i know how to edit and how to time things o_O
may i sugest learning how to use adobe after effects of adobe premier. I'm sure you can find cracked versions of them some where. those are the editing programs that i use the most.
premier can be stupid about rendering out, so i sugest after effects, it's vert user friendly

Oh! I have a million and a half links for this. Um, just let me find them.

Well, I downloaded Vegas Video 3. something or other....of course, I had to crock it (shhhhhh!) before I could use it....it works well enough. I pretty much taught myself, but I'd already had some video editing experience from an honors Vis-com class back in highschool....best advice? Play around. Find something you like. Experiment.

I still have these links from when a friend of mine tried vidding. XP here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/permetaform/166861.html) and here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/permetaform/150126.html). You might find something here (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=vidding) or at [livejournal.com profile] amv, also.

Huhu at least something I know about. I'm not used to make AMVs, but do I edit short movies, so...
My program of choice is Final Cut, but it's Macintosh-only. I'd work with Adobe Premiere if I was on Windows - there are simpler editing programs, but they're generally not precise enough for AMVs, since AMVs ask for a frame-level ajustment. Premiere is relatively easy to find for dowloading (search for it on p2p networks like emule/edonkey) and easy as hell to crack like all Adobe products (just a serial number).
Also find your source material. That is, anime in raw, or better acquired from a dvd (my program of choice for ripping DVDs : VirtualDubMod ; I generally acquire in DV format because that's what Final Cut prefers to work with, and it's high quality, but it consumes a lot of disk space, 13 Gb/hour of rushes). The most time-onsuming part is nearly always to find the images you want to use in your AMV.
Once you have everything, find a basic editing tutorial (basic like : how to import files / how to choose the bit I want in my timeline / how to move my bit of film in the timeline). Don't try to do complicated things in the beginning. Simply assemble one bit after another, trying to follow the music, and don't play with transitions too much (the only transitions I recommend to use are fades : crossfade, fade to solid color ; and most of the time a straight cut is just enough).
Editing anything is a lot of trial and error : edit a few seconds, watch, change by a few frames, re-watch, delete because it doesn't work and choose other rushes instead, watch again and then go back to your first choice because it looks even worse... it can be very frustrating.
Just one thing : don't try lipsync, it's even longer.

I've only done one AMV before, a Fullmetal Alchemist one... cause I was bored off my ass, and I had some of the first fansubs on my comp. >>; I used Windows Movie Maker, which I think comes standard on most new PC's. It's relatively easy to use (though I have a bad habit of teaching myself programs), but there's a few drawbacks, such as it tags the bottem corner with a semi-transparent DivX icon, and it doesn't have an option to let you mess with the sound clips very much.

Can't wait to see what you come up with! <3

If you learn to make AMVs make me one with the Sand sibs to Jack off Jill's "Make you Believe." Because, um, sup Gaara angst?

Oh, this is a problem. I have made about 5 AMVs with WMM, and it is good enough, but for the SFX goodness, you gotta get something better. But for beginners, WMM is just fine.

What song is it that you want to use to make the AMV?
