Gamzee's reasoning is that caring too much is a huge part of Karkat's burden and thus something to mad pity him over. But he also would have a SERIOUS problem if Karkat ever started wanting any of them to pity him back. Now *that* he would get jealous over. But I think at some point there'll be a John thing where they do things that might be construed as pale! Karkat is a bit uncomfortable re: how Nepeta used to (maybe still!!!) crush on him. It makes him a bit guilty, and then it makes him sad on her behalf and then he goes all pale on her which uhh kinda insult to injury there.

Thing is, at the moment even Tavros isn't convinced about Gamzee, because Gamzee is mostly pretty chill about things and sometimes REALLY SCARY and he's generally hard to pity -- okay he's an ex druggie but he doesn't even care about that! everything slides off him, he's always sure of his place in the world and never seems to doubt himself or be afraid. But at the same time when someone likes you for a long time, eventually, unless you're really against it, you might kinda start entertaining the idea. It's going to be tentative for a while.
