boy think he had found his dream mommy when she knew she could never be.
She found her perfect child in the playground. Seated on a swing, he was calmly pushing it, his young face so serious and collected that it was impossible to know what he was thinking of, as he watched the other children play. He didn't seem to want to join them in their loud games, and for that Relena was glad. She showed him to the woman who was accompanying her, inquiring politely.
"Oh, him? He calls himself Heero. He was found on the streets when he was approximately eight."
"Is he well-behaved?"
"Very. He's calm, and silent... Maybe a little to much for a child his age. But he's also very intelligent," hastily added the young woman, afraid that she had ruined the boy's chances. "He's just not lucky he arrived here so late... Most people want young children, toddlers, babies..."
"It doesn't bother me," she said.
It was true; it was at her advantage after all.
The orphanage woman beamed at her. Miss Darlian was a dream come true, if what she said was real. After 10, they usually had to have a talk with children, explaining to them that they would probably never get a family at all.
"I want to talk with him, if that's ok," decided Relena after a moment observing him.
His eyes met hers, across the playground. He stopped the swing, and continued staring. Serious, no expression on his face. So intense for someone so young. Relena felt compelled to approach.
He was very cute, she saw when she came closer, and not that preteen beauty that disappears as soon as a boy hits puberty, but one that was here to stay. It was good to have beautiful children, she thought. People liked beauty. He had a wild mop of hair that looked like it had never seen a brush, but that could be arranged with help from a hairdresser; she knew some very good ones. His features looked... somewhat exotic, she realized. He had high cheekbones, and his eyes were slanted. But blue; definitely mixed ancestry here. That was good PR also, to have a child of a different ethnicity. Proved that she didn't care about ethnic barriers; that was true in real life too, but having a proof that paparazzi could take a picture of was good.
She arrived in front of the boy. He looked young, maybe nine or so, and so thin...
"Hello," she said.
He nodded politely. He didn't talk. She felt disturbed for a second.
"How old are you?"
"Eleven and a half," he said, expressionless. His eyes burned with a calculating light.
"You look younger," she said after a while. She tried to decide if she had to adopt a special behavior, but he seemed too intelligent for baby-talk, and he was old enough not to need it.
"Do you know why I'm here?"
"You're searching for a child to adopt."
"That's right," she nodded. She felt nervous, for the first time in years. She didn't know how to broach the subject. "The lady there told me that you are a calm little boy, and smart..."
"I have an IQ of 148," he informed her calmly. She blinked.
"I'll be frank," she said after a while. "I don't have much time to take care of a child, and I will not be a very good mom if I do adopt you. But you will be entirely taken care of, sent to the best schools, you will get a very good education, and be able to enter the world of the rich and famous. All I ask is that you don't create problems for me."
"It wouldn't look good if your child was burning cars or sent to a reform school."
She nodded. He was a sharp one. It was very good.
"I'd like to accept, but I can't," he said after five minutes of thinking.
She started. She had not been expecting that. That was her dream child, and he was saying no?! She'd never find one as perfect as him anywhere!
"If I go with you, I'll be separated from my brother. I can't allow that. He's the only person I have."
She nodded, slowly. She understood, at least on an intellectual level.
"Where is your brother?" she asked.
He showed her a corner between the playground's wall and some artificial "mountains" for children to scale. A black-haired boy was sitting there, reading a book.
"That's your brother?"
"Yes."
"He likes to read?"
"A lot. He read all the time."
That was a peaceful occupation. And it showed that he would be easier to teach.
She called the lady who had accompanied her and showed her the boy.
"Who is that?" she asked. The lady gave her a strange glance, as if berating her for asking in earshot of the blue-eyed boy, but answered anyway.
"That's Wufei. He's a real bookworm," she added warmly.
"Is he... boisterous when he doesn't read?" she asked with an amused smile.
"Oh, not at all!" laughed the lady. "He's nearly as calm as Heero here. He can be stubborn though, but if you explain to him why you're taking a decision, and you have a good reason, he will go along with you. He's curious, though, but you just have to give him books to read that answer his questions, and he'll be happy."
"How old is he?"
"Twelve."
She turned back to Heero, deep in thoughts. The boy was looking at her. She wondered how one so young had already mastered the unexpressive face she had taken years to perform right.
She leaned over, close to Heero, and asked softly if he would abide by their terms too. Heero nodded, imperceptibly.
She took a moment to think, then nodded, slowly.
"I'd like to adopt Heero and Wufei, please."
"Both of them?!" exclaimed the lady. "But..."
"As you said, they're very calm children, and shouldn't cause me too much trouble. And they seem very nice..."
In the end, the officials weren't really convinced, but she turned on the charm and they let her take the two of them in. They were getting way too old to be adopted. If that chance was refused to them, they would probably never get another. And she figured that like that, they would always have a playmate. It was good. Funding two educations didn't cost that much more than one; they would live in the same place and be babysat by the same people, and she was rich enough. All in one, she figured, she had gotten a good deal.
So Heero and Wufei went to live in First Minister Relena Darlian's house.
Not home.
Never a home.
Still better than the streets, though. They didn't complain.
And NO Heero and Fei aren't really brothers. They were together for a long time on the streets and after at the orphanage, and so, they decided to pass as bothers not to be separated. I don't do incest. (except twincest but it's another matter :P )
