High school fics are usually all about making the awesome fantasy-style characters into people you could bump into in your own high school, and their epic dramas into stuff you might, perhaps, read in the newspaper if epic shit *really* happens, and otherwise hear about it as gossip. To me it's really... I don't know, pointless isn't the right word, but... it takes all the magic and scope of their personalities and struggles out of it. So i'm fine with short scenes of character interaction, because that doesn't change much, but a long high school plot is ew.

Also it's usually written by people who ARE in high school, and while some of them already write and plot well, that really isn't the majority. :/
