INO IS BADASS. STOP. TENTEN DID SOMETHING. STOP.
1. "unable to kill his emotions, Chouji faces an assault by his former teacher!"
Asuma is about to killinate Chouji. Shikamaru spends his closeup paneltime going GASP HE ESCAPED MY HOLD. Ino spends her looking pissed off and gritting her teeth.
INO TACKLE! Man, I don't know how she managed to move CHOUJI by twice her own body length. Ino is badass, is all I can say. I love it when she (read: ANY GIRL, but Ino is my fave with Sakura, so. XD) doesn't just stand in the background and do a commentary, or attempt long distance jutsu that fail half the time.
2. Meanwhile one of Kakuzu's mask-monsters is destroyed in one great rush of wind.
Tenten: *making OHOHO MY PRECIOUS face at the big war fan responsible for that* "this thing looks pretty sweet... wonder who dropped it."
Pff, Tenten. She still can't have ACTION scenes, but looks like she gets to assuage her fan envy. Soon you'll be able to face Temari again. XD
Chouza: *is big at people*
Izumo&Kotetsu: *are chainy at people*

Oh god I love the seamless way they fight together and cover each other's backs.
meanwhile in Chouji's head, Ino is making the "okay you whiny bitch, I love you but srsly grow a pair" speech. ... WHILE SHE KEEPS MAKING CHOUJI'S BODY FIGHT ASUMA! ino yousocool.
8. Ino: don't you remember that Meaningful Flashback about the earrings ceremony?!
9. More info! Apparently the Nara, Akimichi and Yamanaka clans have a tradition of hoop earrings for their kids, which they switch for stud earrings. That's a weird tradition, but hey why not. XD

ino: DX YAAA. *screams like a girl, yet still manages to have more balls than Chouji*
I can see how she's being used as a prop for the boy, IE Chouji -- a sort of "this GIRL is awesome AND protecting you, aren't you ashamed that you're being PROTECTED by a GIRL" thing, but at the same time it's not in-your-face (no one actually SAYS anything about it or looks at Ino weird, Shikamaru actually seems to take it as a teammates naturally protect teammates thing) so I can still go YAY INO even though it's not showcased -- the chapter is about Chouji finding his courage and growing up.
Obviously Ino is already awesome and needs no growing up. u.u (kinda sucks she did it offscreen, but aw anyway.)
10. Also it helps that it's not only girls who protect CHouji, it's also his dad RANDOMLY FALLING FROM THE SKY TO MAKE A WALL OF HIS BODY.

11. flashback: blahblah the children are the kings we have to protect, shika you're a big boy and Kurenai will need a free babysitter so tadahh, from now on i'm gonna call you an adult.

12. On this page we learn what the three clan symbols look like, and that Chouji is the 16th generation of Akimichi. Presumably they all timed their births so all the kids are 16th gen. Seriously? Did they know each other way before Konoha existed then? Because apparently they've also known the Sarutobi clan for long enough that they're involved in their tradition as a sort of Master of Ceremony thinger, where they provide the "adulthood" earrings. Hm. I really wonder how that works. Either Asuma and Konohamaru have more cousins somewhere, or only one line of descent in the ino-shika-cho families goes through it, because I know THEY do have cousins. Hm, intriguing.
13. blahblah chouji and chouza adorableness. Blahblah earrings you're wearing mine, son, so that the cumulative force of 15 generations of oaths lands right on you, but no pressure.

15. Huh, I like his revelation, that he kinda just always assumed he would naturally grow in size with age and his mind would also grow into strength/adulthood in parallel, but it didn't happen because you can't just wait for it to come to you.

16. Okay, sorry Chouji the butterfly wings will always crack me up. But apart from that I like how his coming of age story was done. He took longer than Shikamaru to get there, but his path was also pretty different.

Anyway, I *gasp* enjoyed this chapter. Team 10's teamwork is always flawlessly awesome, and n'aww Chouji.

Hm, Sakura'd be with.. Kakashi? Yea, the Swordsmen fight might be returned to soon. Though finishing up with Asuma first, of course.

PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING THERE. Kishi seems to fail every other time with everything else when it comes to balanced team work. Shikamaru is one of those weird characters like Gaara, and for some reason their teams come off more evenly balanced then Team 7 or Team Gai.

Or at least, if you become a ascended extra, you get a half decent character development and interactions, but not if you're a background character, or a main character. IF YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE, JUST GIVE THE FUCK UP, YOU STOP MAKING SENSE.

Earring inheritance

The impression I got is that the hoops belong to oldie!InoShikaChou, and that the rookie team 10 will pass thier earrings down to their kids, who will then be given some by their sensei when they make chuunin (maybe dangly ones, next time round? Pfft), and so on down the generations.
Also, I'm now lusting after a Tenten-Temari epic battle of the fans.

The chapter felt a bit fillerish to me, but only in that it was developing a side character not furthering the main plot, so I still enjoyed it a lot.
I agree with you about liking how the fact that Ino happens to be a girl isn't mentioned in this chapter. It makes it more "his team mate is protecting him and they all work together" and less "and even the girl is better than you..."
Chouji's Dad dropping in from the sky was hilarious though.
I also like how Chouji makes butterfly wings badass (sorta).
