RUN WHILE YOU STILL CAN. this fandom EATS people. D:
It's a webcomic that started out parodying old text based adventures so (especially at first) there's a lot of fake commands like "character: do something stupid", and the usual graphics are really basic as done in MS Paint, but it being on the internet means the author could and does play a lot with the format. Sometimes there's animated flashes or minigames and music and guest artists, and sometimes suddenly there'll be a beautiful illustration. Anyway some people hate the usual art, some find it hilarious, but for me the real draw is the characters.
Most of the story itself happens in chat logs, seeing as the four main human characters first meet on the internet, we get to read their discussions. Anyway they want to play a game together, yay! only it turns out that the game starts the apocalypse. If they win the game they get to be gods of the new planet the game will create! they did not know that. the earth is still destroyed by meteors though oops. It turns out they were *created* in the game and were always destined to play it, there's lots of time travel and confusing mindfucks about that...
... and then they start interacting with internet trolls... who turn out to be aliens whose species really is called trolls, and who were the players of the previous session, and then the story really takes off.
The plot is full of mindfucks and really silly gags and epic moments of awesome and surprise!reveals THAT WERE APPARENTLY HINTED AT ALL ALONG HOW DID YOU *DO* THAT, and don't get too attached to any characters, they might die whoops. (and then they might get to be ghosts and the ghosts might... get killed again! :D)
Anyway the first arc is long and a bit tedious and the jokes might not hit your funny bone, those things happen, but if you get to the trolls and you still don't like it, it's not for you.
(davesprite is an alternate universe dave who went back in time to help the party and fix some pretty bad stuff and, since alternate selves are doomed and would die in short order anyway, went and fused with a game contruct, a sprite which is supposed to help its player. Dave's sprite was fused with a crow beforehand so Davesprite had wings, but one of them got chopped off at some point.)
I don't know where the rep of the fandom is coming from, maybe behavior in conventions, I've been hanging out on the kink meme and AO3 and everyone's been pretty nice. A little more whiny people asking to know when the next part of my fic was coming but I think they're just spoiled because Hussie updates the canon super fast.
Mind, be prepared to sink the next week into catching up, it's about six thousand pages long by now,and a lot of these are single frames but another lot of them have chatlogs to read if you want to get wtf is going on.
Also prepare to stay confused a while, usually the answers are long in coming and when they come they just bring more questions. But the characters oh lord I love all the characters. All of them. ALL OF THEM. also the women are pretty much all fucking badass. also official canon gay and bisexual characters! (one of the most badass humans who you meet way later is also gay! yusssss.) also the trolls have a really fun form of polyamory as their accepted standard of romantic relationship, which makes shipping a hundred times more complicated and so much more fun. Hateromance is a thing! *glees*
Let me tell you about Homestuck...
