Maybe make it "are weak" or "hits weakly"? "His hits weak" might work better if you want to keep the grammar that way, because you do hear that format occasionally in poetry or prose. It's easier to recognize with "his" instead of "John's." But, it's pretty rare and stylised, I think.)
