Karkat and soap operas as 'research' that he gets wrapped up in! I'm not sure if I'm tickled at how useful it might prove to be as a research tool (soap operas have ALL THE TROPES, it's like a crash course in the entire subject of human drama) or slightly horrified at how it might be construed (they are not good AT ALL as a reflection of actual human life and interaction!), but that Karkat loves watching them and is baffled at the same time -- and that Byrd likes watching Karkat watch them and winding him up about it -- strikes me as perfect characterisation.
Dave's agonies over What Quadrants Actually Mean -- because Byrd's not the only teenager here, and not the only one who's attempting some hybrid alien-human romantic system with no precedent and a bunch of shyness. (Actually, I think Dave has more of the awkwardness and the shyness! Byrd's at least not quite so deeply in love, nor quite so certainly-set in his affections. Poor Dave.)
Byrd playing Rose! Best cosplay, definitely. :D I suggest Dave gets him a Rose hat and scarf for Christmas... Then it can be Byrd's turn to give Dave a pillow to the face.
Stealth attack of body horror/dysmorphia when least expected! The missing-wings thing, and the brief foreshadowing when he thought about not having a ruff to preen, was excellently done and felt so real. ♥ In a similar vein, I loved Karkat's little uncertainties about alien anatomy reflected in his comments about horns and healing factors, and his tentative treatment of Byrd's nonexistent fangs... Plus the social issues of what sleeping together means, how to innuendo ('bucketless' pfft!) and even simple sleep posture! Please never stop writing aliens and humans trying to coexist?
I love that they both found themselves able to laugh together when things went awry, too -- they may have the healthiest troll-human relationship going! :D Certainly the most adorable. (Though I imagine Dave and Terezi will be stiff competition for that once they get through the current weirdness; how I love them!)
P.S. "Yogurt hose" and deadpan eyebrow waggles! *is dead of giggles* What is it about Striders and having the worstbest worst metaphors?
