I don't think it was too woobie. His battle with his pride shows that his is still a potential prick, but his past history is enough to fuck over even the most gentle-hearted soul that I can't totally blame him. He had to fight to be his own person every second of his life and that is bound to leave it's mark. And you showed that a bit, with his reaction to having to cut his hair.
